Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Son of a Baptist is an 8% ABV imperial stout. It is not barrel aged like its father, Big Bad Baptist; instead its flavor profile was designed to highlight the complex and often unique flavors of small batch coffees. Instead of sourcing a coffee that would play well in a beer we sought out creative and innovative roasters, then asked them which beans they’re passionate about. Each resulting release of Son of a Baptist is widely different depending on the coffee selected. Some are fruity and sweet with notes of jam and chocolate, others are rich and earthy with a big roasted finish. Each limited release will return to the Roaster’s home market where the beer and the coffee can be sampled side by side.

Brownie. Son Of A Baptist is as much like a Brownie as I have ever tasted in a stout. Chocolate, sugar, nutty, a bit of wheat in with the barely. There is the divergent issue of coffee... but maybe they should be in brownies.

Looks its pay grade as a highly rated double. Smells are the fresh brownie, plus the coffee. Tastes is about the same, but the chocolate comes in as bitter-sweet... probably some hops and heavy roasting do that. SOB sits in my mouth a bit dry for a brownie. However, any brew that craftfully combines my two favorite beverages will always be a friend.

OA: I like how they make SOB every year using a different small craft roaster and serve the stout next to the coffee. A creative fusion.

Wow.
12oz nitro draft pour shows a gorgeous black and tan. Easily a 2in tan tight bubbled head that leaves generous leopard skin patterned lacing.

Aroma is roasty combination of cocoa and coffee.

Flavors are more milk chocolate leaning, with a hint of roasted coffee beans. Very light sweetness just to cut the bitterness.

Mouthfeel is nitro soft and finishes wet.

Overall a great beer for the nitro presentation.

Poured black with a one finger tan foamy head that dissipated to a thin film. Moderate lacing present. Aroma of dark roast coffee, cocoa, cream and malt. Very well balanced taste of coffee, malt, dark chocolate and malt. The body is moderate - thick with light carbonation. This is a very nice stout that I would buy again.

Canned December 2017; drank 4/14/18 @ the Yarchives.

Black/brown appearance.

A rough pour yielded a nice tan head; strong, frothy lace.

Dark roast coffee bean, chocolate syrup & faint fresh earth notes in the nose.

Creamy medium thick mouthfeel.

Dark roast coffee bean & faint fresh earth flavors up front; chocolate syrup notes on the finish.

A rich, dark, roasty brew; enjoyable but not very well balanced.
