Poured from a 22 oz. capped bottle (Release #1) into a snifter glass.

A vigorous pour yields a 1 1/2-finger tan-colored head that fades over the course of a couple minutes to a thick, clumpy dusting and thick foam ring. The body is a nice near black with no traces of color when held to light. Some decent lacing can be seen throughout consumption.

A subdued whiskey (almost like well liquor) aroma is the first and strongest character of the nose. Some baker's chocolate and roasted coffee beans aromas are also there but take a little digging to find.

Dark and bittersweet chocolate, freshly roasted coffee beans, concentrated espresso, and just a touch of dark fruit (black cherry?) all hit the tongue at first sip. As the beer is swallowed, dark and milk chocolate flavors really come out along with more espresso. Just a hint of bourbon-like alcohol warmth is noticed in the back of the throat. A nice black coffee aftertaste settles in between sips.

Medium to full bodied with moderate carbonation, this beer isn't as creamy as it is silky. The body is a bit on the light side for an 11.7% ABV Imperial Stout, which helps to keep this beer from becoming overly sticky and syrupy (which it is neither). The carbonation is almost unnoticeable but is definitely doing a fantastic job in the background. This beer really slides over the tongue smoothly while coating it completely.

A- pours a solid black color with a finger and a half of creamy beige colored head. Good retention no lacing.

S- huge one two bunch of roasty malt and espresso roast oily coffee beans. The middle is cocoa nibs and rich gourmet dark chocolate. Soft oak tones on the finish with a touch of whiskey.

T- huge dark roast French press coffee(just had some this morning) permeates this brew with layers of oily coffee bean and double shot espresso. The cocoa nibs come out in the middle with a bit of dark chocolate as well. Some roasty malt blends in as well with a slight char. Soft oak and a touch of burnt caramel hit the palate on the finish with a whisper of whiskey and alcohol warmth.

MF- oily coffee like mouthfeel with a medium body and low carbonation.

D- good drinkability

Overall the coffee dominates the brew with other flavors coming in softer and subtle. Pretty tasty if you like coffee.

Served On Tap at Fireworks in Courthouse/ Arlington VA

A: Dark Midnight Black Ink.
S: Dark milk chocolate, light smoke, malt and cherries
T: Dark milk chocolate, french press Colombian coffee, Dark cherries, bready malt, raspberry tart. Quite tasty, the creamy bourbon barrel comes on last i n the taste profile but the subtle hear comes in the third layer behind the chocolate, and coffee.
M: Light carbonation that tingles the back part of my throat. Milk and smooth. Like melted milk chocolate.
O: This is one amazing stout! I had some doubts but this one now is number 3 all time! Gonna go back for some more soon and get me a couple of overpriced bottles to stock up on!

A: pitch black with a dark brown head. retention really is not very impressive. neither is the lacing.

S: coffee all up in your face. and chocolate. man this is inviting. a little bit of bitterness with dark burnt grain.

T: similar to the nose, a rich french roast starts the palate off. vanilla beans. dark chocolate. burnt grains. this thing is complex with new flavors coming across each sip. the flavor lingers with coffee and chocolate. bitter. absolutely fantastic.

M: mild carbonation. definitely a full body.

D: man this is good. the flavor as well as the nose is everything i want in a coffee stout. really impressed and well worth the search.

Heard good things. Batch #2, just released I believe.

Dark brown to black pour. Some clarity in the light. Small coffee colored head.

Picking up a lot of coffee in the nose. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, but mostly dominated by coffee.

Taste had even more coffee. It was very bold and robust. Chocolate underneath. Bitter with a medium sweetness for an imperial stout. I had a little trouble picking up the whiskey barrel. At times, I tasted some vanilla, oak, and maybe some honey but it wasn't very forward at all so I wasn't sure if I was just imagining it. Mouthfeel was thinner than I'd like.

This was a nice surprise from Epic and definitely worth a try. Excellent price too. I hope they get some more character from the barrel for the next batch. This coud be a good substitute for Bourbon County Coffee.

22oz bottle - "Release #2"

served in a large snifter

A - pours with a thin film of light tan foam, settling to some random wet lacing around the glass and a few floating bubbles. the beer is not quite black, but deep, dark brown when held up to light.

S - dominating is some rich, bold french roast coffee, charred oak, and deep roasted malts. warming brings in some darker milk chocolate, tannic oak, and a hit of bourbon.

T - taste follows suit from the smell, with rich coffee being in the forefront...slightly bitter, roasty, quite nice if you enjoy your coffee that way (i do!). balancing sweetness of chocolate, roasted malts, and vanilla. a bit on the hoppy side, adds another layer, this one is probably best fresh. very nice.

M - medium, slightly creamy body with a touch of lingering sweetness. moderate carbonation lifts the flavors a bit, providing a vehicle for the massive coffee and malty roastiness to settle.

