On tap at Bierport in Pittsburgh, PA.

This one pours a very dark brown, nearly black, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

Smells like citrus, pine, heavily burnt and roasted malt, and some powdery chocolate.

This is quite hoppy for a stout, but I don't really mind that. The malt character feels very burnt, this is probably amplified because of the heavy duty pine presence. There's some citrusy sweetness, and a little bit of chocolate, with some coffee, too. The flavors are a bit thin, though, I don't mind the hoppiness, but I'd prefer the stout aspect to be a bit bolder.

This is kinda thin-bodied, with a good level of carbonation.

I think this is better than the ratings suggest, but it's certainly far from perfect.

I can't believe somebody tasted this and thought "Oh wow, this is good! Let's try and market it to make money". What I really can't believe is that it did. Down the drain it goes.

-Best by 03.22.15. Consumed 02.24.16.

A: Beautiful viscose black licorice pour that shines out the bottle into the vessel in the light. A dark bronze 0.5 inch head is relatively lasting while the lacing is very light and spacious. The coloring and head color is the highlight here.

S: Fresh cocoa and milk. Sweet caramel and sweet dark fruit of figs and sugary plums. Things finish out with some light burnt molasses and raisins. A good level of intensity and holds its own. Very hoppy.

T: Flavor feels a bit thin substance wise. Some coffee, but not really robust. A decent bitterness, earthy charred hop flowers and smokey vegetative matter. Leaves with a good finish of burnt bitterness and roasted nuttiness. Dry milk and raw cocoa and burnt pine and burnt citrus peel.

M: Some decent carbonation, oily texture, a bit light on the medium side, slick. More porter like.

O: Not sure how the year long layover has affected this. Really hoppy with a burnt bitterness, drinks more like a black ipa then an american stout. The 7% is hidden rather well.
