Tart, Juicy, Tart, Juicy

An orange-y hued golden beer with a thick and tight head that lasts to the end. Zesty citrus in the nose along with rind and floral notes. Starts with a big smack of citrus that's tart, bitter and juicy. It literally tastes more like juice than beer. Layers of hop bitterness and coarseness add depth and flavors linger into the delicious finish. Tart 'n Juicy Sour IPA is an amazing mash-up of popular styles. You can taste the IPA, the citrus and the sour and they all sing together in harmony.

As reviewed in BeerAdvocate magazine #113 (June 2016).

there are a couple of things i really like about this, and a couple of things i really dont. on the good side first, its real low alcohol and not expensive. nice to see a beer fill this void in the market, and the flavors are all very good, it comes together nicely, isnt too sour to drink a lot of, and should do really well here in the market. i think there is a need for more beer like this. on the negative side, its another blast through quick lacto tart it up process rather than a sour fermentation or so it seems. the same too clean acidity without the flavor from the wild yeast and bacteria hardly at all, its just pucker. its also not an ipa, decidedly not. sure there might be a nice new world dry hop in this, but its not a hoppy beer in the ipa sense, and it lags heavily in that regard. its also a little overly malty for no apparent reason. i wish they didnt call it that, feels like a marketing ploy. i know epic knows what an ipa is, and this isnt that. the good out weighs the bad though, by quite a long shot. i like the hop flavor i do get, and i think the tartness is on point in terms of how aggressive it is. nicely carbonated, not overly refined. real drinkable new beer from epic, i plan to drink a fair few of these this summer...

12 oz can. Pours hazy golden orange with a medium creamy white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is tart funky sour fruit and stale hops.

The flavor is sweet and tart fruit with some sourness and a bit of a green hop finish. The mouthfeel is light bodied and a bit watery.

Overall, I like the tart fruit and hops. It's watery and I'd like a little more hop and less sweetness.

Copper colored with excellent clarity. There's an inch of off white to tan colored tightly knit foam on top. I smell some tart vinous funky notes along with light malt. I'm tasting the vinous sweet tart sour funk flavor, biscuity malt, and citrus hops. The mouth is moderately carbonated and lightly sticky.

S: has a tart, sour citrus and fruit smell. Malt aromas are low, yeast aromas are medium and citrusy hop aromas are medium.
L: pours brilliant copper amber producing a 2" off-white to cream colored moderately persistent foam cap floating over streams of slowly rising bubbles.

T: starts tart, fruity and citrus with a trace of orange. Malt flavors are medium low and hop flavors are medium to medium high. The tartness is medium, lemony and it tones down the bitterness which is medium to medium low. The tartness is simple and one dimensional.

F: The body is medium to medium light and the carbonation is medium high.

O: Although the tartness lacks in nuance its interactions with the hops and hop bitterness create interest and make for a very pleasant and drinkable beer.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into an IPA glass.

Appearance: Pours a hazy amber orange with a moderate amount of bubbles. About a finger of white head that settles into a thin creamy layer.

Smell: A juicy and tart hop forward aroma with a scent of citrus fruit and lacto yeast. Citrus hop scent of grapefruit, orange peel, mango, tangerine, and lemon. Light hints of pine. Sour and tart scent of lacto yeast. Light malt hints of cracker and grains. A pretty nice aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a tart and juicy hop forward taste with notes of citrus fruit and lacto yeast. Juicy citrus hop notes of grapefruit, mango, orange peel, lemon zest, and tangerine. Some piney hop notes. Sour and tart taste of lacto yeast. Background malt notes of cracker and grains. A solid taste.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, tart, and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid twist on a Session IPA. Nice blend of citrus and sour flavors.

Heavy dark amber color, tart Brett smell, slightly sour taste with a modest feel. Overall, an interesting brew but just not for me (could be tarter and more bitter).

12oz single can - these fuckers cost 30 bucks a sixer right now up here in the Great White North - sheesh.

This beer pours a hazy, medium copper amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, loosely foamy, and well bubbly off-white head, which leaves some random craggy shoreline lace around the glass as it slowly recedes.

It smells of slightly tart lemon and cherry fruit, grainy and crackery pale malt, wet sidewalk chalk, a further tame lactic sourness, and some understated piney, herbal, and grassy green hop bitters. The taste is grainy and sort of doughy pale malt, salted white crackers, an ethereal caramel sweetness, muddled sour yogurt essences, a growing mixed bowl of sassy citrus fruitiness, some mildly sulfurous yeast, and more relatively gentle leafy, weedy, and grassy hoppiness.

The carbonation is quite frothy and sometimes fizzy in its various and alternating manifestations, the body an adequate middleweight, and mostly smooth, just a wee generic sourness taking things down a minor notch. It finishes trending dry, but in the fruity sense of the term.

Overall, a very refreshing and engaging version of the, er, 'style'. Yeah, this one doesn't easily fall into a specific category (sure, IPA - all kinds of adulteration have thus far been tolerated, so why not this, eh?), but after getting my words out here, I started caring less and less about that kind of stuff, and just sat back and truly savoured the rest of this now too-small serving as the May evening sun streams through the basement windows.

Canned batch 3144

Appearance - Pours slightly hazy and golden in color with an off-white, finger width head. Fair retention, then dissipates to a mostly barren surface with an island of suds breaking up the glassy surface.

Smell -Citrus aroma with a touch of cattiness.

Taste - Tart notes of lemon and tangerine upfront with juicy orange character hitting in the finish. Very little citrus pith bitterness in the finish, and what's there is muted by the lingering tartness. Simple, but tasty.

Mouthfeel - Light-bodied with moderate, bitey carbonation. Goes down really well with a crisp, mostly dry finish.

Overall - The name says it all: Tart n' Juicy Sour IPA. Really refreshing brew that works perfectly for a hot day like this.

Epic Brewing Co. "Tart N Juicy Sour IPA"
12 fl. oz. can, production coded but without freshness dating
$2 @ Wegmans, King Of Prussia, PA

Let's see... surprisingly cloudy, looks like grapefruit juice. Smells a little like grapefruit juice, mixed with a little bit of apple juice and some water I think. If the grapefruit is from the hops then it's got hops in the aroma, but if not then there's nothing, which would be odd for an IPA. Of course I'm not getting that much bitterness in the flavor either, so that's not very IPA-like. Of course, it's sour so bitterness isn't needed. It's more than tart, it's sour, but not bracingly so. No more sour than, say, grapefruit juice. And it also tastes like grapefruit juice... maybe with some apple juice and water mixed in. It's just the one flavor really, not very complex, but good, and refreshing. Surprisingly clean as well... nice! Just one more thing, it says on the label that it's kettle soured - two thoughts: 1, wow, they really got a lot of acidity out of it, and 2, geezus I'd hate to have smelled that nastiness cooking for a few days while working, damn, that'd be stank-nasty! Overall, I'd buy this again: makes a great breakfast beer; perfect for a hot afternoon BBQ in August; cuts through the smell of fish guts or horse shit; easy to drink without too much to contemplate.

Also, what's going on here? The can reads "Brewed and packaged by: Epic Brewing Company Denver Colorado" but the site re-directed me to Epic Brewing Company from Utah? Must be multiple locations, right? And not just contract breweries? Wow, that is "epic".