O - unsure about this one for the first few sips but it really grew one me. love the bold, coffee-forward taste. making for a wonderful sipper on a cold snowy night. my first epic beer, this one is really well done.

Poured into an Arrogant Bastard pint glass. Dark black but not all light sucking. Edges reveal just the slightest bit of light. Head rises quickly and is a bit lighter than coco color and is creamy smooth while it lasts. Head dissipates just as quickly as it showed up.

Smell is charred and burnt malts. Lots of dark roasted coffee, some vanilla and oak. Just a hint of bourbon. Quite nice.

Taste is fantastic. Just like the smell it is loaded with dark roasted coffee. There is some sweet vanilla bean and charred oak barrel. The alcohol at %11.3 is disguised very well.

Mouth isn't as thick and chewy as I would expect for an Imperial Stout, but is still quite good. It has medium carbonation and a long wet finish.

Overall, I really liked this a lot. This is so under the radar of "Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts out there. It wasn't very cheap and maybe that's a down fall but this was truly wonderful beer. Thanks to Sylvia for getting the last two cases this states going to see.

Release #1.

Pours a viscous liquid that is deep black color. Half inch of head forms and settles quickly to a thin cap. Moderate amount of spotty lacing is left down the glass.

Aromas begin with mainly fresh black coffee, lots of darkly roasted espresso beans. This does not change much even as the beer gets close to room temperature. Subtle complementary notes of roasted malt, dark bitter chocolate and the faintest trace of whiskey.

The tastes follow the nose with a straightforward coffee flavor, overtaking all the complementary base beer flavors. A little bit of roasted, burnt bitterness from the malt. Slight hint of dark chocolate. The barrel aging did not impart much flavor, definitely would have liked a lot more and I am not a fan of overly barrel heavy beers, but this needs more. Alcohol is well hidden. Just slightly warming in the finish. Quite unbalanced with the heavy coffee flavor.

Mouthfeel is medium to full bodied and close to perfect carbonation. Finish is dry and mildly bitter from the abundant coffee additions.

Overall, the flavors were way too dominated by one element; the coffee. Little to no barrel flavors, bitter roasty coffee overshaddows everything else here. It is not bad by any means, flavor-wise, but I can go get a cup of Joe for a buck at the convenience store. A coffee bomb of a beer indeed, so if that's your thing, not for me though, and I love coffee.

S: lots of robust coffee and dark chocolat with oak, vanilla, and bourbon. Simple, but good.

T: similar to the aroma, lots of coffee and dark chocolate. There are some creamy vanilla, chocolate, and bourbon as well, but they're relatively subtle.

M: thick body with lowish carbonation, this beer is nice and creamy.

O: a very good beer overall. Delicious without being overly boozy or strong.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a snifter.

Opaque brown-tinged black with a 1/4" mocha head. Head recedes to a thin ring but comes back nicely with a swirl. Leaves some spotty lacing.

Initially the smell is dominated by a nice rich coffee bean scent. As it warms some bittersweet chocolate and whiskey barrel comes through. So pretty much just the adjuncts and barrel in the scent, still nice and rich even if it isn't too complex.

Rich coffee comes out first in the taste too, followed by whiskey barrel and a nice overbaked chocolate chip cookie note. It then fades nicely into some roasted/charred malt, milk chocolate, and somewhat sharp whiskey barrel, the different tastes blending well. More chocolate comes out as it warms. Finishes fairly bitter with some acidic coffee and slightly astringent oak (and hops possibly). Has a medium sweetness balanced by the whiskey and oak. The astringency lingers too long for me, particularly as it gets warmer.

The texture comes on medium bodied and syrupy but ends a little thin. It contributes unpleasantly to the astringency in the end.

Overall I enjoyed it, fairly complex with the notes blending well. Grading to style, it didn't hold up to other imperial stouts I liked more, but still very good. I think the adjuncts and (to a lesser extent) the whiskey barrel overpowered the base beer a little, and I didn't really like the astringent finish, but fairly rich and nicely balanced.

Poured from a bomber into a Town Hall Sniffer.

A. Pours a deep dark black, mild mocha head about 1 finger thick.

S. Extremely heavy coffee. Almost like fresh coffee beans. That is really the only smell coming off of this beer. Extremely strong.

T. This beer tastes of of pure coffee beans, after they have been used to make five batches. Strong toffee, bitter, lots of coffee. It really is overbearing.

M. Coarse, thick bodied. Slightly dry finish.

O. I did not like this beer at all. It is overbearing wet coffee grounds through and through. It is just too much. This is one of the two beers I have ever poured out. I would not suggest this beer to anyone.

22oz bottle poured into snifter

Pours a viscous black color with a small, yet fluffy browned head. Patchy lacing on the glass with some filmy retention resting on top of the brew.

