Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a "balloon" glass.
Deep and dark, with a moderate-to-short head of tan foam.
Aroma-Citrussy hops and dark malt
Taste-Bitter black coffee and citrus rind. Flavors seem to fight each other rather than complementing. A bitter mix of flavors that don't play well together.

Appearance: A gusher so by the time the liquid appears in the pint glass the huge head dominates; plenty of lace, of course, and eventually the black liquid presents itself with ruby highlights

Smell: Roasty and charred, with dark chocolate tones and a surprising amount of citrusy hops

Taste: Burnt toast and chocolate, up front, but by mid-palate, the citrusy hops prevail; after the swallow, the chocolate tones re-emerge though the bitterness persists into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: This has been in my cellar for a while after receiving it as an extra in a trade; after it gushed, I thought it might be infected and noted the "best by" date had passed over seven months ago; still, once the beer settled down I was able to enjoy what remained in the bottle and it was rather hoppy indeed, despite the age

"Best by Feb 2014" printed on the bottle.

The beer pours a half finger of rich brown head over a nearly black body. The head disappears in moments. No lace noted.

Malt and baker's chocolate are strong. A little coffee fills it out.

Malt and very bitter coffee are the main flavors here. Almost needs some creamer or something...

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and meh. It seems like it ought to be creamier.

Gonna be drinking this with the new Walking Dead show..

A-black with a nice thick brown head. looks perfect.

S-actually smells fairly hoppy with a good amount of cocoa to it as well. it's a good mix, so it smells like a black IPA to me. there's a good strength to it.

T-comes in with a great flavor of aged hops and strong bitter chocolate covered cocoa beans. it's a really great flavor with a good roast to it. the after-taste is matching and quite strong. it's a very long lasting flavor, quite impressive.

M-medium creamy carbonation with a nice creamy finish.

O-this is actually an amazing beer. the flavors are all strong and bold. it's definitely a hoppy stout, with the main focus on dark roasted grains, but still with a good hint of hops in there as well. very natural tasting. no off flavors.

Inky black appearance with a nice dark tan head. The smell is almost like an ale more than a stout. The hops hits your nose harder than the roasted malt. The taste is hoppier than any stout I have ever tried. Other than that it has all the roasted malt charictaristics of a nicely done stout, a bit of chocolate flavor with nice smokey malt. The mouthfeel is gritty like a stout should be. Worth a try for anyone who loves APA and IPA who is out for stout!

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Black as night with a 1/4 inch head, minor lacing.

Smell - Smokey malts, hops, dark fruits like plums and raisins, licorice and coffee.

Taste - Well my goodness, the hops are very strong and upfront. Very bitter with some smokey malts mixed in along with some bitter coffee, making this very bitter. I get a bacon flavor near the finish, along with a some minor fruits.

Mouthfeel - The tongue gets nailed with dry hops and bitter coffee and malts. Palate gets more of the same with a dry irish stout like feel. Aftertaste is dry and bitter.

Overall - This one is rather odd. I know its listed as a west coast stout but its much closer to a black ale. The hops mixed with coffee really make it a bitter drink. Once you adjust to the flavors its enjoyable but its not something id want to drink all the time.

Black as the pit from pole to pole, the aroma is dominated by deeply roasted malt and charred wood. Velvety and smooth texture. Then WHAM! those hops hit. This would be shocking if you expected a stout but didn’t know the IBU content! Toasted malt, smoke, and charred wood stand up to the intensely bitter hops.

Pours very dark into a tulip glass with a 1.5" tan head. The head lingers lightly as you drink, but returns quickly with a slight swirl. Subtle lacing.

The smell is roasty with a good dose of cascade hops. Slight hints of chocolate can be picked up.

The taste is a nice balance of roasted malt and hop bitterness. The cascade bitterness comes through pretty firm, but works well with this brew. A little sweetness lingers on the tongue after the bitterness of the hops has passed.

Mouthfeel is medium/thick with good carbonation.

All in all, this is a really good brew. The large, citrusy hop profile separates it from other stouts. While drinking this I'm reminded of Troegs Dead Reckoning.
