Amazing stout, the sorghum/honey flavors steal the show!

Poured into a teku pint. No freshness date.
A- Pours a fully opaque black color with a 1/2 inch tan head that retains well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a mostly full sheet of surface foam. Resilient lacing leaves large clots behind.
S- Smells of coffee, vanilla and milk chocolate. Not getting a whole lot of bourbon.
T- Very roasty and charry with the barrel carrying with it a slight bit of vanilla quality to balance. Again, not really getting a whole lot of barrel here, just hints here and there. Has a slight metallic finish to it that fades as it warms. The ABV is very well hidden.
M- Creamy, thick and viscous with medium-low carbonation and the fullest of bodies.
O- I think this might have done better had they aged it on the barrel longer. It seems like the base beer is such a giant that the barrel had only really just begun to tame it and amplify its character. I will say the mouthfeel is outstanding.

Drain Pour. The only beer that has made me mad. Total waste .
Brewery should NOT have let this one out.

Opened bottle with some friends. Smell is roasted malts. Taste is of roasted malts and a bit of sourness. No barrel whatsoever. Wondering if this was infected. Wasn't bad, but definitely underwhelming.

22oz bottle from Bruisin Ales (Asheville, NC). 17.25. No bottling date. Served in a Burial snifter.
Pours black with a full three finger cap of tan foam. The head eventually settles to a thin layer with a wide halo, leaving some thick patches of lace.
Nose is ripe with barrel funk and supporting notes of dark fruit, vague roast and faint cocoa. If the aromas carry over into flavor this could be a soured mess.
Luckily the taste is not quite as over powered by the barrel funk as was the smell. A strong roasted malt vibe helps offset the souring. Dark fruit skins, cocoa, roast, coffee, wet oak and some slight booze. There are some acceptable flavors but they are ruined by an off fruitiness and souring barrel. Unfortunate.
Medium creamy feel with moderate carbonation. The finish is dominated by the sour barrel funk with some hints of dark fruit and cocoa.
Tastes like this was infected. If I had an idea of when Juaculla was released I would be willing to possibly give it a pass as an off bottle but with no bottling date it would seem Nantahala is unconcerned. I'd like to know if this bottle, purchased in early May, has soured as a result of poor aging conditions or if it is this bad when fresh. Setting aside the spoilage and my personal vendetta against breweries that refuse to clearly date their products, the base beer is underwhelming with no bourbon and only a slight wet oak note to show for its time in a barrel. Utterly disappointing.