A smack of coffee in the nose with some nutty tones. Bourbon and oak sweeps this away without becoming too hot. Rich chocolate and coffee bean notes swell into the profile.

Coffee and chocolate kick off the flavor, which is fairly rich yet balanced. Somewhat sweet, but tempered by oak and bourbon warmth. Vanilla is present throughout with some molasses and roasted dark malts. More coffee and booze towards the finish.

Fuller body, decent carbonation, silky and creamy on the tongue. This is one of those beers that makes me think, "Why am I trading when this is sitting on the shelf?" Definitely a really nice barrel aged beer that I'd like to have more of.

Release 2, poured into a Bruery tulip. This release was brewed with coffee and cocoa nibs and hopped with nugget, chinook and cascade.

Black and thick as ink, topped with half a finger of cinnamon-colored head composed of big, wet bubbles that pop away quickly, leaving a medium-sized ring.

Coffee! Great handfuls of heavily roasted beans in the nose, balanced by sweet dark chocolate hints of vanilla an oak, and the lightest touch of bourbon.

The flavor’s equally coffee-laden, but there’s a little more bourbon and oak here. Big Dark chocolate flavor as well. Basically, everything from the nose, but more intense. Fantastic.

Silky medium body, like hot chocolate. Light, massaging carbonation; mild bitterness; just a hint of boozy heat in the nose.

A surprising delight. Big Bad Baptist displays huge coffee stout flavors with a masterful touch of bourbon. Very, very good.

Got to try this at Choice City Butcher in Fort Collins. A remarkable beer. It pours black/brown with slight copper tinge and minimal (brown/red) head. The most impressive feature is the cocoa-nibs. In fact, I was told by bartender that he's seen chunks of cocoa-nib floating in this beer (...didn't get to witness that myself).
The taste is a cocoa/coffee mixture, tilted toward the former.
Medium-to-heavy body. No alcohol burn, but it is robust .... Take your time because it warms nicely.

A: Pours a jet black with some brown hued edges and nice khaki head that has some nice retention.

S: Solid coffee bean dominates the nose upfront with a touch of roasted malt and a subtle whiskey backend.

T: Again this is coffee forward, but the whiskey barrel is integrated very nicely. The vanilla and caramel flavors blend nicely with the chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Tastes like a sweeter version of an Irish coffee. No heat, but the alcohol is noticeable.

M: A tad thin in the body with ample carbonation. I would have liked a little thicker mouthfeel. Coffee lingers on palate long after the sip is complete.

O: I though Grand Teton's Wake Up Call was the most coffee forward until his came along. The barrel is well integrated and sort of lingers in the background to let the coffee and roasty qualities really shine.

A: Pure jet black, with a very thin head that disappears in a flash.
S: Very, very strong coffee/espresso. I'm not picking up much else the coffee is so strong, but it smells like a mighty nice cup of java.
T: Tons of coffee again, along with a bit of caramel and a slight hops kick at the end. You almost question if at the end of a 11.7% bottle that tastes like this whether you'll be feeling more alcohol or caffeine. A bit one-dimensional, but I like coffee so this tastes mighty fine, and the alcohol is well hidden. Bitter coffee finish.
M: Full-bodied and rich.
O: I honestly could confuse this with a cold Irish espresso. If you don't like coffee I wouldn't recommend this, but I certainly enjoy it.

This gets my nomination for beer name of the year. When I read about this release, I giggled & had to have one. Luckily it showed up locally. 22 oz. bottle split into two Darkness glasses. Release #1.

Pour is black. Nose catapults out of the bottle whilst the beer is mixing with the air with a blast of coffee, coffee, & maybe a little roast.

Big Bad Baptist should be the brew of choice for Mitt's coming campaign. This beer could keep people up a night, there are at least sixteen shots of espresso topping off whatever beer is present. There are also a few layers that come with a distinctiveness that's startling. Under the coffee there's vanilla/bourbon, then to a lesser degree, sweet malts. Roast is mixed in somewhere, indistinguishable from the coffee except for the char shadowing the aftertaste. But ultimately this is a coffee game that goes genocide on everything else, limiting its upside.

This is a big improvement on the Epic Imperial Stout, but I wish the entire ton of coffee didn't fall into the mash tun. Oh well. Ultimately, a good beer that could use a lighter spin in the coffee washer.

Pours black as night with an oily, deep brown head. Aromas of charred roasted malts, dark fruits, and alcohol. In the taste, coffee, charcoal, mild sweetness and small hop presence. Bitter almost acrid malt flavor, some barrel presence, providing a nice bite the the beer. Clean alcohol flavors are hidden underneath a strong coffee presence. Full bodied, thick feel. Overall, a beast of a beer, but one thats worth fighting.

