This beer pours a jet black color with a small mocha head that fades quickly to a ring around the edge of the glass. There are a few spots of lacing. Smell is bourbon, oak, vanilla, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste is similar. Bourbon definitely makes itself known, but doesn't dominate like some stouts. Feel is thick, full and viscous. Really Coates the whole palate. Overall a very good stout. Will be on the lookout for this again.

I've heard a lot about this beer. In particular as an alternative to BCBS. This is a phenomenal beer. Super thick, creamy, chocolate, coffee...dessert in a glass. I would say it is a lot less boozy/bourbon on the smell and taste than BCBS. The bourbon is way more subtle. I mention that for two reasons - if BCBS is too boozy, then this is the beer for you. If you want a bourbon bomb, then perhaps not (I still think you'll love it though). Love this beer; wish I bought more than one.

Release #62 - 11.9% abv - La Barba coffee version

Pours black with a fluffy, creamy tan brown head. Smells deeply of roasted coffee, deep dark chocolate, some mild vanilla, whiskey, caramel, toffee and oak. Tastes like huge coffee, dark chocolate, sweet whiskey, vanilla, caramel, toffee, oak, some mild smoke and woodsy herbal notes, with a lingering dark chocolate coffee aftertaste. Feels light-medium bodied, creamy with low carbonation. Overall a really great and balanced whiskey barrel aged imperial coffee chocolate stout.

Pours opaque, pitch black color, with minimal head. Taste is coffee, baker's chocolate, vanilla, and a bit graham cracker. Medium bodied with low carbonation. Super tasty. The graham cracker flavoring really puts this one over the top for me. One of the better coffee flavored imperial stouts I have had in a long time if not due to the balance alone. Delicious, I will get this again.

Dark black with a mocha colored head. Creamy.

Aroma: Coffee, sweet chocolate, bourbon notes, marshmallow.

Taste: bittersweet chocolate, coffee, toasted, roasted, noticeable bourbon flavor which grows as it warms. Blends perfectly with the chocolate.

Tremendous lacing.

Pours very dark into a snifter. Smells of coffee and chocolate. Taste is a very strong combination of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate, with a slight bourbon hint. Very smooth feeling in the mouth, as you would expect for such a high caliber stout. Excellent beer.

Batch #57

Very Dark rich color and and a creamy pour. A brown thin head with very little carbonation. A very roasted malty smell, but a bit of a boozy smell.
The taste....Wow! Such a rich beautiful full and balanced taste. The roasted coffee flavor is so smooth with a soft woody after taste. The boozy smell is is not at all in the taste. Wow This is one of the better beers I have ever had. Wow! Wow! Get this beer if you can!

22oz bottle poured into a snifter. Blue Copper version.

A: Black pour. One finger beige head drops after a short time. Wispy lacing.

S: Freshly roasted coffee beans, coffee bitterness, nutty, smokey, spicy, dark chocolate, whiskey, caramel chews, roasted malts. Excellent balance.

T: Roasted malts, nutty coffee, smokey, bitter dark chocolate, chocolate truffles, and a bit of chocolate sauce. Caramel chews, whiskey, and wood. Nougat. A bit acrid. Char. Bitter coffee finish.

M: Thick body. Full and velvety. Chewy. Decadent. Deeply warming. Mild bite of tingling carbonation.

O: Superb barrel aging. Perfectly balanced. Cream of the crop as far as BA imperial stouts go. Put it on your short list.

A - very nice pour into a snifter. Almost pitched black with lots of foamy head and lacing. One of the most inviting looking stouts I've ever poured.

S - holy chocolate. Lots of green and light roasted coffee too, faint sweet bourbon on the tail end. Truly nice aroma altogether.

T - again, very fresh coffee and a ton of chocolate. Bourbon is there but pretty tame. Faint alcohol presence and a bittering char air malt as it finishes. Bitterness increases as it warms.

M - seemingly too drinkable. It's full and creamy but I'm finding myself sipping this faster than most BB stouts. Wish it had just a bit more "chewyness" to beef it up.

O - good, but not great. A little too bitter and thin for me as well as lacking much barrel flavors.

