I am continuing a swath of total destruction & annihilation of the Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody! I only have a couple from Full Pint, but they are next up. Afterwards, it is on to Fish Tale Ales and the babes of Old Dominion.

From the bottle: "White Lightning [-] This Belgian-Style White Ale combines a complex malt character with sweet orange peel, coriander and grains of paradise. The end result is a shockingly refreshing wheat beer that can be enjoyed all year long."; "Belgian-style Wheat Ale brewed with Spices"; "Beer Nerd Stats: Malts: Pilsner, Wheat Vienna, Flaked Oats, Barley Hops: Northern Brewer O.G. 13.5 IBU 18 Alc. By Vol. 6.0%"

I Pop!ped the cap & got an aggro pour started to keep everything in suspension. This resulted in the formation of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head that took its time in falling. Color was an absolutely cloudy Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) & looked like a Witbier should. Nose was heavy on the orange peel, but I was also getting a lot of pepperiness from both the adjunct spices as well as the yeast. Mouthfeel was medium with a lot of carbonation, giving it a tickling sensation on my tongue. Hee hee. It just seems appropriate to put on George Jones' version of "White Lightning" as the soundtrack. The taste was citrusy and spicy, but as Los Hermanos Alstrom said in their review: "... this one had a leg up on most with its sheer balance alone. Nails all of the characteristics you look for in this style ..." Amen to that! I am not a big fan of the style, generally, but this was really nice! More often than not, Witbiers taste like the spice rack fell into the boil, overwhelming everything else. Here, there was a breadiness from the malt, a nice orange citrusiness & just enough spice to be refreshing without being overpowering. I beg to differ, though, in that the finish struck me as dry, mostly because of the inclusion of spices. I agree that it is a very good beer & one that I would definitely want on a hot, humid summer's day. Now, could you maybe put it in CANs? Please?

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #76 (May 2013):

A gem in hiding. Having had numerous Witbiers in our travels, this one had a leg up on most with its sheer balance alone. Nails all of the characteristics you look for in this style and a bit bigger than usual at 6% ABV, but still drinkable nonetheless.

STYLE: Witbier
ABV: 6.0%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Hazy straw, lots of lace

SMELL: Orange peel, pithy, yeasty, bready, mildly spicy, coriander

TASTE: Incredibly smooth, slightly creamy, very bready, spicy, hint of alcohol, orange peel, zest, coriander, nutty, ripe plums, semidry finish

Full Pint Brewing "White Lightning Wit"
12 oz. bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$1.99 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA

Notes: Quite cloudy, even in the bottle. Same in glass. Odd, lack of head retention. No lacing. Doesn't appear to have a lot of carbonation. Aroma is nice. Coriander, yeast, wheat, some citrus rind and juice. Flavor is better, adding some lemon and apple to round it out. Not over-spiced. Nicely balanced. Moderate bitterness leads into a dry finish accentuated by coriander spiciness. Carbonation is there, delicately bristling on the tongue; very fine-bubbled. Light-medium in body. Some acidity. Spot-on for the style with the exception of the clarity, which is still OK; and maybe it could use a touch more carbonation, but again OK. Charming. Remarkably drinkable. Need to find more from these guys.

I haven't done a beer review in a while, but since this is from my beloved Pittsburgh, I felt that it was necessary to sit down and rate this beer. I've seen this beer for a few months now at the local Wegman's, so I decided to give it a shot, even though I'm rather leery of drinking another beer from Pittsburgh, given that Iron City is like drinking carbonated sewer water with yellow food coloring added. Let's face it, Pittsburgh is famous for sports, steel, and Primanti's; beer, not so much.

Apperance: Pouring White Lightning into a glass gives me reason to pause and become concerned already. It pours a hazy, yellow color. The head disappears rapidly, within fifteen seconds. Absolutely no lacing. My concern has become doubt.

Smell: Sitting here for three minutes smelling this beer before tasting. My doubt has deepened. I can't pin the smell down. The label says that it is brewed with coriander and grains of paradise, with orange peel, but I can't smell any of those ingredients. It just smells sour to me.

Taste: Pleasantly surprised! The spices and orange really begin to pop out as I roll the beer around my palate. Slightly malty, light hoppy flavor. I'm liking this beer now.

The mouthfeel is smooth, but not watery. There's a very light bite on your tongue with every sip. Refreshing.

Overall, this beer is pleasant. My trust in Pittsburgh beers has increased a few points. Definitely worth the buy if you're looking for a switch from your regular beer of choice.

Bought from the Beer Store in Moon, pours a slightly hazed golden hue with a bright white head fine lacing followed around the sides of my pint glass. Aroma has sharp coriander citrus wheat notes and evident spicy grains of pardise forming in my nares. Flavors drink well actually with a refreshing tart white ale presence...sharp wheat brings on some citrus qualities maybe a bit of citrus peels. Mouthfeel is medium bodied efffervescent light and spritzy carbonation, goes down easiliy. Another well made Full Pint brew, how many brewers does it take to screw in a light bulb, I'm kidding this is just solid good brewing I'm glad this was a collaboration white ale.

DATE: April 23, 2016... OCCASION: seeking refreshment after a long day of charity car washing and baseball in the Meadows... GLASSWARE: Victory Rare Vos pint... APPEARANCE: sizzles as it pours a murky, bubbly yellow-blonde body with a rim of uneven of-white froth... AROMA: orange peel and lemon zest, with lightly toasted oats providing a pleasant, inviting aroma... apple and pear may come courtesy of the Northern Brewer hops, as does the wood pulp... PALATE: medium-bodied for a white ale; reasonably vibrant, with enough effervescence to refresh... leaves a slight aftertaste that is bitter and lemony... TASTE: Is the secret spice ginger? Grains of Paradise? Either way, the flavor is lemon, coriander, orange, apple and pear, and a sweetening pepper... the malts are not as pronounced as the label may suggest, but oats and toasted grains give the taste buds much to mull... OVERALL: not going to replace my favored wits, this is a serviceable, sessionable (although the label states 6% ABV) summer evocation... the sum is greater than the weight of its individual parts...

Boulevard's in J'Town, PA had another decent offering of the Full Pint version of Blue Moon...White Lighning Wit. The beear poured a hazy yellow color with decent carbonation, white thin head that dissipates quickly, some lacing. Smell light wheat malt, slight biscuit, hints of spice and lemon, slightly bitter. Taste is basically a dead ringer for Blue Moon....with some spice hints of lemon/citrus. Adding an orange peel...really made this a good beer. Mouthfeel is was good....nice lighter drinkable beer. Overall, nicely done witbier.
