BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Breakside Brewery
Oregon, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Breakside’s most popular offering is this beautifully clear India Pale Ale featuring the unique character of Citra and Chinook hops. This light copper beer has huge citrus and tropical fruit aromas with hints of perfume and pine. Flavors like apricot, guava, and orange hit the tongue accompanied by a mild evergreen note. There’s just enough caramel sweetness to balance the hop flavors, but this is really a showcase for the beautiful varieties of hops grown here in the Northwest. Like all Breakside beers, this has a notably dry finish and, in true IPA form, a restrained but persistent bitterness. It’s one of the most drinkable IPAs around!

Possibly the most well balanced IPA I have ever had when it's fresh. If you can get it on tap at the brew house in Portland it just may be the best execution of an IPA you will ever have!

The gold medal winner within staggering distance of my house? Truly a blessing and a curse. This is the real deal. I have yet to try I beer from Breakside that I don't like, but this is definitely their best.

This is a top notch IPA. Pours a deep orange/copper with a generous white head. The hop notes waft onto your palate with a good blend of pine and tropical fruit.

The big oily hops take the stage here whilst a sweet backend provides balance. Overripe mango and nectarine notes come through also. A smooth and almost creamy mouthfeel helps the 6.8% go down a treat.

My friends had this on tap at their wedding (just outside of Portland) and it was quite the favorite with all the guests. An outstanding beer that would be a hit in any state.

9/5/15 DE

Pours burnt orange with a good foam white head. Disaptes kind of quick but still a decent look.

The smell is awesome. Tons of citrus and tropical fruit. The nose on this is a tropical bomb. Maybe the most I've ever smelled.

The taste is a light citrus and passion fruit concoction that is smooth as tasty. Lightly sweet with the back end hitting you with the topical passion fruit.

Overall, this beer is world class for sure. The only hit would be its almost more juicy feeling than beer but I'd have to say that is even nit picking.

A near perfect IPA. Better on draft than from the bottle, but in my opinion this is the best IPA currently being brewed in Portland. And that, obviously, is saying something. Awesome beer.

I've had this by the bottle, but finally got to the taproom to have it from the source. Fantastic! Easily one of the best IPA offerings in the PNW. Pour was a beautiful liquid gold with a finger of lasting head. Aroma was floral and enticing. Taste was sweet up front followed by the hop presence and finished smooth. Delicious! So easy to drink. Will be back for more as soon as I can.

This one pours a golden copper that's a bit hazy.

Smells like "juicing an orange into your nose." Jesus. Backed by a slight green grass and dinner roll.

This is a huge blast of juicy hops. Not as fruity as the nose, Wow. I'm having trouble describing the spectrum of species here, but it's quite full and balanced across the spectrum. Nice, dry and fruity without leaning too far in either direction. Nice.

Feels full and clean, with a soft silky rasp of carbonation.

This one's a gem. A great hop experience.

On tap at The Tap and Mallet in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a clear dark orange, with a small head, and lots of sticky lacing.

Damn this smells nice! Lots of clean and potent pine needles, grapefruit zest, lemon rind, and crackery malt.

This is one of the best flagship IPAs that I've had. It's wonderfully dry and bitter, with a dry crackery malt backbone. Upon rid backbone is laid the perfect amount of piney and grassy bitterness, grapefruit and lemon rind, and a hint of the green stuff. It's all layered together super nice- absolutely wonderfully constructed.

This has a very crisp mouthfeel- and its incredibly drinkable.

Where has this brewery been my whole life? Exemplary West Coast style banger here.

Pours a nice copper/orange colour.
Heavy citrus with a slight malt backup
Very grapefruity , maybe an orange undertone, slight lime
Same as the smell....delicious
Just a good very drinkable brew with a great aftertaste
I really like this brew, II'll be buying more for sure....it reminds me of Hop Henge or Union Jack....not to heavy , not to lite, just right.

Copper/straw appearance. Slight haze. Beautiful. Minimal head, served to me in a shaker pint.
Can taste the citra, chinook adds a nice spice and earth to the end of the experience. My last beer in pdx. Absolutely loved this one.

Golden color IPA with thick head and good lacing. Wonderful floral aroma. Taste that stands up with the best American IPAs on the planet. Body is medium-full and carbonation is adequate.

Had from a 22oz bomber purchased cold at Beermongers in SE Portland.

Pours a hazy orange-copper color with an inviting creamy white head. Great retention and lacing.

Super bright, floral and citrusy aromas right off the bat, compounding and compounding. Loads of fresh-cut lemon, candied mango, candied pineapple, dried papaya, orange peel, chive, red grapefruit, and whole lawns of fresh cut grass and weeds. The aroma just pops with waves of fresh citrus and dried tropical fruit.

Medium to medium-full bodied with loads of vibrant acidity, excellent lift and balance, and a brilliant finish that echoes this beer's fruity nature. An aromatic and balanced gem.

I bought a bottle of Breakside IPA in a bottle shop. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a bright gold color, a bit of chill haze, with a modest but thick white head.

Smell is very strong with a lot of citrus aroma.

Taste is also very citrus like. Lemon and grapefruit tend to dominate the subtle malt presence.

Mouthfeel is very crisp but slightly cloying.

Overall a very nice IPA.

Firkin at Bailey's. I'm calling it cask, even though it poured from a bung, same vessel and secondary fermentation for carbination. Appearency is hazy orange with a small off-white head leaving biggish bubbled lace.

