I've had this bottle for a while, and now I guess it is the season for hearty stouts.
This pours pitch black with a bit of copper head and a slight trace of lacing
Not that much smell vague hint of malt , pleasant not distinct
this tastes like malt soup with slight hints of wood, chocolate and a solid coffee flavor- delicious
thick, unctuous mouth feel, like a big stout should have
I had high expectations and they were met, maybe exceeded

22oz bottle (Batch #50, 'Blue Copper', @12.6% ABV). Every December 5th, in honour of the American Repeal Day, I extract the biggest, baddest Yankee-brewed offering from my cellar to review. Turns out that this year, I couldn't have had a better option: Big Bad Baptist!

This beer pours a solid black abyss, with the scantest of basal mahogany edges when pressed to the cold glow of the monitor screen, and one skinny-ass finger of weakly foamy, and mostly just bubbly brown head, which leaves some decent arctic iceberg profile lace around the glass as things gently get a move on.

It smells of charred black coffee, grainy caramel malt, bittersweet chocolate, earthy licorice root, gritty American whiskey barrels - corn-fed booze and wood, mostly - a strange dark fruitiness, and some tame weedy, leafy, and musty hoppiness. The taste is rich medium chocolate fudge, fading day-old coffee grounds, toffee-flecked caramel malt, those Scandinavian licorice candies, surprisingly subtle barrel astringencies - a bit of vanilla and rye whiskey-soaked staves - and a generic earthy bitterness.

The bubbles are fairly laid-back, but perform well enough via their supportive frothiness, the body a dense medium-heavy weight, and rather smooth, with a heady and robust creaminess. It finishes sweet, but in a generally moderated sense - the char, coffee, and a mildly acrid booziness seeing to that.

Wowee - for such a high ABV stout, you'd hardly know it, and the chocolate and coffee work together like old buds, with just enough barrel content to make ya happy, without hitting you over the head with it. This Baptist fulfilled my quota and my belly tonight, with big, bad aplomb - but make no mistake, I'm not losing my religion, as my religion is damned (sorry) good beer.

Dark thin brown head with poor retention. Roasted coffee aroma with light vanilla. Strong roasted coffee, light bourbon vanilla and chocolate notes with the bourbon and chocolate in the finish and linger. Light acidity with a rich, smooth carbonation.

After the initial roasted coffee surge the flavors blend nicely with nothing overpowering and everything remains clear. Although the coffee is omnipresent, it is very enjoyable.

Aroma and flavor are all whiskey, and intense. Underlying the whiskey-notes is an intense flavor of chocolate, more present in the finish than elsewhere. Overall, phenomenal, but I can't wait to see what some age will do for this brew.

Tons of cocoa and coffee in the nose and first sip. And very nice amount of whiskey, just enough to announce itself without overtaking it. Cinnamon taste just lightly appears and lasts gently through the finish. This is a complex and well made brew. Very slight barrel character and ok body.

Batch #59 12.3% 2015 edition. This is amazing. The whiskey shines through this thick and creamy stout nicely. The coffee isn't as strong as expected, but it's apparent. It's a bit bitter from the chocolate. However it's smooth and tasty for how strong this beer is.

Batch #63, 12.3% abv, but review applies to multiple releases sampled over the past few years. Despite the fact that Epic changes up the construction and type of coffee, Big Bad Baptist is consistently one of the most potent coffee-forward stouts around. Cacao nibs add a raw, earthy nuttiness to the aroma, but the coffee is clearly the star of the show.

Some other standout coffee stouts, like Treehouse's Double Shot or Modern Times' Mega Black House, are exceptionally smooth, fragrant, and chocolaty, utilizing cold-brew to avoid introducing much additional bitterness. The handful of batches of Big Bad Baptist I've tried, on the other hand, are bold, uncompromising, dark-roasted beasts. The nibs bring chocolate balance to the finish, but there's no effort here to please anyone who isn't a coffee drinker.

The influence of the barrel is to shore up the body into a full, smooth mouthfeel, only adding a touch of wood pulp and spice to the flavors.