1 PT. 6 FLUID OUNCE bottle
Served in a snifter
Release #11

This beer pours black and is topped with an inch of mocha head that leaves very little lacing.

Even at three years old the coffee aroma is still there. It is faded but not gone. It allows some anise, chocolate, and roasted malt to come through.

I taste roasted coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt.

Full, creamy mouthfeel

This is a phenomenal beer fresh and pretty damn delicious with some age. This is not a beer I would pass up a taste.

Perhaps this may show the randomness of my ratings but I tried this beer again and had a completely different impression of this beer. Here's my most recent review:

Moderate head that settles to rim bubbles. Little lace (some spots). The color is dark brown where no light can pass even on the edges.

I get chocolate but also the distinctive smell of model airplane glue. Huh? There's also cream and alcohol.

Very rich, both in flavor and in body. Lots of chocolate throughout. The swallow is very warming from the alcohol which dominates the aftertaste as well. Semisweet but with a dollop of sweet cream. Interesting and deceptively drinkable.

Here's the previous review:

4.0 4.25 3.75 4.25 4.0
Served in a brandy snifter. Beige head (small) which leaves a couple of rings for lace. Near black in color. No light shines through the glass at all.

I smell raw freshly ground coffee. I also get some berry in the background.

The flavor starts off surprisingly mild but with time the coffee and other burnt flavors come on stronger than normal. In the swallow some creaminess comes forward -- not enough to balance the coffee which lingers long into the aftertaste. Rich and nearly syrupy. The carbonation helps it from becoming too much.

Batch #55, 12.7% abv.

Pours dark and thick. Dark tan head dissipates to a thin film. Leaves spotty lacing.

Smell is sweet and notes of whiskey. Taste starts with vanilla and cocoa, followed by slow creeping whiskey. The barrel character is subtle at the onset and builds. The flavors come together masterfully. Nice thick, oily mouthfeel. No carbonation, but nice body.

Overall, this is a fine example of a barrel aged imperial stout. The tastes are not unique, but the balance is excellent. Not too hot, but a sipper none the less.

A: Poured into a DFH snifter to a deep black beer topped by a finger of dark tan head that fades to a small mat on top of the beer with some lacing
S: Smells of huge fresh roasted coffee and bitter dark chocolate. There may be some whiskey barrel notes hiding in the back too but the coffee is the star of the show on the nose
T: Taste is roasted coffee, dark chocolate, a little vanilla and caramel, some slight oak comes in as well. Big roasted malt as well with some slight charred wood. Swallow is a little alcohol but mostly chocolate and coffee with some lingering barrel notes and some roasted malt
M: this beer is pretty full in body with soft but adequate carbonation and a slightly dry finish
O: A world class American Imperial Stout. Great flavors and great complexity yet still very drinkable. This is up there with the Eclipse beers from FiftyFifty. If you see this you need to buy it.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a nice large dark brown foamy head with good retention. Aroma of chocolate notes with light vanilla and coffee notes is quite awesome. Taste is also a great mix of creamy chocolate notes with some vanilla and bourbon notes and light floral coffee notes which is well integrated in the mix. Body has nice creamy texture with good carbonation and no real apparent alcohol notes. Super well-balanced with great drinkability.

Bomber poured into tulip.

L. Pitch black with nice 2 finger head, plus sticky lacing.
S. Tons of coffee, but not overwhelming. Nice sweet malt and chocolate.
T. Follows the nose with the coffee and chocolate. Add some vanilla and a touch of caramel. Outstanding. Not detection of booze, super smooth.
F. Medium mouth feel. Nice carbonation.

Tan head. Black color. Batch #65.

Lots of coffee and a tad too much roast. The thinner body is a distraction, but other than that it's solid. Chocolate and cocoa. Oaky and vanilla. Big whiskey flavors.

Solid offering, I could drink a lot of this.

This beer poured a nice shiny black color into my snifter glass. The nose is smooth with a nice whiskey aroma in the front. There are also notes of coffee and cocoa here. The taste has a nice mellow whiskey flavor but there is a little under lying bitterness from the coffee that detracts a little from this beer. The mouthfeel is smooth and nicely carbonated.

