Brewed by:
Galway Bay Brewery
Ireland
galwaybaybrewery.com

Style: American IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.80%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
The simple malt bill gives an ABV of 5.8% which carries the flavour and really allows the hops to shine through. The hops used are of American origin, Colombus, El Dorado and Cascade (45 IBU). With multiple generous additions in the kettle and further dry hopped before it reaches you as fresh as it can be!

On draft in any of the Galway Bay Brewery Bars (although I certainly find Salthouse in Galway the best), this is an absolutely stunning IPA. Not comparable to the bottle format. It really is just something very special on draft. I have sampled every tap IPA on offer in Brew Dog bars for example and this comes out ahead.

Pours a light, gold/orange colour. Smells crisp, citrus hops, slightly grainy, and light. Tastes similar to the smell, crisp-hoppy, citrus, slightly bitter, clean grains, a bit of a dry mouthfeel, but a very easy going IPA.

On-tap at Against The Grain, Dublin, Ireland

A: The beer is hazy amber yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high white head.
S: Light aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose.
T: Like the smell, the taste has some flavors of citrusy hops and a light to moderate amount of associated bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer tastes more like an English IPA but is very flavorful for the style—having a good amount of citrusy flavors—compared to other Irish IPAs.

golden brown with generous frothy head, aroma is malty, distinctly hoppy , flavour is full well-balanced a top-notch beer, hoppy but smooth, fresh-tasting, one of the very best, possibly the best Irish beer, and even better on tap!

Webby eggshell head over pale amber body with plenty of fizz.
Big resin and herbal hop nose with orange segments, too.
Some apricot and caramel but bitter citrus rind cuts in right away with some pear and grass.
Watermelon and orange blossom finish and powdery linger.
Lt-med, some chew, round.

Relaunched, now Columbus, El Dorado and Cascade (45 IBU).

With these hops at 45 IBUs, this should be aroma over bitterness, but that's not happening here. I get (or project) some of the fruit candy notes of El Dorado, but it's tough to work around dry hop grassiness and chalky bitterness. Nothing like the freshness of a Lagunitas which, if you're at the low end of IBU and ABV for an American IPA and don't have a supercrisp body (which this doesn't), is really what you should go for.

Modest success, which is another way of saying unfulfilled potential.

500ml Bottle from McCambridges of Galway, Ireland (€3.99):
Great stuff, a truly excellent beer from Galway Bay & probably the best Irish beer that I've tried to date; I really enjoyed this one. The beer got off to a great start with plenty of hops & a solid caramel sweetness helping to level things out before the tropical fruits started to appear around the middle to the beer. I found the beer to have plenty of variety with some citrus & zesty flavours featuring alongside an earthy bitterness at times but the beer was still a very easy one to drink; outstanding stuff & I can't wait to crack open their double IPA now & see if that can go one better than this.
