Epic Brewing Company - Big Bad Baptist [Batch # 56]. 11.9% ABV. 22oz Bomber split between two snifters.

Look: Pours and settles a viscous pitch black, and retaining a half finger of mocha colored head.

Smell: Most prominent aroma is raw whiskey, with some under powered aromas of cocoa, coffee, dark malts, dark fruits (raspberries and grapes), and charred oak.

Feel: Thick, chewy, heavy, creamy, full bodied.

Taste: Very strong whiskey up front, with some sweet cocoa, bitter coffee, some dark malts, and the dark fruit protruding about halfway through. Very bold boozy aspect, with none of the other flavors really making a significant impact on the palate. Gets better as it warms up.

Overall: This is one big beer, and would be hard to handle by yourself. Very strong boozy whiskey in this batch, a little too much it seems; a lot of the other flavors are drowned out by it. I was expecting a whole lot more from this, but maybe this batch wasn't as good as the others.

Epic Brewing Company - Big Bad Baptist [Batch # 71]. 12.8% ABV. 22oz bomber poured into a tulip glass.

Look: Usual pitch black body, with a porous dark tan head. One finger in size, but ends as thick lacing.

Smell: Very roasty with lots of coffee, sweet cocoa, with a slight vegital and boozy backing aroma.

Feel: Thick and full bodied with mild carbonation. Slightly chewy.

Taste: Roast coffee, with some mild bitterness, incorporated with chocolate, barrel, char, and slight alcohol.

Overall: A great Christmas present! A bit different from Release 56 I had previously reviewed. This was not as completely overpowered by roast and whiskey like it, however the coffee in this was more vegital and raw. Numbers were pretty much identical, and averaged out the same.

Amazing brew. A fantastic mix of chocolate, oak, subtle coffee, and a touch of smoke. Surprisingly drinkable for such a high ABV. Would absolutely look for this one again. Probably the best BBA imperial stout that's readily available. Highly recommended.

First off, when a brewery constantly tweaks recipes... I'm probably gonna be a fan!

So, Epic brewing's finally made it to my northern, frostbitten area of Canada! $21 Canadian per bomber of their batch #50 using coffee from Blue Copper coffee shop in Kansas City at 12.6%. Pours a (not completely pitch) black colour with a thick creamy finger of mocha brown head. Looks super promising!

Predominantly a high-end coffee start, goes into a dark chocolate and bourbon vanilla-ey taste then a milk chocolate middle with some dried dark fruit flavours like a prune and raisin and a still smokey vanilla aura through out. Ends with a strong coffee/hop bitterness. Absolutely beautiful.

Personally I love huge coffee stouts and pick em up whenever a new one comes available, but I usually get way too much coffee. This beer (after 3 1/2 months) balances damn-near perfectly, but still lets you know its a coffee bomb. Best coffee beer I've had thus far and makes me one happy (but cold) Mennonite! Highly recommended!

A little heavy on the coffee notes but overall a great beer.
