A: This poured a clear straw color with quickly dissipating white head.
S: It smelled like strong wild yeast and bitter grassy hops and tart vinegar, with some champagne grapes.
T: It tasted like tart apple vinegar and white grapes, with bitter sauerkraut and wild yeast, and a bit of wheat and candi sugar. It had a clean and crisp lasting tart aftertaste.
M: It was thin and very bubbly, like champagne.
D: This was more tart than expected, but not overly puckering. The apple wasn't very noticeable, but it was still an enjoyable saison. The light body helped soften the bold taste, and made it easier to drink. Not delicious enough for me to seek out again, but worth trying once.

Release #4.

A: A glass consuming firm cotton white head dominates from the start even with a gentle pour, most likely thanks to a wild Belgian yeast strain run amok. A volcanic eruption of effervesce is explosive in the glass while the head took forever to drop before I could continue my pour leaving broken stratified rings down the glass. Pale lemon peel coloring with a slight obstruction of clarity. A second pour produces a monstrous mountainous head that was rocky and still steadfast in its holding, shellacking the glass with a full coating for lace.

S: For aroma I detected light hints of wheat and sour green apples, fairly simple, with musky grains.

T: The flavor was sour green apples dominating right from the start smacking the sour taste buds of the tongue with good results. Powerful with a musky citron character, fruity notes of apricots and red grapes perhaps from the yeast. A slight acidic nature true to style, brass upfront and quite the shocker, but becomes much more smoother and mellower with each concurring sip.

M: tight and bubbly, very active on the tongue even after an extended period of time. Soothing apple sourness, turning gentle by time after the swallow.

O: Overall a solid drinking saison with a sour green apple twist. Crisp, tight and bubbly.

Release #15

A: Pours a cloudy pale straw yellow in color with light to moderate amounts of visible carbonation and some lemon yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall fizzy white head that quickly reduces to a couple of small patches of very thin film and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Upfront there are moderate to strong aromas of spices - ginger, cinnamon, coriander, and anise. After that, the light to moderate aromas of sour apple come through.

T: This beer has a really unusual flavor but one that I enjoyed - it started out with some light flavors of wheat and spices (cinnamon, ginger, coriander, and just a touch of anise stand out. Then there are some lighter flavors of sour apple that come through in the finish. Minimal amounts of bitterness.

M: Light bodied with heavy amounts of carbonation. Moderate amounts of acidic prickliness. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This one is really interesting with the plethora of spices upfront and the sour apple flavors in the finish. Quite refreshing and easy to drink - would be great on a hot summer afternoon.

(22oz bottle). Pours cloudy light yellow-very much like a witbier. Thick white head with some decent lacing. Active carbonation. Aroma has wheat, coriander, clove, cracked pepper and apple. Taste is somewhat sweet with quite a bit of spice typical of a saison. The mouthfeel is thicker than many saisons and the alcohol is noticeable as it warms the throat and chest. Not as much apple as I would have liked, but it is there. A nice, different beer.

A: Pours light blonde and hazy with a very carbonated bubbly white head, reminds me of a soda

S: The apples are definitely there along with the funkiness from the belgium yeast, light grassy smells

T: The mouthful is very carbonated and you get the sourness from the apples upfront followed by the the funkiness.

Overall a good offering from epic, the sourness and the apples are in full effect, everything lines up perfect.

22oz bottle.

Pours hazy gold with a half inch head of white. A partial skim coat on the surface and a few traces of lacing for the duration.

Aromatics lead off with spice-dusted apples and cut grass. Cloves, wet hay and apple cider.

Light bodied with a crisp mouthfeel.

Mulled cider with shades of tart wheat, lemon, and spicy phenols on the palate.

Finishes faintly tart and thin with lingering apple cider and spice.

I like the idea of an apple saison, but this beer needs more of both of those qualities.

Misc.: Release #27 (SLC #1166), which is (according to their website) brewed on July 11, 2013 & the ABV is 7.90 pct.

