BEER INFO

Brewed by:
Breakside Brewery
Oregon, United States | website

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 6.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Breakside’s most popular offering is this beautifully clear India Pale Ale featuring the unique character of Citra and Chinook hops. This light copper beer has huge citrus and tropical fruit aromas with hints of perfume and pine. Flavors like apricot, guava, and orange hit the tongue accompanied by a mild evergreen note. There’s just enough caramel sweetness to balance the hop flavors, but this is really a showcase for the beautiful varieties of hops grown here in the Northwest. Like all Breakside beers, this has a notably dry finish and, in true IPA form, a restrained but persistent bitterness. It’s one of the most drinkable IPAs around!

a fantastic west coast ipa here. so bright, drinkable, and distinct, just the way i like them. cheap too, this bomber was less than 5 bucks! sunset orange color with just the right amount of haze to let me know its unfiltered, and an inch or so of lasting and thick soapy white head. the nose is tantalizing fresh hops, citrusy, with notes of grapefruit rind and sweet orange, and then the attendant bitterness. its got big resinous aromas, but it doesnt have that thick syrupy honey textured thing we sometimes get weighing down the west coast india pales. this one stays light and bright, clean tasting, super fresh, still sappy and dank, but not heavy with it. i almost get some lime in the finish, this is magnificently refreshing with its high carbonation and only medium body. the alcohol is also right on for the style, i could drink several pints of this and be comfortable, its not too high or too low. my first beer from breakside is a absolute winner, cant wait to encounter more of this stuff!

on tap at Punch Bowl Social, Portland

Bright brass.
Simcoe nose: pine, cat, passionfruit.
Caramel and apricot, then dank, pineapple, and resin hops.
Light to medium, oily, chewy.

Gooey hop hit in a light body. Sticky and fun. Pale and round but blah.

Serving Type: Bottle, bomber-size.

Appearance: pours hazy amber with small off-white head.

Smell: Citrus, mostly grapefruit with a faint sort of spruce-like finish.

Taste: Very flavorful, citrus, mostly grapefruit.

Mouth feel: Lightish mouth feel for what is otherwise an outstanding IPA, I like my IPA with a silkier or slightly viscous mouth feel so I didn't rate this IPA as highly.

Overall: An outstanding IPA and well worth the effort to find it on tap.

Floral & grapefruit aroma with some vanilla notes. Pours semi-hazy, gold / orange in color with a thick head and lots of lacing, slow to dissipate. Taste is heavy! pine and lots of grapefruit hops, some floral notes, almost chewy in the mouth with a bitter, resin-y finish. A little too thick & chewy & "hop-dank" resinous for me but still a very good beer. Others will obviously love this and Breakside is an excellent brewery.

Poured a finger of head on a clearer medium straw colored body.
The aroma is bright lemon, grapefruit and orange. A wonderful combination.
The taste is moderate to strong bitterness of grapefruit. It's balanced nicely with the malt.
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
A really nice IPA.

Had this tonight at the 10 Barrel Boise IPA Beer Wars and it was certainly in my top 3 of the 16 IPA's on tap tonight.

Orange brew with a nice hop haze... great head and lacing.

Tropical fruity hoppiness punctuated by a big grapefruit zest essence... very balanced light pale malt presence.

Very drinkable with a light body and good carbonation... seems pretty damn fresh.

On point IPA from a brewery I have not had a chance to sample. Nice PNW IPA that works with the hops as a complete unit with the malt. Not over the top but rather really well balanced much like Moon Under Water's IPA. The nose is excellent and the colour is reddish in tinge. Would buy this one again which is saying a lot in this bumper crop of IPAs available,

22 oz bottle.

Appearance- Pours an amber copper with two fingers of bubbly white head.

Smell- Citrus hops, pine resin, caramalts, tropical fruits.

Taste- Citrus hops, pine resin, caramalts, tropical fruits. The hops are more reserved for the style.

Mouthfeel- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Overall- An American IPA that is more reserved on the hop front. Besides this, an enjoyable IPA by Breakside.

Pours a nice copper/orange colour.
Heavy citrus with a slight malt backup
Very grapefruity , maybe an orange undertone, slight lime
Same as the smell....delicious
Just a good very drinkable brew with a great aftertaste
I really like this brew, II'll be buying more for sure....it reminds me of Hop Henge or Union Jack....not to heavy , not to lite, just right.

