Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Breakside’s most popular offering is this beautifully clear India Pale Ale featuring the unique character of Citra and Chinook hops. This light copper beer has huge citrus and tropical fruit aromas with hints of perfume and pine. Flavors like apricot, guava, and orange hit the tongue accompanied by a mild evergreen note. There’s just enough caramel sweetness to balance the hop flavors, but this is really a showcase for the beautiful varieties of hops grown here in the Northwest. Like all Breakside beers, this has a notably dry finish and, in true IPA form, a restrained but persistent bitterness. It’s one of the most drinkable IPAs around!

22 oz bottle . No bottling info

Pours a not quite clear copper body with a very slightly off white head. Decent retention and lacing.

I'm getting a lot of pine at first smell. Followed by a grapefruit citrus. I think I'm getting a little sweet malt too. Overall scent was somewhat prominent.

Taste has the grapefruit out front with a little sweet malt. Great red grapefruit bitterness.. Very dry aftertaste. Nice taste overall, but the over the top dry aftertaste isn't quite working for me...

Nice medium feel. Carbonation seemed just right.

Overall; A decent northwest IPA.
....So why do I feel slightly disappointed by this beer ? I've been drinking Breakside's Wanderlust IPA for a couple of years now. It was the only IPA they sold out of state and It's an amazing beer (IMO). I reviewed it the first time I drank it and I gave it a bunch fives because, Well it's that good (again IMO). This beer was good but not like that. Guess Wanderlust just works for me and I will stick with Breakside's Wanderlust IPA in the future.

The appearance was a nice looking slightly hazy to semi - transparent bronzed brown to burnt orange color. The head was just a film of white foaminess just lightly gracing the top of the glass nicely. The smell had a dry to sweet pine to grapefruit-esque sort of underspiced slight pepper. Mmmmm. ..really nice. The taste was basically a dry sort of sweet citrus to underlying pine. A light dry citrus aftertaste accompanies a quick sweet sticky citrus/pine finish. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sessionability about it. The carbonation sat nice for the style and for me. Overall, I say this was an extremely nice AIPA.

On tap at the Pour Taproom in Greenville, SC.

Pours with a clear, light golden body topped by a good off-white head that has very good retention.

Feel: medium-light body with soft, medium carbonation. A tiny bit rough.

Aroma: fruity and dank hops; tropical fruits.

Flavor: Dank and fruity with hints of citrus, pineapple and guava.

Overall: an fine IPA but a touch inferior to the less dank Dayslayer (Stone/Maine) that preceded it.

A 22oz bottle picked up in Denver, Feb'2017

L - Bronze/copper with 1 finger of head and some lacing left on the glass and top of brew. No clarity.

S - Dank hops, with a ton of citrus aromas. Grapefruit, tangerines.

T - Tasty! Orange and grapefruit hits right away. Nice malt backbone character. Well balanced. Very enjoyable

F - Well carbonated, medium body

O - A great IPA. Enjoyed it!

Look: Yellow with hue shift towards copper. Awesome lacing that persists indefinitely.

Smell: This is where the beer shines. There's a lot going on here. Piney apricot with orange and perhaps a hint of pineapple. The Citra + Chinook combo has me a believer!

Taste: Unfortunately, it doesn't have the potency of the scents in the flavor. Light apricot. Pine and dry bitterness grab hold midway through and don't let go. Would have liked a little more fruit up front before the piney bitterness took over... but then again, this is a West Coast IPA and I'm an East Coast native.

Feel: Nice, softish carb. Nothing to complain about here.

Overall: An excellent smelling super dry West Coast IPA. This would go really well with seafood, methinks.... and they tend to have a lot of that along the coast.... sooo....

Picked up a bomber from the Craft Beer Hop Stop in late October for $4.99. No bottling date visible.

Beer poured orange with a nice white head that has some great hang time and is leaving some lacing behind.

Nose is very nice, it is citrus forward with a touch of the tropics.

Taste is moderately bitter with appearances of guava, grapefruit, and pine finishing with a touch of orange rind.

Feel is medium bodied and refreshing.

Overall a really lovely beer, definitely a bargain at the bomber price. I would love to see this in a 12 oz format but doubt we will in Arizona.
