Picked this up from a great trade with Evan. Release #12, July 6, 20133. Thick pitch black pour with a one finger caramel colored head with decent retention and great lacing. The nose is rich and roasty with huge coffee notes along with hints of dark chocolate, espresso, cocoa, bourbon, and subtle smoke. The taste follows suit, with the coffee once again being the star. Hints of bourbon, cocoa, dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, subtle piney hops, and a touch of licorice. The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, smooth and velvety, with excellent balance and huge drinkability. Overall, this is one of the best coffee stouts I've tasted. Definitely in the same league as Founders Breakfast and Bourbon County Coffee.

Very dark appearance with little head and just the right amount of carbonation. The aroma is a combination of bourbon and coffee. The very pleasant bourbon and coffee flavor with a hint of alcohol. A little aging should improve this beer.

Batch #36. 12.4% ABV
From everything I've read this beer varies greatly in ABV and ratings from batch to batch. I was lucky to come across several bottles of this 2013 brew and absolutely find it is one of my favorite coffee Imperial Stouts.
Look is black as night with a bit of lacing as I let it sit in my tulip glass.
Smell is amazing with tons of coffee and chocolate mixing with a bit of oakiness as well.
Taste follows the nose with delicious hits of coffee and chocolate and bourbon barrel with each warming taste. Extremely smooth and drinkable for it's ABV.
I've never tried any other batch but this one is a total winner!

Pours oily viscous black. One finger tan head sticks around for a bit before dissipating to a thin layer of film. Impressive head retention for a barrel aged beer.

Smell is a pleasant blend of bourbon barrel, bourbon, cocoa, coffee bean aromas and slight hints of vanilla.

Taste ... holy cow this is how a barrel aged (ba) beer should taste. There is certainly a bourbon barrel character to the beer with flavors of bourbon, barrel, oak, and a hint of vanilla. However, the barrel does not overtake the imperial stout in any way, but rather acts as a complimentary flavor. Most ba beers tend to have more bourbon flavor than stout, but not this one. This is an Imperial Stout first acted in bourbon barrels second and I love it. The stout itself is wonderful. Lots of cocoa, pleasant mild coffee flavor that is not overpowering, deep roasted malts and a discernible hoppy bitterness on the finish. The fact that all the imperial stout notes still shine through is a huge plus and very impressive. Also this beer hides the ABV frighteningly well. You really don't notice it until you're nearing the end of the glass and suddenly you have a realization that wow, that was a hefty beer.

Feel is thick and viscous. Very velvety and smooth with all the flavors nicely melded together. Incredibly sippable. I loved the fact that because of the still present hoppy bitterness on the finish, the beer finishes rather dryly on the end - something I prefer in my Imperial Stouts, but almost never see in a ba Imperial Stout. Really gave it a nice depth to the overall feel.

This might be my favorite ba stout I've ever had. Not necessarily the best one out there, but certainly the only one I'd want to or be able to drink on a regular basis. Major props for balancing the Imperial Stout with the right amount of barrel aging to keep all the flavors intact.

Opaque black pour with no light filtering through at all. Dark khaki head, 1 fingers worth. Only downside is the beer is light on head retention. Thin sheen of wet lace all around the glass.

Nose is very complex. Coffee overwhelms, but cocoa comes through along with oak underneath that. Smells like a roasted chocolate covered espresso bean.

Strong coffee flavor, espresso even, with a strong roast chocolate presence. Citrus hops manage to sneak through all the coffee and chocolate bitters in the finish. Definite smoked oak flavor from the barrels. Not really picking up the whiskey until the very end of the bottle. Vanilla starts to pick up late in the bottle, too. Wow, this is complex.

Feel is a bit disappointing. A little on the thin side. For a beer this powerful on the tongue, a thicker feel would pair better.

Overall, this rivals the best coffee stouts I've tasted. The best beer I've had from Epic.

Pours very dark into a snifter. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Taste is a very strong combination of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate, with a slight bourbon hint. Very smooth feeling in the mouth, as you would expect for such a high caliber stout. Excellent beer.

Looks pitch black, small, light brown head sticking around the glass. Some alcohol legs sticking behind. Looks really nice.

Smells like a mocha. Big chocolate and coffee. Cold pressed coffee, with some cream and sugar perhaps. I wouldn't prefer that sweetness in my own coffee, as I like it black, but it smells like a great chocolatey, coffee forward dessert.

Upfront, the dryness from the oak, then some semi-sweet chocolate and soft vanilla, almost like a cookie. Then it goes down and the alcohol starts to tingle and lightly burn the tongue and warm the throat. Finishes very nicely and balanced.

