Release number 45. Very good beer lots of whiskey, maybe should have aged it a year or two but the taste was spectacular. Coffee, cocoa, dark fruit and a lovely whiskey bite. Will buy again

Always loved the name.

1/2 inch head on slow pour. Dark brown/ medium black; looks delightful.

Nose is mild coffee and mild chocolate.

Taste is mildly bitter coffee initially followed by chocolate and creamy oatmeal.

A really nice brew, and was at least 3 months old. Would love to have again.

Now this is a real stout!! I'm reacting in part to an imperial stout I had earlier today that was mostly cocoa and not roasty. Big Bad Baptist has a great roasted malt character. It's pretty much the exemplar of an imperial stout. The whisky barrel influence is there, but it takes second place to the stout itself when first served cold. As the beer warms, the bourbon becomes stronger. It's incredibly rich. The ABV is noticeable.

In the last couple of days, I've had seven barrel aged stouts or strong ales. I think this is the best of the lot. If Epic could conjure up the marketing savvy of AB/InBev, people would chase Big Bad Baptist like they chase BCBS.

Serving: on tap, in a snifter.

Update, 6/13/2017: Epic makes different versions of this beer. The batch I'm drinking is made with Blue Copper Coffee.
It's a little different from what I had before. I'm going to leave my ratings alone, but will just remark on some of the differences. Appearance: gorgeous, with a big head and huge lacing and great color. 4.5. Aroma: coffee and whisky. 4.25. Taste: stronger coffee than before, and the whisky seems more prominent too. Maybe just a bit too sweet. Balance is not quite as good. 4.5. Feel: 4. Overall, 4.25. I try to be a tough grader on barrel aged stouts, because the competition is stiff, and any good stout that's barrel aged should be pretty awesome to start. This one isn't quite in the absolute top tier of those babies, but it's pretty damn good.