Smell is pungent and dank hops, very resinous.

Taste is loaded with hop flavor, heavy citrus, some resin. Fairly bitter. A touch yeasty. A little biscuit malt. Big and brash up front, but reasonably smooth on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chewy and oily.

Drinkability is high a delicous and deliriously fresh IPA with lots of bark but not too muchbite. Really digging this uber fresh firkin, just tapped yesterday.

A: Poured a clear orangish color with good carbonation presenting a nice white cap, a good amount of bubbles and some good lacing. Head retention is nice as it stuck around after several sips.

S: Wow. Nice big citrus, tropical fruit presence. Very nice indeed!

T: An initial blast of tropical fruits (mango and pineapple) only to be followed up by a nice dry bite and a healthy dose of pine.

M: Medium body, well carbonated. Lots of flavor and fruits on the palate, dry, not very oily and a moderate bitterness

O: Very impressed! A solid A IPA in a dog eat dog IPA world.

650ml bomber poured into tulip 9-3-16

A tiny suspended particles in a golden copper body, just a few streams of bubbles but they produce a two finger foam that has some staying power and leaves several partial ringe

S sweet orange, mango, pineapple, maybe some papaya, grapefruit and lemon, lots of tropical notes with this one, some spruce and a hint of brown sugar give it some balance, smells great

T more rind then sweet tropical flesh, piney compared to the nose, some sweet malt, tastes solid but the nose has a slight edge

M lighter side of medium, nice bitter bite, some grit on the palate but slightly sticky on the lips, like chewing on pine needles and lemon rind on the finish

O I've already taken down half the bomber at this point so that says something, A great IPA from start to finish I have no complaints

One of the better IPA's I've had in recent memory for sure, 10$ for a 6.4% bomber isn't cheap but I'm sure I'll get to this one again soon. Yet another little gem on the shelf in Alberta, I'm surprised I've never heard of this one cause its a winner.

A golden orange beer that pours a three finger, eggshell colored head. Leaves moderate lacing. Has lively carbonation.

On the smell, upfront I get notes of mild pine resin. There's a slight custard note from the malt. Everything comes together and starts to play with the perfumey aromas of tropical citrus , predominantly grapefruit and guava.

The taste is exceptionally balanced. You get these tasty, vague little whispers of bitter pine resin upfront. Like the brewery claims, the bitterness is "restrained, yet persistent" which I would say is very accurate.

Things start to get sweeter mid-palate as the malt bill comes into play, revealing slight notes of vanilla, caramel and honey. Juicy and resinous tropical hops which have flavors akin to fruits like mango, orange and papaya provide contrast to the malt and a bittersweet finish. Has a grassy, pauperie like aftertaste.

An easy drinker. Medium body and feel with high carbonation. Low alcohol presence. Not overtly sweet, resinous, watery or dry. Thirst quenching.

Overall: A very clean drinking and balanced IPA that doesn't try to hold the fact that it's hoppy over your head for the entire drinking experience. In a market seemingly dominated by brewer's ceaseless creations and attempts to "out hop" each other - this is a much needed breath of fresh air.

22oz bomber served in a tulip. Pours a clear orange/golden color with a white head. There is some residual lacing. There was a blast of floral notes when opening the bottle. Floral and citrus notes abound. The taste is very well balanced with a slight amount of bitterness on the finish. An very good IPA.

On tap at Brewer's Republic in CO Springs. Nice hazy gold/orange color, one finger head that faded after a bit to a thin film, but left nice lacing. Great aromas of pineapple, mango, and pine, with just a hint of a honey-like smell. Lots of citrus and tropical fruits in the flavors, with mango being prominent. The mouthfeel was thick and oily, really coating the tongue - outstanding. Overall, great beer, lots of good stuff going on here.

This smells dynamite. About 2 months old. Attenuated. Pineapple, mango, papaya and pine. Very balanced. Super delicious. Light and crisp, but very flavorful. Sweetness and bitterness work together. Some dankness. This came out of nowhere. So good.

On tap at URGE Gastropub – Rancho Bernardo, CA
11/07/2014 – Large Goblet style glass

A: Breakside IPA arrives a cloudy orange-amber hue with some light sediment action there. A good finger width of khaki froth slips out to a crown that paints the glass with a few brush strokes of lace after every drink.

S: Mega grapefruit punch to the nose! Holy hops you can pick this one up from across the counter. Catty pee notes with light pine underneath and a touch of mary jane. Some peachy stone fruit as well. Remarkably fresh and oh so pungent.

T: Flavors turn much more herbal with a big ol’ bomber of cat spray and grapefruit. There is a light caramel sweetness underneath to balance and a soft tingly bitterness hitting midway. Somewhat tropical and floral with doses of orchard fruits but man this is some musky herbal CAThmandoo! Diggin’ this one for sure.

M: Lighter moderate body with a nice frothy feel provided buy some even keeled carbonation. Nice touch of resinous bitters and a solid drying out at the finish.

D: This is a great IPA. Impressively fresh and pungent with a very crushable nature. Breakside is really playing to my heartstrings. Catty Simcoes all up in this one. What a great treat to find.

On point IPA from a brewery I have not had a chance to sample. Nice PNW IPA that works with the hops as a complete unit with the malt. Not over the top but rather really well balanced much like Moon Under Water's IPA. The nose is excellent and the colour is reddish in tinge. Would buy this one again which is saying a lot in this bumper crop of IPAs available,