Black as night, mocha head. Sits still with a brown ring on the the glass. Chocolate and coffee dominate the aroma, with an underlying vanilla and wood note. Toasted notes and some dark fruits. Cocoa leads the taste. Some bittersweet coffee follows, toasted and roasted notes, some sweetness and dark fruitiness. Back end vanilla and toasted oak round it out with some accompanying whiskey notes. The feel is full, and somewhat coating. The alcohol can get a bit heavy, so this makes a good closer.

Overall, a wonderful stout. -bal stouts are hit or miss with me, but this is a hit.

As a coffee addict, this beer had me sold just by the smell. A strong whiff of espresso, cocoa, alcohol, and vanilla. Color was deep black with no light escaping.

Bold taste of espresso, cocoa, and alcohol/malt, but not sharp at all. Quite mellow, balanced, and easy to drink...slowly. Slight hint of oak and vanilla in the back.

If you like coffee, this is a fantastic beer for you.

22 ounce bottle, Batch #2, Brewed on June 10, 2011, Packaged November 28, 2011 (says that on Epic's website). Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that stayed around for a little while. There's also a decent amount of lacing. Aroma is strong and roasty, the brew smells mostly like coffee, along with some roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, and a little bit of whiskey. Taste is mostly like the aroma, there's roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, whiskey, oak and burnt/charred malt flavors all noticeable. The coffee flavor is dominant, but there's more sweetness that comes out as the brew continues to warm up. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and creamy with good carbonation. I think this is a pretty good brew, if you're a fan of coffee beers then this one is for you! $12.99 a bottle.

Pours a dark chocolate brown color with a one finger mocha head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind.

Roasted malt aroma with a very strong coffee bean and dark chocolate presence along with a well integrated barrel character. Deep roasted gourmet coffee, dark chocolate, toast and oatmeal complimented by toasted oak. Subtle booze/whiskey in the nose.

Medium bodied with some tight carbonation and a very dry, roasted malt presence that dominates the flavor, lingering into a dry finish. Slightly acrid, heavily roasted coffee bean and bitter dark chocolate notes along with some toffee and oatmeal. Barrel character is most prominent toward the finish with dry, toasted oak complimenting the roasted malt profile and faint boozy whiskey sweetness providing warmth in the finish. Whiskey notes are there but subtle, allowing the other flavors to come through. As it warms the richness from the cocoa and dark malts shine but it's still a bit strong in the roast department for my liking.

Pure black with a cocoa colored head of fluffy and rocky foam that makes some nice lacing on the glass.

If this was a sniff test, I would have guessed this was Founders Breakfast Stout. Lots of coffee and chocolate on the nose.

Mmm, nice big flavor. A big malty blend of coffee and chocolate with some warm alcohol permeating up through my nose. There is some warm lingering bourbon in the background. Seems to be more felt than tasted, but it is a nice little compliment. Throw in some oak also. Very tasty, very long flavor. The flavors are nice and mellow where it seems like it's been aged a while.

Very smooth with a lightly sticky feel. Full bodied and plenty warm.

This is a very nice impy stout. Along the lines of a KBS/Breakfast Stout in my opinion. I may have to grab another bottle or two of this one.

A - Pours dark brown, not black into a tulip with a subtle, creamy, off white head. Leaves trace amount of lacing down the glass as it dissipates.

S - Big blast of espresso/dark roast coffee in the forefront with some dark chocolate notes following.

T - Chocolate and dark roast come up front. The coffee from the nose is muted. Whiskey and the alcohol warmth come running in. An uncommon nutty flavor is coming in on the sides of the palate, something I've not seen much of in an imperial stout.

M - Very pleasant, creamy but not overdone. There's some other more intense coming in as well, but that may be from the nucleation sites in the glass.

O - Delicious beer. Another win from Epic. In this category that's overwhelmingly dominated by bourbon barrel aged beers, this whiskey variety is a true standout.

Almost black body with hints of brown. Small chocolate brown head initially on the pour but has faded to nothing. Lacing is very minimal, gradually falls back into the body.

Big aromas and they're very sweet smelling. Lots of chocolate covered espresso beans, brown sugar, chocolate candy bars, and roasted coffee notes.

Espresso and chocolate are on the palate right away. Not quite as medium or full-bodied as I was expecting this to be. Tastes are actually thin. The beer doesn't seem to be over carbonated so I can't see that being the factor in the watered down flavors. You can detect the coffee, espresso, cocoa, but they don't really shine as much as I thought they would. I do get heat here but nothing that shows me this was aged in Whiskey barrels. Alcohol is quite predominant in the middle then left with a touch of heat and a roasted semi-dry bitterness on the finish.

I was hoping for a little more from this one. It has plenty of things going on that should be good...cocoa nibs, coffee, and aged in whiskey barrels. Altough this one doesn't showcase all that much of a whiskey character and the flavors don't add up to much here. I'd like to see how this beer comes through on tap or a nitro pour.
