Poured from fridge temp, but allowed to warm over an hour. Pours jet black with a nice tan head. Nose is surprisingly dominated by rum and coffee for me. Also getting some nice milk chocolate, coconut, whisky, and some raspberry notes. Taste is super smooth. Lots of chocolate milkshake and rum flavors. Coconut and whisky is there as well. Pretty complex, yet balanced. The flavors are definitely coming from lots of different places, and they evolve after the sip. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy, with a nice aftertastes lingering for a while. Overall, a fantastic beer!

Super smooth, with the most delectable raw cacao nibs profile of any beer I've encountered so far. Considerably less coffee-forward than the standard Big Bad Baptist, with the additional barreling and coconut transforming this into a totally different beer. A really damn good one.

Looks like all the other BBB variants: jet black, frothy head, good lacing. Tons of coconut, marshmallow, vanilla, rum, and coffee in the aromas. Flavors also strike a nice balance between rum and whisky character, with lots of fudgy dark chocolate, stone fruit, and sweetness. There is a slight sour note, which is concerning -- potentially a slightly infected bottle (2017 vintage), although I haven't read anywhere of any bottles being infected. Viscous mouthfeel that could be more velvety. Pretty expensive, I'd say Big Bad Baptista is a better variant to buy

Release #7

Appearance: A slow rising bubble show produces a thick beige head that forms atop the jet black liquid; a curtain of lacing descends

Smell: Rich chocolate, caramel, vanilla and coconut with the Rum and Bourbon elements complementing

Taste: Rich chocolate flavors dominate the front end, with caramel sweetness, vanilla and, coconut coming to the fore, in the middle; after the swallow, the Bourbon and Rum interplay, bringing the barrel influence to offset the sweetness; warmth in the finish

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: After a tremendous disappointment with Big Bad Baptista and having been underwhelmed by the base beer, I was ready to give up on Epic imperial stouts; with this beer, they have more them redeemed themselves to my palate

Had this one next to CBS. In comparison, this seemed harsh and not as well-balanced. Still, the coconut definitely comes across on the smell and palate, but the whiskey heat overpowered that one somewhat. Good coffee presence, good mouthfeel, definitely worth picking up if you saw it on the shelves.

I am looking forward to this variation of the Big Bad Baptist. Strong coconut and rum notes left the bottle after I opened it up. Poured into a tulip glass at 52 degrees. A firm but creamy one finger head formed. The head's retention is excellent but leaves no lacing on the glass. The color of the beer is dark brown/black and is opaque.

The aromas in the beer are vanilla, caramel, rum, wood, earthy, coconut, dark chocolate, espresso, dark roasted malts, dark stone fruits, bready, char note, burnt sugars, and molasses.

The flavors in the beer are coconut, whiskey, rum, wood, earthy, dark chocolate, dark roasted coffee, dark roasted malt, char, burnt sugars, vanilla, caramel, dark stone fruits, bready, toastiness, and molasses.

The mouthfeel of the beer is chewy.

The body of the beer is full, medium carbonation, and the finish is lasting.

The flavors in this beer are something of a feat. The few issues I have with the beer is harmony and balance of the beer. The beer does not hide the alcohol well. I enjoy the coconut and the barrel variations of rum and whiskey. For me, the rum is there but not as strong as the whiskey. Recommended beer to drink.

Bottle:
Initial pour has a head grows from the mildly aggressive pour to form a solid brown top. As this falls, the color fades to a lighter tan/beige color. An eventual large-bubbled collar provides landscape lacing early, and a few strips of stickiness on the glass wall later.

The nose is wonderfully replete with coconut . It's forward and the main character, but doesn't dominate; it also thankfully doesn't seem artificial. The coffee, chocolate, and more familiar barrel notes all get a say, but they seem to need their combined weight to balance the coconut. I'd say the rum barrel really leads the way, yielding a slight Malibu rum scent. Chocolate is probably the next most prevalent - perhaps aided by the notes of rum and coconut.

A feel that has a certain thickness to it that seems to manage staying away from being heavy and difficult to get through. There's a little bite here, as the spirit barrels seem to have given up a nice bit of their previous residents.

The barrel aging influence applies equally to the flavor. There a very light berry note more than a specific barrel tang, but the rum (and to a fairly lesser degree whiskey) flavors are not hidden. They are not overpowering, which is a plus for my palate. Light roasted malt gains a chocolatey aspect by mid-taste. The barrels start to come in with vanilla, rum, and coconut. The coffee aspect seems a bit lost in this mix, to me, at least as a distinct note.

Overall, the rum and coconut play well as equal players to a more chocolatey counter-balance. The former comes out on top, and I would expect that to quell my enjoyment, but it's so well done, I am just having fun sipping it.

Pours into a snifter jet black a deep creamy beige head atop that leaves a few broken 'globs' behind as it settles.Vanilla tinged rum and dark fruits really come out at ya in the nose along with deep chocolate notes, not much coconut. The palate shows off the coconut much much more, like a rum/whiskey tinged almond joy with a roasted finish. Not a fan of coconut at all but with all the alcohol and chocolate going on to mingle with the coconut I really like this.A great 2017 ending beer here.

22oz bottle, no date, release #6, 11.4% ABV. Pours black with a small sized dark khaki head. Smells of toasted cocoanut, coffee, and rich cocoa with some vanilla, whiskey, rum, molasses, and earthy hops. The taste follows exactly with cocoanut, coffee, cocoa, roasted malt, vanilla, whiskey, rum, molasses, and hops. It's interesting; the adjuncts really stand out, followed by the base beer then barrel notes. It's complex and mellow but clean. Medium sweetness, bitterness, and dryness. No noticeable alcohol. Average body and carbonation for the style. Overall, the adjunctions shine on this one and the barrel serves more to blend the flavors than to color them. Unique and well done.