Lighter side of full bodied, more of a medium plus body. Pretty nice creaminess to it as well.

Overall, if you dislike the thin mouth from KBS and maybe find the coffee to dominate the bourbon and are looking for more balance, then this is for you. Not sure why the ratings aren't more around 4.5. It likely hasn't quite met the masses yet or does not deliver that rareness factor.

Dark brown like bittersweet bakers chocolate. Clear but dark enough light barely penetrates. Medium dark tan head that dissipates to creamy tan foam.

smell:
Bittersweet chocolate, vanilla caramel, butterscotch, espresso, and dulce de leche. Amazing rich depth and complexity.

taste:
All of the richness and characteristics of the aroma. Like a smooth 70% Cacao chocolate, with vanilla, espresso, and sweetened condensed milk. Super phat roasty malts well balanced with the cacao bitterness. Like a beerTiramisu mouthgasm.

mouthfeel:
Big slippery fat oat stout assault, then the slight dry astringency is all over your tongue. Finishes inexplicably simultaneously slippery and dry. Crazy complex.

overall:
OMFG! Stunning. Sign me up for a barrel. Give me a huge Chalice full accompanied by a Tiramisu soaked in French roast espresso with secret layers of blackberry jam. Amazing.

Had release #13, great beer with good balance of chocolate, coffee and grain bill. Whiskey barrel comes through with smoothness more than aroma or flavor. Alcohol at 12.2% is present, but not over whelming. A little sweet and buttery on the tongue, but overall a great production from Epic.

Fairly aggressively poured from a 22 oz. bottle labeled as Release #7 into an unbranded short stemmed tulip/snifter

Pours a motor oil darkest brown bordering on black capped by a two finger fluffy tan head. Some retention, which is unusual for barrel-aged stouts, and even a hint of lacing. The nose is wonderful, espresso, dark chocolate, toasted oak, roastiness, and some whiskey-tinged booziness. The balanced flavor of this brew is amazing: cocoa powder, roastiness, rich dark coffee notes, charred oak, some hints of vanilla and integrated whiskey. Finishes smooth with roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, slick and smooth with some underlying creaminess. Overall this brew is a masterpiece and shows a level of balance rarely found in big, barrel-aged imperial stouts. Impressive on every level.

I just drank a batch #37 bomber over the weekend the perfect year round imperial stout not to heavy not to thin. Has tons of smell taste and mouthfeel to satisfy even the most hard to please stout drinker. I thik its far bettter than many more notable. I need several cases of this on hand.☺

Release #1

A: Thick and deep brown as it pours. Waiting a few moments lets the head grow up out of the body in a nice dark tan color. The beer in the glass is black.

S: Man there is a lot of chocolate in there. The first thing that hits is cocoa nibs, followed by a rich, but slightly bitter smelling coffee aroma. There is a nice oak and vanilla character in the finish, although it is a lot more subdued than the coffee and chocolate. If someone planted a cafe mocha and it grew into a tree, this is how an orchard of them would smell.

T: Coffee, chocolate, and now a hint of the whiskey. The finish is sweet, with a meandering coffee note, and an oaky overtone. It's certainly one hell of a beer.

M: Thick, and creamy. The finish has a bit of an oily feel about it. The carbonation may actually be just a touch high on it for me, but it's a thin line between being a bit too much, and being perfect.

O: This is luscious, rich, and delicious. Everything that a coffee, chocolate, whiskey barrel stout should be. Fine work.

An imposing looking beer... thick black syrup that shows barely an edge of copper clarity, dense half finger of light brown that leaves loads of boozy lacing.

Massive charred wood on the nose, sweet whiskey notes, bitterish coffee presence, sphagnum, burnt caramel, oats, syrupy dark chocolate notes... hot cocoa or something, the 11% abv is perfectly integrated on the nose.

Oh, wow... one word comes to mind - "whiskey-choco-timber-syrup-cafe-caramel." Such enormous flavors taking so many different directions. What I'm actually most impressed by though is the perfect placement of hot whiskey... it blends beautifully with earthy charred woods and mocha flavors. Fantastic stuff.

Wow.

Release #46. Black pour with thick, full finger cinnamon tan head; long lasting cap with clarity underneath; heavy lacing. Cacao nibs and roasted coffee beans nose. Chocolate and coffee flavors up front; a little oak and even less whiskey middle; the alcohol all but hidden in the roast malt finish. Rich, almost full mouthfeel; semi dry, cocoa powdery tongue coating; moderate carbonation. Overall, an excellently balanced stout with bittersweet dark chocolate and roast malt linger.