Poured a golden, straw, hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of foamy, white, rocky head, which dissipated pretty quickly. Tons of bubble streams coming up from the bottom of the glass. Minimal foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.75)

Smelled cinnamon, nutmeg, green apple, cloves, coriander, nectarine peel and Big Red gum. Cinnamon dominates here. I’m intrigued. (Smell - 3.75)

Taste pretty much followed the nose with cinnamon dominating. Also got nutmeg, green apple, green grape, kiwi, cloves, apple pie, coriander, Ginger Ale and grassy notes. Like a winter Saison. (Taste - 3.75)

Light body. Oily-to-thin texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Long, wintry finish. (Feel - 3.75)

This wasn’t a bad Saison. Should almost be called a Cinnamon Saison, but still. Would have it again. (Overall - 3.75)

A: Slightly cloudy, straw colored beer. Not as much head as I would expect, but what there is is off-white.

S: There is an amazing crisp, sourness to the aroma as soon as it comes out of the bottle. When you get closer the predominant aroma is yeast. Also some grains. Not super complex, the yeast and apple overpower.

T: Wow, an interesting blend between a saison and a sour. Punch of sour apple upfront, almost puckering, and then it fades into an earthy yeastiness. There is a biterness to the finish that balances out the sour. The lingering taste on the palette is green apple.

M: Light and crisp, a little sticky in the back of the throat.

O: Not an everyday type of beer, but really interesting. A nice balance of sweet, sour and bitter.

Haven't visited Epic in a while - they kind of came in a flood & are now much harder to find on MN shelves. My wife recommended this 22 oz. bomber, so open it we are.

Pour is unfiltered, hazy yellow - is that right for a saizzzon? Smells like straight up tart apples & spice, like a cold, lovely mulled apple cider after sledding.

Sour Apple Saison is aptly named. Tart green apples in the flush of autumn mix it up with the saizzzon yeast to frankenstein a slick, slightly sour experience. Cute spices invade the mid-palate, lemon zestiness. Touch of must on the back-end, but not enough to mess this up. Really easy to drink.

The apples & saizzzon make very nice nookie, but don't quite make it all the way home. Solid, nice twist, good beer.

22oz brown bomber, no freshness date.

LOOK: Fizzy, very expressive carbonation, hazed yellow hue, good retention

SMELL: Coriander, all-spice, Italian Christmas cookies, green apple taffy, chalky yeast, gummy

TASTE: Very crisp, earthy, tart, estery, grainy, faintly medicinal, coriander, cinnamon, licorice, green apples, yeast, very dry

Very "in your face" type of beer, a Saison can do that on its own but Epic wanted to dial this one up to 11. Spiced to the hilt but not overbearing, tartness resets the palate with each sip and make me want to take another. A fun beer to sip.

Bottle: Poured a hazy dirty light yellow color ale with a big white bubbly head with minimal retention and not much lacing. Aroma of tart apple with some spicy peppery yeast is quite strong. Taste is a very unique mix between some tart apple notes with a strong spicy yeast strain and with some very high carbonation. Body is quite full with strong carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Interesting though not something I would rink everyday. Almost closer to Champagne then beer.

Sampled from a 22oz bottle in a chalice. Purchased at Triangle Wine in Morrisville, NC. Release #6.

A - Light golden with a slight haze and a moderate white head that dissipates quickly.

S - Tropical fruits and sour apple with a touch of honey. Vinous (especially as it warms). The Saison aromas come through despite the strong sour apple.

T - Very sour and tart. Starts nicely but ends a little flat. Too one dimensional with the sour. I think less could have accentuated the Saison flavors without killing everything else off.

M - Silky with a moderate carbonation.

O - Interesting but not one I'd go back to.

This pours a clouded golden color with thin foaming. There's a prominent green apple aroma, and for once it's not by accident. I get a hint of funky esters underneath, with a light hint of peach and wet hay. The flavor is surprisingly tart, perhaps due to the extra time I sat on the bottle, with a drying finish. Overall muddled, but subtract the green apple and I might have more kind things to say.