Appearance- Pours up a fair amount of head which seems to have some retention. The head is a pure cotton white and the body is a slightly hazy medium amber/honey which glows orange when held up to the light. The retention seems to be holding more than I thought and there is noticeable lacing.

Nose- Very warm and inviting. The bottle seems to focus the aroma into a musky grapefruit scent while the nose from the glass is more traditional citrus fruits with tropical fruits as well. Some pine and resin as well. A little bit of matchstick and spicy green fruit. Good lacing but not great. Head retention is steady. A little bit of armpit, dirty sock aroma to boot. Huge notes of melon come out as this opens up more.

Taste- Heavy grapefruit to start off with- it's hard for me not to assume that Amarillo hops are used in this beer. Heavy matchstick, pine, resin, and wood. The tropical fruit of the nose seems to be much more muted as more evergreen notes come into play. However, this is a very well rounded evergreen profile. Earwax and musty armpit notes seem to work around the edges of every other profile note. There are melon notes also. Pretty good beer and a solid IPA but unfortunately it is that- just another solid IPA. It is very balanced and well rounded. Earwax bitterness seems to dominate the finish though.

Mouthfeel- Fairly light bodied. Light carbonation- maybe could use a little bit more.

Drinkability- Perhaps a little too much resin and matchstick for my taste at the time but I could see this having some sessionability.

Overall- Solid IPA. Good but not great. I haven't tried Breakside before but I am glad this on my bus route. I will be checking out more of their beers.

A: Poured a clear orangish color with good carbonation presenting a nice white cap, a good amount of bubbles and some good lacing. Head retention is nice as it stuck around after several sips.

S: Wow. Nice big citrus, tropical fruit presence. Very nice indeed!

T: An initial blast of tropical fruits (mango and pineapple) only to be followed up by a nice dry bite and a healthy dose of pine.

M: Medium body, well carbonated. Lots of flavor and fruits on the palate, dry, not very oily and a moderate bitterness

O: Very impressed! A solid A IPA in a dog eat dog IPA world.

22oz : SN IPA Glass

Pours a clear, coppery orange with a thick, foamy off white head.

The nose is big citric grapefruit notes without being overwhelming. The taste is more of the same, though more fairly balanced with sweet pale and caramel malt notes.

Medium+ body, mild foamy carbonation.

Another well done IPA from the Pacific NW. Big hop notes, but balanced with a pleasant malt backing so it stays easy drinking.

Firkin at Bailey's. I'm calling it cask, even though it poured from a bung, same vessel and secondary fermentation for carbination. Appearency is hazy orange with a small off-white head leaving biggish bubbled lace.

Smell is pungent and dank hops, very resinous.

Taste is loaded with hop flavor, heavy citrus, some resin. Fairly bitter. A touch yeasty. A little biscuit malt. Big and brash up front, but reasonably smooth on the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied, chewy and oily.

Drinkability is high a delicous and deliriously fresh IPA with lots of bark but not too muchbite. Really digging this uber fresh firkin, just tapped yesterday.

Served on tap at the Breakside Brewpub.
Appearance cloudy clearly unfiltered. Citrus notes in the aroma.
Taste? Nothing refined about this beer. An attack on the senses. Grapefruit that sucks the cheeks into the mouth. As if they infused the beer with grapefruit rind.
Loved it.
Have to tick down a notch on mouthfeel though. Just doesn't linger well.
All in all a fun experience. I'm glad I had a chance to tic this one off.

appearance - nice transparent orange with offwhite head, foamy, not much lacing

smell - citrus aromas

taste - grapefruit/citrus and pine hop profile, very hop forward, nice body but the malts play a backdrop

mouthfeel - medium body, great carbonation, medium dry finish

overall - a solid ipa in a saturated market, excellent flavor profile, would definitely seek this out again

First had: on tap at their brewpub

Poured a clearish golden yellow with a small cap of bubbly white head. Aroma is dominated by hops. Taste of piney hops, lemon and orange zest, grassy, light spice, and subdued malts in the background. Medium-bodied and easily drinkable.

Pretty decent IPA, more of an in-between style. Not too aggressive with the hops or malts.

Pours a pretty spot on IPA hue, that straw core with light white head, decent retention fades to an average lace.

Smells mostly of mild hops, not too in your face. Some mild citrus, white pepper, and grass notes. The palate is mostly mild malts and medium astringent hops. Not as malted as Ft George Vortex, not as aggressive as most PDX IPAs. Really well balanced IPA meant more as a good pub friendly beverage.
