Smoked cherry wood malt brings a smoky sweetness to the caramel malts and a bit of peat flavor with a Belgian-style yeast. The entire batch aging in the whiskey barrels nicely dries out the perceived sweetness of the caramel malt leaving an almost scotch like taste.

ABV varies by batch.

This is Smoked and Oaked #5 (to distinguish from the seven others they have in the series). Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a wide-mouthed wine glass. Pours a hazy amber color with virtually no head. In this glass there's a ring of foam around the edge that stays pretty much the whole way through the glass. This brew has a nice smell- it's fruity and malty with a touch of alcohol and yeast. The taste is a little bit of a letdown for something called smoked and oaked- I taste no smoke. I do taste a hint of bourbon from the barrel-aging along with a little of the fruit that I smelled and a heavy dose of alcohol sweetness. The mouthfeel is very nice however- it is a little syrupy but has more then enough carbonation to remedy that. While this is a pretty decent brew, it's not something I feel was worth the twelve dollars I paid for it.

Pours a hazed orange with a decent lite tan head.

Nose is a pretty standard Belgian strong ale... overly phenolic IMO... tons of clove and quite a bit of band-aid... the phenols go a good way to masking the smoke and the oak... in fact, I get no oak at all... the smoke is more of a bacon aroma.

Flavor is about the same.... sorta acrid bacon with a syrup sweet maltiness... again, the phenols seem stale and medicinal.. tastes like a medicine chest... the sweetness is accentuated by a brutal estery presence... thick apricot and overripe plum.... not digging this one at all.

body and carbonation are both about right... medium...

I need to revisit this one, but I hesitate given the $$$ price tag.

An interesting beer for sure.

Pours a cloudy, almost 'chunky' looking way--looks a bit similar to an apple cider (non alcoholic kind).

Aroma is prett nice - both the oak and smoke come through. Caramelly sweet too. Vanilla.

Taste is what kind of throws me - again, both the oak (taste of whisky barrel) and smokiness are there. I like both of those favors in my beers, but combined, my jury is still out: like they are competing for my affection. How does one choose a favorite child? alcohol is quite present too, which seems to go well with the aforementioned whisky oak.

A lot going on in this brew. Worth a try, for sure. Curious to see where YOUR jury nets out!

I had Smoked & Oaked batch #3, which was 10.5% rather than 8%. It was a tasty Belgian dark ale with strong flavours from the whiskey barrel it was aged in.

A: Brown amber colour and a 3 mm head that lasts ok. 4

S: Smells like butter and smoke. 4

T: Malty with clean, buttery flavour. Noticeable whiskey aftertaste. Yum. 4

M: Thick and foamy. 4

Perhaps this would reach pure perfection if it were also yolked...? Either way, it pours a mostly clear magenta-ruby topped by a finger of light tan foam. The nose comprises caramel, candi sugar, banana, clove, light Band-Aid, and a small wave of honey-glazed ham after a little bit o' time sniffing at things. The taste holds notes of caramel, clove, black pepper, banana peel, vanilla, orange peel, honey, and a sort of bitter Band-Aid. The smoke isn't exactly pervasive, and never really achieves any kind of smokiness, just elastic strips that are used to stem the tide of blood flowing from breaks in the skin. All I know is that it doesn't taste very pleasant. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a lightly syrupy feel. Overall, an okay beer, but the smoke (if you can call it that) doesn't help anything, and the oak does very little, if anything. Not really a fan, here...just disappointed...

A- dark amber and cloudy. Very little head.

S-sweet hints of bourbon? It smells malty with bread aroma.

T- the first sip is complex, but the smoke flavor is evident in the end of the end.

M- on first sip I can taste the alcohol. There us a heaviness but I think it comes from the abundance of flavors.

O- I wish I was eating bbq right now! This is a pretty good here but would be great with some food. I think I could go through a couple of these on there own, but would have to deity it up eventually.

A. Pours a hazy brown with some red and a nice somewhat creamy off white head.

S. A touch of smokiness that comes through more as it warms. A touch of bourbon with some cherry.

T. Very similar to the nose. Smoke, cherry, and some bourbon.

M. medium body with decent carbonation.

D. The best utah beer I've had.

Pours a hazy orange with nice white head. Looks okay. Nothing special
Smells lightly smoky with some oakiness. Actually smells pretty solid.
Tastes smokey and sweet. Light, bourbony vanilla. Smooth, rich, a very interesting flavour profile. Overall surprising.
Good solid mouthfeel, overall surprisingly good.

A - Pours deep, opaque amber with a creamy off white head that quickly subsides.

S - Smokey, hint of cherries, orange peel.

T - Cherry smoke comes through in the forefront with caramel, toffee sweetness. Vanilla and woodsy notes make a substantial appearance. Very complex.

M - Fervent carbonation. Very agressive, nicely complements the sweetness.

O - Great beer. Very well balanced. Well worth the money.

Nice rustic looking completely opaque deep amber colored, almost milky with a thick dense light tan head that quickly fades into a tiny topper.

Fantastic aromas waft from my tulip. Cherry wood is very evident and effervescent. Light vanilla, oak, toffee, aromas, with some meaty aromas as well. Bacon, lavendar, other floral notes, hints of clove, and more complex and wonderful.