22 oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a pitch-black color. The head is a finger high, with a tan shade. Creaminess is excellent, but the retention is rather low (unsurprising, considering it’s a 12% barrel-aged monster). Some lacing is at least left on the glass. (4)

Smell: Holy crap. This is mocha heaven. Roasted black coffee, dark chocolate, and brownie batter, oh my! And the barrel presence is beautifully nuanced inside the other notes, bringing very slight vanilla and oak. But the best part? It doesn’t come across as being excessively sweet. This is massive and decadent smelling, yet not cloying or diabetic – in other words, nearly perfect. (4.5)

Taste: The flavor profile thankfully follows through. It opens up with black coffee and dark chocolate (read: mocha), slowly but surely fading into oaky barrel notes. I pick up wisps of bitter hops, dark fruit, and whiskey on occasions. A finishing combination of vanilla cream and *slight* alcohol really just work. As does everything else about this brew – it’s balanced, it’s deep enough, it’s cohesive, it’s sophisticated, it’s beautiful, it’s like someone melted an 85% cocoa bar into my cup of Irish coffee…while in heaven. (4.75)

Mouthfeel: Not quite as viscous as motor oil, but the texture is more than good enough – medium to slightly full bodied, and velvety smooth. It finishes sweetly, though not ridiculously so. It also hits a nice medium between being rich and being easy to drink. Carbonation levels are just right, as well. (4.5)

Overall: This is EXACTLY what I anticipated KBS would taste like. Except there’s no hysteria surrounding the release of this brew, just a ridiculously delicious imperial stout that almost sits on the shelf. But even if this beer did reach KBS/BCBS/Parabola levels of yearly release insanity…I’d still hunt it down like Predator hunting down a fat guy. This beer is worthy of being hyped, and thank Diablo it really isn’t. (4.75)

Release #65. Bottled 10/27/15 according to Epic website. Consumed 5/7/16 so has about 6 1/2 months on it.

Pours jet black, leaving no highlights of any kind. Maybe a hint of cola dark brown at the collar when held up to light.lighter tan head which receeds to a robust collar throughout.

Smell is a lot of chocolate and light coffee background but not overpowering. Pretty subtle aroma but

First taste at pretty cold temp again is chocolate up front with well blended coffee flavors. Coffee flavor not carrying much bitterness at first but then opens up a little more a couple sips in. Some tame whisky flavor and it's just about perfectly complimenting the bittersweet chocolate and roasted flavors. It also has a little bit of sugary sweetness and some vanilla as it warms some. Not a whole lot of deep roast or char flavor. ABV well hidden.

Feel is medium for such a big stout and the carbonation is on the lower end of medium. It's a bit oily and does leave a coating in the mouth but I wouldn't say this is a "heavy" beer. Not much heat from the alcohol.

Very impressed with this beer. I've seen a lot of other enjoys this on BA and I was lucky to find 2 bottles a few months ago. I like it much better than KBS, which is one of the only other BBA coffee stouts I've had. This is the first one and I'm already looking forward to the next. But I think I'll save it for late fall/early winter. Maybe I'll be able to get some more before then.

22oz bomber poured into a chalice. Release # 18, among the first they've brewed in Denver!

A: Opaque with a thick mocha head upon pouring that thins out quickly. Carbonation right out of the bottle is very active and noticeable, at times the bubbles seemed to jump out of the glass disturbing the head. Interesting to see explosive carbonation like this in a stout.

S: Wow! Amazing coffee aromas either espresso or fine ground dark roast. Cocoa nibs and some nutmeg are there as well.

T: Again, powerful coffee flavor. This may be a turn off if you don't like strong, dark coffee, but I love it! The cocoa flavors jump out more here and offer a nice sweetness to balance out the coffee bitterness. Spice really jumps out as the beer warms up - I notice black pepper and maybe some peat from the whiskey barrel. Left with a chewy, gingerbread type flavor at the end.

M: Syrupy, more like black samba than a beer viscosity, but that isn't a bad thing and it thins out eventually. The throat warming effect of the whiskey is noticeable.

O: This is a statement stout. More often, brewers opt to highlight the chocolate / cocoa side of this relationship. I really like the strong coffee expressions in aromas and flavor. Truly worthy of an Epic designation!

Bottle to snifter.

LOOK: dark black, full, tan head,
AROMA: is lots of cocoa, barley and bourbon are also well represented.
TASTE: chocolate, ash, whiskey.
FEEL: smooth, touch of ash4, dryish , powder.

