Style: American Porter

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.20%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
This nostalgic porter evokes memories of chocolate and coffee around a campfire. The cherry wood smoked malt used in this beer gives it a heavy smokiness that blends smoothly into the chocolate malty body. With a silky finish this porter is ideal for sipping on a cold winters eve.

Not bad, but not great. There are plenty of better beers with more smokiness or more complexity to their smokey elements. This beer simply has a respectable porter base, and accents it with moderate, inoffensive smoke.

Pours a cola brown color. The head is a finger high and mocha in shade. It has an extremely soft, frothy texture that retains nicely. Webs of lacing stick to the glass.

The smoke (at least judging from the aroma) doesn't have that textbook bacon quality - no, it instead invokes more of a woodsy, tobacco-like vibe. There are also touches of cola, chocolate, caramel, brown sugar, and espresso; the smoke dominates, however. Some more dimensions and definition would be appreciated here.

Just like the nose dictated, the flavors are very forward in their smokiness. Though a mild touch of brown sugar opens it up, it continues and ends with plenty of woodsy smoke - this has that "dry campfire" flavor I appreciate. Many of the great smoked brews reveal more layers of the base beer as more is consumed, but this really doesn't. The porter underneath is quite timid and lacking in flavor, and that ends up being the biggest quibble. It's just a bit too one-note.

This is extremely thin in body, even for 5.3%. When combined with how dry the finish is, this goes down with amazing ease. Still, the sheer dinkiness offered is upsetting. Low carbonation plays second fiddle to the parching smoke.

This one does a few things right. I love the smoke flavor going on here, plus it's exceptionally easygoing. But the porter part doesn't really measure up - the whole thing seems watered down. I probably won't seek this out again, especially in bomber format.

3.14/5: Good smoke, it just needs to be bigger in all other aspects

Release # 30, bottling date of 05/21/14 according to their website

Appearance - Pours cola brown with a thin, khaki colored head. Fair retention, but leaves a sturdy level of suds across the surface. Lacing is minimal, with a few spots left here and there around the glass.

Smell - Smoke, chocolate and lightly roasted malt. Faint 'cola-like' caramel.

Taste - Mild flavor, with charred smokiness being the predominant character. Lesser notes of chocolate and faint roasted malt. There's a fair amount of sweetness, with a bit of caramel cola character found in the mix. Finishes smokey and slightly sweet.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-full body with moderate carbonation. Slightly chalky texture with a mostly dry finish.

Overall - Seems to have aged well, but not quite as deep or roasty as I would have wanted, as the sweetness seems a bit overabundant. Maybe I've been spoiled by Mad River's Scotch Porter, but this doesn't strike me as a brew I'd seek out again.

A 22oz bomber from release batch #33 with a brew date of 2nd March 2015 and a packaged date of 16th March 2015 and poured into a Spiegelau stout glass.

Appearance: It poured a deep dark brown with amber hues and a nice one fingered tan head that dissipated to a thin creamy layer and leaves spotty lacing.

Aroma: The smoke aromas were light but instead mainly chocolate, some dark fruits and hints of coffee.

Taste: Felt more smoke in the taste than the aromas, but still on the light side. On top of the smoke though, there is chocolate with hints of toffee, plum and raisin as well as some nice light bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, creamy, medium bodied and light to medium carbonation.

Overall: I enjoyed this but the smokiness in both the aroma and taste was less than I expected. Despite this, I would probably still buy this again.

A: Brilliant deep chestnut under a 1” clingy light tan foam cap that graps the side of the glass etchint it with sheets of lace marking each drink.
S: Smoke and malt with traces of coffee and chocolate.
T: This is a malt driven beer with dark malt, dark dried fruit, coffee and hints of chocolate wrapped in smoke. The smoke is not aggressive but lingers pleasantly into the aftertaste. The bitterness on the finish tastes more like dark roast malt than hops.
F: Big luscious body, slightly below average carbonation.
O: Well balanced smoked porter.