A: Pours a slightly hazy but bright golden yellow. A large three finger head rises quickly to the top of the glass and disappears almost as quickly. Almost no lacing left behind. Carbonation is clearly evident as it appears more like a champagne in the glass than a beer; bubbles everywhere.

S: Straw and hay up front with a hint of golden apple. The apple is much more subtle than I was hoping for, and it doesn't smell sour, but rather sweet. Earthy and slightly funky and peppery.

T: The apple is certainly there in the taste. Tart, slightly sour, yet slightly sweet apple really makes its presence known right at the beginning of the sip, accompanied by a slightly sweet breadiness and nutmeg. (As it warms, the sour apple and acidity really come through). The taste quickly shifts to a spicy/peppery middle that lasts through the finish. Finishes with pepper and alcohol in the throat, producing a slightly drying effect.

M: Medium bodied and very highly carbonated; a bit too high, in my opinion. Really lively and tingly on the tongue. Slightly sour at the beginning and moderately drying at the finish.

D: This was moderately drinkable, aside from the apparent booze burn at the finish. The alcohol is hidden well until the end, and then it's an unwelcome characteristic that detracts from the flavor and quality. This is an interesting variation on the style that has its ups and downs. I'm hoping that Epic works out the kinks with the next batch; it certainly has the potential of being an decent saison.

Appearance: Pours a clouded, pale yellow body with a moderate-sized, foamy, white head.

Smell: Granny Smith-based apple cider, then, a bit of pils and wheat malt, with hints of ground spices and cobweb-strewn gum as the sour apple scent ramps up.

Taste: Pilsner malts with, perhaps, a trifling bit of wheat. Lightly tangy, lightly sweet upfront. Yes, there are the expected green apples, moderately tart. Also, a myriad of spice hints and a touch of earthy phenolics (bordering on band-aid occasionally) striking the back-of-the-throat. Finishes dry, phenolic, and tart.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium-high carbonation.

Overall: It's interesting and an appealing combination, sure, though I'm not in love with it, and the one visitation is probably enough for me. Still kinda interesting, though!

Poured from a 24oz bomber, into two glasses of the pokal shape, this beer is a beautiful on style hazy yellow.

Smell, straight outta the gate I smell garbage, not knockin it but it took a minute to get my sniffer right. After you get over the garbage smell I do smell sour apples with clove and ginger in the mix as well.

Taste, Is definitely on par for a sour saison, it has the lacto sour and the up front, and mellow saison in the middle with more garbage for the finish.

This is an ok beer and im glad i tried it it cut the heat from my spicy spaghetti and meat balls.

Release #17, bottled on 7/26/12. Poured into an Allagash chalice.

Pours a cloudy pale yellow with a bone-white frothy cap. Fair globs of lace cling to the glass. Sharp scent of spices - coriander, pepper, and a big wallop of apples. This is almost causing my nose to pucker a bit.

Carbonation level is moderate, definitely not as spritzy as many in this style tend to be. Not complaining about that at all. Nice mellow finish. There's enough boldness in flavor to keep this one going. On first sip there's a big smack of herbs and spices. Coriander, lemon pepper, cinnamon, yeast. A lot going on here. But there is a nice puckering tartness to this as well. With my experience as of late, I thought the apple would be downplayed, but it is far from that. Sour green apples, lemons, limes - all make this nice and tart. It's not the most enjoyable or flavorful, but it is sour. As this warms this characteristic develops and opens up even more., but I'm presented with another characteristic I don't care for - nail polish remover. Near the end, this is dang near difficult to finish. I think this one drinks better on the cold side, but that's just me. Interesting beer.

