First off, when a brewery constantly tweaks recipes... I'm probably gonna be a fan!

So, Epic brewing's finally made it to my northern, frostbitten area of Canada! $21 Canadian per bomber of their batch #50 using coffee from Blue Copper coffee shop in Kansas City at 12.6%. Pours a (not completely pitch) black colour with a thick creamy finger of mocha brown head. Looks super promising!

Predominantly a high-end coffee start, goes into a dark chocolate and bourbon vanilla-ey taste then a milk chocolate middle with some dried dark fruit flavours like a prune and raisin and a still smokey vanilla aura through out. Ends with a strong coffee/hop bitterness. Absolutely beautiful.

Personally I love huge coffee stouts and pick em up whenever a new one comes available, but I usually get way too much coffee. This beer (after 3 1/2 months) balances damn-near perfectly, but still lets you know its a coffee bomb. Best coffee beer I've had thus far and makes me one happy (but cold) Mennonite! Highly recommended!

A little heavy on the coffee notes but overall a great beer.

Pitch black pour with some light tan head that laces nicely. The nose is big time dark coffee, whiskey, dark roasted malts. Very complex flavors. Dark roasted malts, coffee, whiskey, oak, caramel. Simply delicious. The body is full with low-medium carbonation. Really terrific beer.

Batch #59; had on a road trip with my dad in Kanab.

Pours pitch black with a lovely 1 finger of off-white khaki colored head. Great lacing!

Aroma is dominated first by chocolate, then by coffee. Absolutely wonderful smelling beer! It's like smelling a mocha. Not too much barrel or whiskey characteristics.

Taste is an absolute coffee bomb! Big roasted coffee notes. This is followed with some unsweetened cocoa nibs. Nice viscosity to this one, without being overly thick. Also, it has a great amount of carbonation, where it livens the beer but doesn't thin it out. I really am not getting any barrel or whiskey notes from this batch. Perhaps a bit of whiskey alcohol heat just before the finish, but it is a stretch. The coffee and chocolate notes are just so dominant! A very mild amount of bitterness finishes the sip.

Overall, this is a near perfect coffee stout. I see this pairing well with dark chocolate covered pretzels. I prefer this beer to Parabola. It gets a 95.5/100.

*** AGED 1 year update***

Batch 59 with 1 year

Aroma is dominated by earthy coffee. A light amount of chocolate and a little oak.

Cold, this beer is a mess. Very unbalanced; thin and watery in feel, with a surprisingly bitter aftertaste.

As this beer warms, it does get better, but not as good as it was fresh by any means. The beer still feels watery and under-carbonated. Coffee is extremely dominant in flavor. Alcohol is present with astringency. Best to consume out of the fridge-room temp; don't overchill. Bitterness lingers with almost no barrel character. Drink the beer fresh; totally different with age. With age I give it a 79/100.

One of the best Imperial Stouts I have had in a long time. Initial nose is heavy on the alcohol, but that disappears on drinking. Mouth feel is smooth and a little chewy. Very chocolaty with some coffee notes. Experienced on draft.

Such a tasty beer. Strong coffee flavors with some bitter chocolate. Smooth all the way through. Only downside for me was a smokey flavor somewhere in the middle. Still good and will be better after sitting for 2 years.