Again, delicious. Very balanced, nothing overpowering. Smokey and again evident cherry wood blends perfectly with sweet vanilla oak, chocolate, toffee, and burnt caramel, belgian yeast flavors, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, cherry, pommegranate, blueberry, and more. Mouth could be a little more creamy but otherwise top notch. Great beer.

Canal's in West Depford supplied the growler, Release 3.
The pour was a rich muddy copper-brown.
The nose was expressive, oak-filled and slightly smoky.
Mouthfeel was flavorful and deep. It reminded me of a cross between Kasteel Brune meeting Unibroue Raftman. Overall, this is worth driving 25 miles for the growler fill. Epic made a fine brew.

A: This poured a cloudy dark copper with almost no head.
S: It smelled like banana nut bread and smoked malt, with a little caramel and ham.
T: It tasted like ham and banana nut bread, with some smokey barley and metallic hops. It had a bittersweet and smokey aftertaste that was a bit harsh.
M: It was somewhat thick with moderate carbonation. Nice body.
D: This was a pretty nice beer. The scent and taste were good, like half dubbel and half rauchbier. The body was good too, and the alcohol was well hidden, so it was pretty easy to drink. Not sure if it will improve with age. It's nice fresh, but enjoyable mostly just as a one time novelty.

I got this bottle from the brewery as soon as they released batch number one. Batch one was brewed in late April of 2010. This bottle has aged since then. Poured into a pair of goblets.

Appearance: A rich mahogany with red edges. The beer had a long lasting one finger head that left a bit of lacing. The only detractor was the yeast that settled on the bottom of the goblet, but this was not unexpected.

Smell: This is where the barrel aging really adds a lot. These are aged in whiskey barrels, but the whiskey flavor are not dominant. The oak wood really stands out. The caramel from the malts is also noted. A hint of fruity Belgian yeastiness peaks out around the edges. Maybe it is the additional aging, but the smokiness seems to have been tamed a bit.

Taste: The nose is so strong and dominant that they taste will simply follow. Again, oaky woodiness, but not whiskey per se. I bit of smoke more in the form of peat in a Scotch rather than campfire smoke. Very complex and layered. This may have never had much booziness at 8.0 ABV, but it was perfectly in line with the rest of the flavors.

Mouthfeel: Solid carbonation, even after 16 months, along with a dense body. A long finis from such intense flavors.

Overall: An interesting beer. I liked it a lot, except that it is about 12 per bomber so I cannot afford to buy this one very often.

Pours an opaque dark mohogany/chestnut brown color with dark ruby edges.  Thin half finger off white head that immediately fades.  Minimal lace.  

Earthy oak aroma with smokey malt notes underneath.  Hints of charcoal, bacon, BBQ  and butane along with caramel sweetness and toasted oak.  The barrel aging tones down smoke but adds complexity to the nose.  

Medium bodied with a really nice balance of earthy, toasted oak, burnt wood and vanilla along with smoked malt notes.  Hints of charcoal, campfire, bacon and caramel sweetness.  Sweetness and oak balance out extreme smoked notes very well.  Good amount of alcohol heat in the finish.  Well balanced and pretty tasty.

Pours a copper amber color. A layer of beige head with a little bit of lace left.

Aroma: Smoke and some roasted malts. Liquid bacon. A hint of whiskey and some oak. Light spice.

Taste: Much like the nose, but more bacon flavors. The whiskey adds a nice layer. Fairly oaky. Campfire smoke. Where are the Belgian flavors?

Mouthfeel: Smoked and dry. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends with more smoked flavors.

Overall, this was a decent beer, but I would have never guessed this to be a Belgian. It reminds me more of a German rauchbier. Decent stuff.

Appearance is nice, ruby amber body with gigantic 3-finger foamy, creamy ecru-white head (from a relatively mild pour) that retains like a champ and laces liberally.

Nose is interesting, faint citrus, with some smoky bacon and the faintest of hops.

Taste is nice, sweet and smoky, apple and some dark grape flavor, vinuous, even.

Mouthfeel is also nice, creamy and complementary to the taste.

Overall fantastic; different than a standard rauchbier but in a refreshingly original way.

The pour is a dark straw almost amber with a short head that dissipates quickly leaving slight lacing. The smell is smoky with an apricot sweetness. The feel is slightly syrupy, smooth, and with light carbonation. The taste is sweet with some tart and citrus, and a light hop finish, some smokiness is in the aftertaste but not as much as expected.
Overall good drinkability for the alcohol level and a rather mellow flavor that doesn't overpower.

Poured from a 22 oz into a pint glass

Appearance: Dark red/amber with a tight beige head and lots of CO2. Minimal lacing, though head retention is good.

Smell: Smoked salmon and subtle grapes

Flavor: Smokey-sweet. Starts with a sweet grape juice (almost vinous) flavor then taken over by strong smoke. Along with vanilla and light fruits, there is another sort of flavor, I think it is what Epic calls 'peat.'

MF: Light like a belgian, but with substantial flavor and minimal yeastiness. Easy to drink but the smoke might be too strong for multiples of this beer.

Epic brewing just came to D.C. a couple of months ago, holding an event at De Vinos, missed the event, but grabbed this bottle in place. I was pleasantly surprised. Full bodied with a forward taste of dark fruits and a trace of the "oak" - very pleasant. On the back end, you get hit with the "smoked" aspect of the beer. It's somewhat subtle, but those crispy burnt notes really make for a great close. It seems like there are Epic bottles everywhere, and I look forward to picking up another.
