Son of a Baptist is an 8% ABV imperial stout. It is not barrel aged like its father, Big Bad Baptist; instead its flavor profile was designed to highlight the complex and often unique flavors of small batch coffees. Instead of sourcing a coffee that would play well in a beer we sought out creative and innovative roasters, then asked them which beans they’re passionate about. Each resulting release of Son of a Baptist is widely different depending on the coffee selected. Some are fruity and sweet with notes of jam and chocolate, others are rich and earthy with a big roasted finish. Each limited release will return to the Roaster’s home market where the beer and the coffee can be sampled side by side.

Dry and malty and hearty. It's a very solid stouty stout. "Look on the bottom of the can to see whose coffee is featured", well the bottom of the can said nothing, but it's a solid chocolate coffee stout nonetheless. In fact I notice a bit more cacao nibs than coffee, but maybe this beer has hit that age where coffee notes start to dissipate. Either way it's a solid beer.

12oz can, purchased from the brewery direct ~$2.00/can
Poured at fridge temp into a tulip glass
Pours abyssal oily black with a thinner tan head
Roasty, sweet, and fresh coffee aroma
Dark black coffee with a tinge of sweetness and some nice accompanying malts.
Very light for 8% and easy drinking - satisfying.
Overall much better than the BA version in my opinion.

Received from @NorsemanOne for NBW BIF #17-
I’ve had the BA version of (a few of many) but never the base stout.
Poured stout black with a tan head which left little lacing.
Aroma lost on my nose. Stupid Covid.
The taste featured primarily roasted malts and coffee, I can’t say I tasted any cacao. Only slightly bitter with the coffee notes.
The code on the bottom, if it’s a zip code, puts the coffee source in Nicaragua.
Tasty coffee stout, but I don’t know if the cacao was useful.
In any case, glad to finally try the base stout.

L: Pours a dark, butty brown that forms a nice khaki head with good lacing and excellent retention
A: Coffee and roasted malts. cacao nib, hint of vanilla
T: Roasted coffee and malts, chocolate, hints of char. Bitter towards finish.
F: Medium-bodied. Light carbonation
O: A very good coffee stout. ABV is solid. Coffee really dominates but the cacao nibs are mixed in strategically

Pours a coal black color with a mohagony, spongy head atop.
Smells of dried coffee, flowery vanilla bean and caramel among rustic bakers chocolate.
Mouthfeel on this is soft, with a pleasant creaminess among a higher, bubbly carbonation, adding a fitting refreshment to the beer.
Tastes of cream covered milk chocolate, together with nutty coffee beans and a sweet and rustic malt backbone, inheriting a roasty quality as well. Offers lighter rock sugar then, together with a smoky, roasty dryness, finding a well dosed toffee backup. Finishes with more whipped cream, whole grain bread and earthy turning coffee among a maintaining, slighty herbal dryness, as well as melting caramel.
A very tasty coffee stout, with a great mouthfeel, versatile coffee flavors and well working balance.

Couple of 12 ounce cans - 1 fridge cold, the other at about 50°, poured into Trooper pint glasses.
Pours thin to medium body, fair foam, no lace, fizz bubbles dance on top for a moment.
Smells like dark roast cold brew coffee and a little cacao nib. The exhale brought some vanilla bean.
Taste is thin coffee stout, nothing more. Not that that’s a bad thing., both the cold one & the warmed shared a very similar palate profile, the warmed one delivered more of a chocolate thang on finish.
Feel is moderate carbonation, a little creamy.
Overall, I get what Epic is going for. It’s a balanced base stout loaded up with various roasters’ wares to accent their individual talents. Beer and coffee. Cool. This 2022 version is/ was good.
