Brown colored brew with a slight red tinge and a thin tan head. Lots of bubbles seen rising to feed the thin head. Scent is of vanilla and brown ale malt with some slight nutmeg or maybe mace? This beer almost has a soda quality both on the nose and the flavor. Very gentle and somewhat sweet flavor. Sort of like a watered down brown or a vanilla soda. Not a lot of carbonation. Easy to drink I guess.

Poured into a custom shaped grip glass: color is hazy amber/light brown, head is off white to light tan in color, head presents 1/4 inch thick and dissipates to a ring with some lacing.

Smell is mix of spice with vanilla, light cinnamon, hint of nutmeg, some light caramel malt.

Taste is more muddled than the aroma, blend of spices with vanilla, cinnamon; malt flavor is neutral and bland.

Mouthfeel is a bit flat, dry, and watery at times.

Overall an ok winter spice ale, spices are mixed but malt character is low for a brown ale or strong ale style.

Poured flat ruby red. No head. Little carbonation. No lacing. Taste? Malty dishwater. This is very watery and bland. Very disapointed.

Was excited when I poured it, has a lovely reddish color. Then I tasted it. what a disappointment, this beer is totally bland, no hint of winter spices.

It has been that kind of #PenguinAwarenessDay in that the Bottle Backlog keeps sending forth spiced ales as though it were the dead of winter and a major snowstorm is in the forecast! Oh, wait ...

From the bottle: "A Holiday Ale for the Non-conformist, Festivus is the perfect beer to 'air your grievances over'. This mildly spiced brown ale is malty throughout with a subtle hop nose." "Beer Nerd Stats: Spices: Cinnamon, Vanilla, Mace[;] Malts: Pilsner, Munich, Honey Dark Crystal, Melanoidin, Chocolate[;] Hops: Simcoe".

I Pop!ped the cap and began a gentle pour since it had some age on it. A swirl raised a brief finger of foamy, light-tan head that was quick to air its grievances and disappear. It took a feat of strength to lift it to my nose, but the vanilla was as strong as extract and the cinnamon lurked beneath it, ready to jump out from behind the unadorned aluminum pole where it was hiding. Color was Brown to Dark Brown (SRM = > 22, < 27) with NE-quality clarity & amber highlights. Mouthfeel was medium. Holy Vanilla, Batman! I remember, as a beginning student of the culinary arts, misreading the recipe and using WAY more vanilla extract than was called for in a cake. The kitchen filled with the smell of vanilla as the cake baked and when it was done, everybody clamored for a piece! I like vanilla & in looking at the label, the vanilla plant is in the foreground, atop the cinnamon sticks. Great subtle advertising! Oh, yes, Virginia, there was cinnamon, but it chose not to assert itself until the finish, when it revealed its allegiance with mace & brought tears to my eyes. Dry? Zephyr winds blowing across the Sahara Desert are less dry! Phew. Happy holidays!

One of my favorite seasonal beers. Dark, flavorful and compliments food well. Love it!
