Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Son of a Baptist is an 8% ABV imperial stout. It is not barrel aged like its father, Big Bad Baptist; instead its flavor profile was designed to highlight the complex and often unique flavors of small batch coffees. Instead of sourcing a coffee that would play well in a beer we sought out creative and innovative roasters, then asked them which beans they’re passionate about. Each resulting release of Son of a Baptist is widely different depending on the coffee selected. Some are fruity and sweet with notes of jam and chocolate, others are rich and earthy with a big roasted finish. Each limited release will return to the Roaster’s home market where the beer and the coffee can be sampled side by side.

Poured from fridge temp into a taster. Pours motor oil black with quickly dissipating head. Nose is all coffee and chocolate. Amazing! Also getting lower level notes of vanilla, red grapes, leather, molasses, and char. Taste is super smooth and tasty. Getting bitter coffee notes upfront, just as described. Really love being slammed in the face by the coffee on this one. Less complex than the nose would suggest - getting some maple, vanilla, tree sap, and chocolate. Fairly thin body, which isn't surprising given the relatively lower (8%) ABV compared to big stouts. Overall, a really nice, and very drinkable, coffee stout. Definitely worth the $2.50 that I paid for the can.

Poured from the tap into a tulip glass. The appearance is as black as your darkest nightmare and topped with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is coffee, roasted malt and chocolate. The taste is an incredible blend of the ingredients described by the nose.

New 2018 batch. Bottle at the brewery.

Light tan head. Black color. Lots of coffee. Light roast. Cocoa and chocolate. Some caramel. Smooth and easy drinking. Very enjoyable.

Had this on tap in a tulip. Color was dark brown with a medium tan head which left good lacing. Smell was malty and strong Rising Star coffee. Taste was wonderful with the base stout just superb. Mouthfeel was very rich but quenching. A very good experience.

This is my favorite stout. Not sweet. Smells of coffee and chocolate, but mostly coffee. Mouthfeel is medium thick. Tastes like the most wonderful coffee stout, slightly bitter. This must be my 7th 6-pack of this brew. Everytime i have another stout i compare it to this so it must be my favorite. I dare you not to like it.

Very well-done coffee stout. Nice dark black color with some tan head and lingering lacing. Smells of dark roast coffee, vanilla and caramel. Tastes of dark coffee, vanilla, malt, caramel and a little dark chocolate. Nice smooth flavors, mild mouthfeel, good amount of carbonation. Basically no bitterness and nice coffee aftertaste. Will check out others from this brewery.

It does what it says on the label exceptionally well, and nothing extra. A strong, but not overpowering coffee taste with cacao coming in to even the taste at the end. Highly recommend trying on nitro, if available.

It had been looking at me from the shelf for so long, I just had to indulge it. *Corvus* version...

Appearance is pure black, and a tann-ish/mocha head that gave way shortly after pouring. Purely opaque.

Aroma is very good. Earthy, vibrant black coffee. It has a nice roast to it.

Taste profile starts out with a total roasted coffee note. Fine black grounds, but somewhat acidic and not as ferocious as some coffee stouts.

For a Stout with a strong nose and predominant coffee flavor, this one takes a softer approach on the palate. Maybe even playing it safe.

This one is an easy to nurse, fun to drink coffee stout. I'd like to try other variants but at the same time, could totally be satisfied with this one.

12oz can, stamped on the bottom but it's smudged. Dark brown colored ale with a frothy tan head that fades to a foam. Great coffee and cacao nib aroma. Nice modest meld of flavors with notes of milk chocolate, creamed coffee, roasted barley, and earthy hops. Full creamy body, modest carbonation, finishes with just enough of a roasty & mild hoppy bite to remind you that you're drinking a beer. Really good!
