Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much of everything—a real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

Poured from a bomber into a tulip

A. A light amber hazy IPA with a white one finger head that subsides quickly.

S. Sweet malts fill the nose. Almost a candied fruit smell also. Smells like it will be pretty sweet. Smells like dehydrated dates.

T. Though the beer is self proclaimed hopulent. I think I'm getting more sweet caramel malts. I do get some fruity raisin like flavor. Very little bitterness. Finishes pretty clean.

M. Medium mouthfeel. Very little carbonation. I'd really like more suds.

O. I don't think it agrees with the name flavor wise but it is a good flavored beer. Could use some more bitterness. But I can't get passed the mouthfeel on this one. With some more carbonation I would have it rated higher.

A: Pours a cloudy dark golden yellow to orange in color with very light notes of visible carbonation near the surface. The beer has a two finger tall creamy dark beige head that slowly reduces to a very thin film with a large thick patch and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Very significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light amounts of caramel and bready malts upfront in the aroma of this beer but the dominant smell is that of the hops. There is a strong presence of grapefruit/citrus hops with a moderate amount of pine/resin hops and light notes of herbal hops.

T: Like the smell, this beer starts out with the flavors of bready and caramel malts with some light to moderate amounts of sweetness. On top of the malts, there is a significant flavor of grapefruit/citrus hops and a light amount of pine/resin and herbal hops. Moderate amounts of lingering bitterness.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light amounts of dryness and light alcohol heat in the finish.

O: Another good beer from this brewery, I have been impressed with this brewery from Utah's offerings. There is a very nice hop smell and taste but the beer is not overly bitter - fairly easy to drink and the alcohol is mostly hidden.

A very nice balanced IPA.
A bit of citrus meets sticky pine to the nose.
Flavor comes through similarly, with a bit of bready maltiness to balance it out, yey still hoppy overall.
Finish is clean with a piney meets sweet slick follow.
Mouthfeel was very much where I like an IPA, not chewy, but with a bit of heft.

All in all, a very nice IPA.

Picked up a bomber of the Hopulent IPA (good name, surprised no other brewery had yet used that one) at the Central Market on Broadway today. Interestingly, the bottle says 8.8% ABV, but this site has it listed at 8.40%. No big deal, just curious. Maybe a slightly new recipe? Listed as Release # 118.

Poured into a snifter, Hopulent is a pretty golden amber color with a slim one-finger head. Some lace as the beer recedes. NIce looking but nothing special. The nose is quite nice, though, with sweet pine notes and faint citrus and other tropical scents. Funky muted herbal notes in the nose as well. The taste is very sweet, overly malty in my opinion for an IPA. The sweet pine that I smelled drifted away in the taste and it's overwhelmed by malty sweetness. It's okay, but not a great tasting IPA in my opinion. Mouthfeel is full and chewy.

Not my favorite IPA in the world here. I might revisit the brewery, but this is an underwhelming beer. Too sweet. Not crisp enough anywhere. It misses out on the boldness of the American DIPA style but doesn't make up for that anywhere else. Still, I'm glad I tried it.