I don't see an actual bottle date on here but the label says Release #51 and SLC # 2667
My bottle also lists 12.7%ABV which is stronger than the ABV listed here.

Appearance: Black body with a short creamy head that is light brown. It is a short head but it maintains a cap for a while then it fades out to a ring. Some spots but no real lacing.

Aroma: I smell some wood aroma married evenly in strength with the scent of coffee. It is a very mellow aroma.

Taste: Up front I get a good chocolate flavor and then this bourbon-like woody flavor. The beer says it is made with coffee and while I did pick up on its aroma I'm not getting any in the flavor.

Mouthfeel: It's a very drinkable beer with a nice dry finish. I wouldn't say it is full bodied but again it has too much presence to be medium bodied. It rests evenly between the two. I would say that it carries a presence of a regular stout vice an imperial one. It just has a little less coating potential on the palate. It is a high ABV beer (12.7%) and it doesn't burn the palate or hamper drinkability at all.

Overall: I would say this is an outstanding chocolate coffee barrel aged imperial stout and I would recommend it and I would drink it again.

Release #55, poured into an Epic snifter at 55*F.

It pours a dark brown with an ample amount of lacing. The smell is the best feature of this beer: chocolate, whiskey, malt, vanilla. Sadly, the barrel doesn't show through the somewhat dry chocolate and coffee. The feel is thin, honestly, and smooth'ish, but leaves some to be desired when compared to the top dogs. Overall, I can understand the chocolate/coffee style but it isn't my thing. It gets better as it warms but that baking chocolate flavor...

Big Bad Baptist . . . appearance is the typical pitch black. Nothing really note worthy going on there. The aromas are off the charts however. With vanilla, coffee, chocolate, cocoa and cinnamon this beer is sure to please the sense of smell. Flavors follow close behind the aromas. I can almost tell exactly how this beer is going to taste just by smelling it. I honestly don't pick up on much barrel character with this though. The bourbon is subtle, which is nice. Mouth feel is slick, oily, smooth slight carbonation at first but finishes dry and ashy. Overall it's a delicious imperial stout that is always consistent no matter the batch.

Batch 59. This is an excellent imperial stout. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of big coffee-forward stouts. Huge amounts of coffee in the nose and taste. Hard to believe it is 12.3% alcohol as you cannot taste any barrel from this at all.

Batch # 54, bottled 09/16/15 according to their website

Appearance - Pours black with dark cola brown edging with a dark tan, half finger width head. Sub-par retention, then dissipates to a mostly barren surface with a thin ring around the edge. Lacing consists isn't much outside a few small spots.

Smell - Coffee and a fudgy 'chocolate syrup' character really stand out in the aroma. Mild whiskey notes sit well beneath.

Taste - Follows the nose. Fudgy chocolate with lesser 'iced coffee' flavors of roast and a touch of caramel. Just enough whiskey character, with hints of leather, oak, vanilla and general booziness, to let you know it's there without overrunning the entire experience. The finish consists of earthy coffee character with lesser fudgy sweetness, and it lingers beautifully.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full in body with low carbonation. Super creamy texture that coats the mouth without much syrupy stickiness. Goes down stupid easy and finishes somewhat dry.

Overall - Oh wow, this is a beauty. So much flavor that seamlessly comes together to deliver an amazing drinking experience. I would gladly trade for this again, and I'll definitely keep an eye out the next time I travel to SoCal or Reno.

Beautiful pitch black beer. TONS OF LACING there was a pour trail until the 3/4 head dissipated to almost nothing.

Opening the bottle BOURBON FLEW EVERYWHERE OH MY GOD THE SMELL. once in the glass, chocolate, caramel, vanilla bean, that beautiful whiskey smell.

Flavors were fantastic but not as abstract or deep as I hoped. Chocolate, vanilla, coconut, toasty Wood with bourbon undertones. Stellar taste but a mouth feel that is slick, pleasant and drinkable, but lacks the motor oil thickness and chewiness I find in other stouts.

Top notch regardless!
