Release #21, opened on 04/12/2016 making this 20 months old. "store aged"

A hard pour looks like black motor oil and yields an awesome 3 finger dark brown head made up of ultra-compact bubbles.

Aroma of chocolate sauce, roasted nuts, a touch of spice like anise, and a whiff of light sherry.

Intense flavors of dark near-melted chocolate, nice and smooth roasted barley, dark berry fudge, and a hint of sherry. With the age I would expect this type of profile: Absent is any harshness, coffee bitterness or acrid flavors, and the sherry is almost surely due to age. I like imperial stouts fresh and lightly aged, and appreciate the differences.

Conclusion: Very nice. A simply massive stout which has aged very nicely. I bet it is pretty nice fresh as well. 15 years ago this would have been famous. Now it is just another fantastic heavy-hitting ultra-dark stout among many others. I will surely drink this again especially with the sub-$10 price point.

This is what an Imperial Stout should be! Deep, dark and complex it's delicious yet smooth and 10%. Strong coffee overtones with chocolate syrup, molasses, sorghum, marshmallow, Graham Cracker, light anise, malt and even a bit of sherry. Love this!

Color: charcoal black in color. Appeared thick and viscious while pouring. Minimal head that is brown when present for a short time.

Smell: mostily coffee. Maybe a little bit of coaco but it's dominantly coffee.

Taste: very sweet and viscous in the mouth. Coffee, chocolate, and some dried dark fruits. It also has a bit of spiciness to it, but it doesn't seem like its coming from the alcohol. Almost like Mexican chocolate minus the cinnamon.

Mouthfeel: full-bodied with a spiciness character at the finish that lingers around for a little bit.

Overall: a decent stout from Epic. Just a step down from the Big Bad Baptist. Not sure if its the same base beer but I enjoyed it.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Karl Strauss 26th anniversary snifter glass
From: Utah State Liquor Store #06 in Logan, Utah
Price: $8.35
Purchased: May 2, 2015
Consumed: May 19, 2015
Misc.: Release #23 - Brewed on Oct. 23, 2014; Packaged Nov. 6, 2014; Brewed in Denver; 10.9 pct. ABV

Poured a black color with two fingers of frothy tan head, which thinned out quickly. Good uneven layered lacing with some spottiness along the sides of the glass. Very good retention. (Sight - 4.00)

Smelled chocolate, roasty malts, toasty nuts, caramel, dark chocolate syrup, smoky cocoa spices, faint coffee malts and sweet toffee. (Smell - 3.75)

Tasted similar to the nose, but slightly better. Got chocolate syrup, rich roasty malts, dark cocoa, toasty nuts, caramel, toffee, rich coffee malts, smokiness and fudge. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, bitter, slightly warming finish. (Feel - 4.00)

This beer really grew on me. I may have underrated it a tad, but either way this was a tasty double imperial stout. (Overall - 4.00)