A - pours an apple pie color with a ring of soapy bubbles around the glass.
S - the aroma is a nice cooked apple smell along with some cinnamon. very nice aroma.
T - the taste is a little bit of a let down but not completely. The flavor is mainly the apple but you also pick up the cinnamon along with the saison funkiness. There is some pepper in there and I don't necessarily think it fits with the flavor of the beer.
M/D - The peppery spice does detract from this a bit and makes the drinkability go down a bit. Its medium bodied with crisp carbonation. Enjoyable yet could be tiresome.

slightly hazy golden yellow with nice foamy white head which quickly diminished. smells almost like a pilsner.. very bready, lemon zest, pepper, celery, slight hint of green apple. initial bitterness turns into a slightly tart funk.. almost tastes like chicken with lemon pepper seasoning. grassy herb flavor, faint taste of grapes, cherry, apple.. definitely tasting the belgian yeast. light body with very fizzy carbonation, slight creamyness towards the finish.

overall, this is a solid thirst quencher, though a bit off tasting. i probably wouldn't pick this one up again, though after a month or so seeing it on the shelf, i'm glad i gave it a try.

A: The beer is hazy pale yellow in color. It poured with a thin white head that quickly died down , leaving some lacing on the surface and a thin collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sour apples and spices are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell, except that the spices are a little more prominent initially and the sour apple flavors are most noticeable towards the finish.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer isn't dominated by sour apple flavors, but these help keep the spices from being overpowering. It is an interesting take on the style.

A: Pours an intensely hazy golden color with a thin white head. Leaves some nice tracks of lace.

S: Belgian yeast, a TON of coriander, sage, apple Laffy Taffy and a big, tart wheat aroma. Definitely overspiced for me.

T: Really sweet. The Belgian yeast shows up right away and really takes over. Some faint green apple skin, chardonnay and white grape juice, lemon hard candy and some booze. A touch of ginger on the finish. You can taste every bit of the 8% here and it feels way too heavy for a saison.

Enjoyed at Flanny's in a tulip.

Pale dandelion yellow with very slight haze. One inch of off white froth descends quickly to merengue-like top layer, leaving lots of pocked lace.

The nose: pears and green apple, like a mix of jolly ranchers. Behind: coriander, white pepper, wheat bread, some floral notes. The apple becomes more substantial as it warms.

The flavor: bananas, pears and booze. Tastes kind of like my first attempt at homebrew, which was a Belgian dubbel that ended up irrevocable solvent and banana-laden. Bright with coriander and a nice snap of tartness, followed by lingering fruits. Just a hint of dryness, before lingering artificial green apple notes.

Light, prickly carbonation. The medium-light body holds together well, exhibiting just a bit of fizz. Alcohol fumes come through the nose.

For a saison, Sour Apple Saison is a bit like a cider. It is, however, interesting, with a refreshing green apple snap.

22oz bottle poured into taster

Clear golden straw pour with a bubbly white head, dissipating quickly. A few spots of lacing dot the glass with thin retention.

Crisp green apple and fruit skin in the nose with funky yeast and spice. Citrus peel, zest and soft sweetness.

Tart and refreshing on the tongue with a mix of citrus peel and lemon zest. Coriander and clove with toasted grain and biscuit malts. Funky yeast, cracked pepper, soft spiciness. Finishes with tart apple skins and dry saison yeast.

Lighter medium body, higher carbonation, dry and bubbly on the tongue. The fruit-forward tartness is pretty tasty, especially if you're an apple lover.

Bit of a limp pour, for a saison. Dark gold with a small head.

Smells... pretty good! Phew. I get scared with American saisons. Even excellent brewers routinely fuck these up. The apple nodes dominate, perhaps deftly covering up any imperfections in the yeat profile, but there's still a decent kick of yeast spice near the back end.

Tastes a little better than it smells. Tart apples, spicy yeast. The pallet is simple but well balanced, and it makes for a remarkably sessionable high-ABV beer.

Substantial head on the pour with consistent lacing. Smells of fruit, spice, clove, farmhouse; characteristic Belgian style ale. Spice and clove dominate with subtle sour apple. Finishes champagne dry and tart. Drinkable and light for summer, not a go to for me, though.
