Style: American Double / Imperial IPA

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.40%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hopulent IPA is a big beer with lots of complex malt flavor and excessive hops. This beer will have changes to the grain bill and seasonal hop changes. The character of Hopulent IPA is over the top, too much of everything—a real HOP HEADS DELIGHT!

Release # 123. According to their website, this was packed on 4/13/15

Appearance - Pours hazy and orange in color with an off-white, rocky 2 finger width head. Good retention. Good retention, resulting in a thin, consistent layer of surface suds. Lacing is strong, displaying broken sheets and streaks with a few spots here and there.

Smell - Floral hop aroma. Faint caramel.

Taste - Follows the nose. Floral character with a touch of spice and a mild caramel backbone.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with moderate carbonation. Slick, velvety texture makes this a very nice drinker.

Overall - They put a release # on their bottle but not a freshness date? Frustrating. Had I known this was 8 months old I'd have passed, but I'm not about to jump on their website whilst at the store to find out when it was brewed. It's still decent as is, but... grr! I'd love to try it fresh, because I'm sure it's better than what I'm drinking now.

Picked up a bomber of the Hopulent IPA (good name, surprised no other brewery had yet used that one) at the Central Market on Broadway today. Interestingly, the bottle says 8.8% ABV, but this site has it listed at 8.40%. No big deal, just curious. Maybe a slightly new recipe? Listed as Release # 118.

Poured into a snifter, Hopulent is a pretty golden amber color with a slim one-finger head. Some lace as the beer recedes. NIce looking but nothing special. The nose is quite nice, though, with sweet pine notes and faint citrus and other tropical scents. Funky muted herbal notes in the nose as well. The taste is very sweet, overly malty in my opinion for an IPA. The sweet pine that I smelled drifted away in the taste and it's overwhelmed by malty sweetness. It's okay, but not a great tasting IPA in my opinion. Mouthfeel is full and chewy.

Not my favorite IPA in the world here. I might revisit the brewery, but this is an underwhelming beer. Too sweet. Not crisp enough anywhere. It misses out on the boldness of the American DIPA style but doesn't make up for that anywhere else. Still, I'm glad I tried it.

22oz bottle, nice to see some typical Yankee craft beer specialties from this Beehive State brewery arriving all the way up here in Northern Alberta.

This beer pours a hazy, pale golden amber colour, with three fingers of puffy, weakly foamy, and mostly just bubbly off-white head, which leaves some stellar tightly webbed lace around the glass as it lazily sinks from sight.

It smells of crackery, grainy pale malt, a certain white chalky flintiness, muddled, if pleasantly so, domestic and tropical citrus fruit, and further piney, leafy, and somewhat perfumed floral hop bitters. The taste is bready, doughy pale malt, a bit of caramel/toffee sweetness, still mixed and genial citrus fruit rind, a lessened hard water stoniness, and more punchy leafy, piney, and floral hoppiness, with the elevated ABV doing well to mind its own bidness.

The carbonation is light and fluffy in its mostly engaging frothiness, the body a decent medium weight, and generally smooth, these not being the hops you're looking for, apparently. It finishes well off-dry, the bready and grainy, pale and caramelized malts exhibiting the most staying power here.

A more or less pleasant and endearing version of the style, nothing really amiss, and lots of well-rounded flavours abounding, not to mention the hard to really discern, north of 16-proof booze. Worthy of a go, if you find yourself in the northern segment of the Four Corner member states, or I guess, in my case, nowhere fucking (sorry, my good Mormons) near.

Nitro version. Enhanced the feel and finish and overall improved this IIPA which was pretty ordinary.