Really nice stout. Very impressed.

Hate the use of the word "Epic" which is way overused, but this is a tasty brew.

I have had Epic's Big Bad Baptist several times from a bomber, but this review is based on my experience having it on tap at Freshcraft in Denver. I had not been overly impressed with Epic Brewing based on my prior limited experiences with their Brainless Belgian-style golden ale and one of their IPAs; however, the Big Bad Baptist came along and converted me with a spiritual awakening that any evangelical Southern Baptists would envy. The Big Bad Baptist pours a deep dark brown/black with a thin brown head. The smell is reminiscent of freshly brewed dark coffee with hints of mocha and vanilla, but the coffee scent definitely dominates. The taste is more righteous than Jesus Christ himself dressed in his Sunday best. Huge dark roasted coffee notes, espresso, bittersweet and milk chocolate cocoa nibs, creamy vanilla, oak, some faint whiskey notes, and some hop bitterness lingering in the background. It has a medium thickness with some creamy vanilla essence in the body that compliments the bitter dark coffee and dark chocolate notes. A beautiful combination of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla flavors. I would not have guessed that the Big Bad Baptist clocked in at 12+% ABV. One of my all-time favorite coffee imperial stouts.

I've had this one in the fridge for a few months just waiting for the right night to pour it. The wicked Michigan weather is breaking and Spring is blooming; I think it is time. This stout pours a near black color with a thick tan head that gives way to a beautiful lasting film and sticky silken lacing. The nose is rich and complex with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, Sweet roasted (almost European style) malts, and plenty of booze. This is definitely a cold weather, warm you up kind of beer. The mouthfeel is thick and luxurious. Coating every inch of taste buds with rich stout flavor. The taste is everything the nose promises. A punch of chocolate and coffee on the front followed by a sweet vanilla and pipe tobacco middle and finished with the bitterness of cacao and burnt coffee. There is also a hop note on the tail that rounds this out to perfect stout elegance. The alcohol prevalent in the nose is nearly indiscernable in the mouth. TThis is an amazingly well crafted stout that is so rich and complex it is almost beyond words. Very well done
I can't wait to sample future batches of this deep well crafted ale.

Beautiful pitch black beer. TONS OF LACING there was a pour trail until the 3/4 head dissipated to almost nothing.

Opening the bottle BOURBON FLEW EVERYWHERE OH MY GOD THE SMELL. once in the glass, chocolate, caramel, vanilla bean, that beautiful whiskey smell.

Flavors were fantastic but not as abstract or deep as I hoped. Chocolate, vanilla, coconut, toasty Wood with bourbon undertones. Stellar taste but a mouth feel that is slick, pleasant and drinkable, but lacks the motor oil thickness and chewiness I find in other stouts.

Top notch regardless!

22 oz bottle. Release #1, 11.7% abv. Deep brown, approaching black. Nice contrasting mocha head. Head fades to a thin layer after a minute, but still a good looking brew. No lace.

Coffee and some cream seem to jump out of the glass. A nice, darker roast. Caramel, burnt sugar, and some bittersweet dark chocolate notes. Maybe a hint of oak.

Dark chocolate, along with some fresh roast coffee. Some dry, burnt notes. Caramel, and burnt sugar. Dry tannins at the finish, along with a hint of booze.

Full body, chewy with lower carbonation. Some warmth at the finish. This is certainly a blast of coffee, with some nice compliments. Very nice.

S: fresh roasted coffee upfront, slight chocolate, a bit of bourbon/oak, dark malts

T: delicious. fresh coffee is upfront followed by a bit of chocolate, a hint of oaky vanilla, and just a touch of bourbon on the finish. alcohol is well hidden, though there is a slight burn on the finish. I would like just a bit more bourbon to come through.

M: thick and creamy. low carbonation, as it appropriate for the style.

O: this is an incredible beer. I'll definitely be seeking this out again.

Bottled Dec. 2011, purchased 2012 at Belmont Station in Portland, brought home to Seattle and consumed in Columbus, OH after moving here over a year ago.

Freaking awesome!!!

Showing the cocoa nib flavors and bitterness with subtle cask aging. Not alcoholic at all! Integrated!

A: Black! with caramel froth. Didn't pay attention to the head.
S: My nose isn't what it could be, so not a lot of anything here. Coffee, roast, dark dried fruit (prunes, raisins?).
T: Roasty, coffee, dark chocolates, caramel, bitterness, but maybe not so much hoppiness.
M: Rich, med-heavy, not alcoholic at all, smooth!
O: I so wish I had lots more of this! Should continue to drink well for more than a year.
