Few things are as malleable, ductile, and conductive to a good time as Element 29. This juicy, hop-forward, copper hued, fine American Pale Ale has a full malt profile kept in check by a pleasant citrus bitteness. No copper is added to this product.

Pours a rich amber color with two fingers worth of head that dissipates fairly quickly. Aroma is faintly of citrus fruits, orange zest, grapefruit. Some caramel, malts and floral notes are also present. Taste is balanced between light citrus/floral hops and caramel/biscuity notes from the malts. A little underwhelming but very easy drinking. Mouth feel is good with great carbonation and a light to medium body that goes down smooth. Overall a middle of the road APA that I would argue not very APA like.

No canning date.

Appearance: Opaque medium caramel color with a thin white film of froth. Some visible sediment throughout.

Aroma: Caramel malts and something a little off, like oxidized hops.

Taste: Lots of caramel malts but not overly sweet. Clean hop bitterness at a light to moderate level. This strikes a pretty nice balance. A tad watery but not bad for 5.2% ABV. Missing a bit of the biscuit/bready flavor that I look forward to in APAs. Finish is light bitterness followed by an aftertaste of reverberating bitterness and some slight malt off-flavor (like astringent caramel).

Mouthfeel: Between thin and medium in body with aggressive carbonation. Below average drinkability for the style.

Final Thoughts: Maybe it was an old can but this one really didn't do anything for me. One of the more average APAs I've had in recent memory. Epic makes some great beers but this is not one of them. Would I drink it again? No.

The past few days have seen me attempting to clear some of the beer backlog here at Chez Woody, especially focusing on CANs. I had to do a triage and cull the APAs/AIPAs/DIPAs to be CANsumed first, but even as a hophead, it CAN be tough to drink so many hoppy beers in a row. Such are the trials and tribulations of The CANQuest (tm) but donations are always welcomed!

From the CAN: "Few things are as malleable, ductile, and [CAN]ductive to a good time as the Element 29."; "This juicy, hop forward, copper hued, fine Ameri[CAN] Pale Ale has a full malt profile kept in check by a pleasant citrus bitterness."; "No Copper is added to this product." Dang! I was going to buy a case and take it to the recycler!

The Crack! went off as planned and I CANmenced a gentle Glug so as not to disturb any lees that may have formed. It worked! I got a finger of foamy, tawny head with reasonable retention. Color was Deep Amber/Light Copper to Copper (SRM = > 13, < 17) with NE-quality clarity. Cu = Copper, 29 so kudos for truth in advertising. Nose had the familiar citrusy tang of grapefruit. Mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. I now understand why the description lists the malt first. The taste was initially very biscuity, followed by the bitterness of the hops. It made me think more of an English Pale Ale, but it was still quite drinkable. Actually, it was a very mellow beer, one that put me in mind of hop tea. Man, I suddenly feel kind of sleepy. Finish was dry, like unsweetened sun tea. Dig it.

Dark gold body; thick, three-finger plus head; lots of yeast sediment (poured from a can!). Heady floral and fruit aroma; strawberries; honey dew melon. Mild malt grain flavors and sweetness; hop bitterness grows strongly and lingers long at the finish. Medium body; soft and delicate on the palate; very dry finish.

A fair pale ale although it doesn't quite live up to the promise of its aroma when getting to the taste, plus the mouthfeel seems disjointed from the beer's floral and fruit aroma. It doesn't offer a lot of gelled depth or complexity yet still drinks easily enough. Okay but faceless...

12 ounce can into pint glass, no canning date. Pours very hazy/cloudy deep orange/amber color with a 1 finger dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, caramel, toast, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of citrus hops and dark/bready malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, caramel, toast, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of grapefruit, tangerine, lemon/orange zest, light pine, caramel, toast, biscuit, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Good balance and robustness of citrus hops and dark/bready malt flavors; with a good malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very solid pale ale. All around good balance and robustness of citrus hops and dark/bready malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.
