Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Our first ever collaborative beer has all the familiar flavors of the season, but done with Epic style. To a base of strong, roasty, and chocolaty porter, we add 200 pounds of real pumpkin per batch, five spices and whole Madagascar vanilla beans. As you pour this deeply ruby brown beer, you’re greeted by the aroma of fresh cut squash, followed by rich chocolate. The flavor starts sweet with marshmallow, vanilla, and some pumpkin pie, then yields to a coffee roast and darkchocolate dryness. This beer is a great introduction for curious drinkers and a special holiday treat for fans of the style.

Good thick head. A solid rich dark color, moderate lacing. Carbonating Is on the lighter side, but not weak or flat. Smells strongly of nutmeg, vanilla bean, but not so much pumpkin. The taste however taste like pumpkin and vanilla. I definitely have the urge to make a pumpkin porter shake with this one. It's got a pleasant mouthfeel, has a good crispness to it for a porter. Very drinkable, overall, my favorite Pumpkin Porter next to Four Peaks.

8%ABV. per bottle label.Poured a deep roasted chesnut brown with a thinner light tan colored had atop.Aromas were on the lighter side with some vanilla and mild roast mainly. The flavor of this beer makes it with its complexity and how good it is,lightly roasted with some pie spice but the pumpkin flavor really stands out,a lingering vanilla flavor over top of roast in the finish.I think this beer is vastly underrated,it's complex and flavorful.I think Epic makes some top notch beer, this is top notch for the fall season.Got get some.

22 oz bottle. Pours brown with a medium creamy tan head that quickly diminishes to a thin collar that leaves some lacing.

The aroma is a bit subdued - sweet chocolate malts and some pumpkin and pumpkin spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice).

The flavor is sweet chocolate malts with a little roast and a lot of pumpkin spice (cinnamon, nutmeg, all spice). The mouthfeel is medium to full bodied with smooth carbonation.

Overall, a nice pumpkin porter.

32 oz. growler filled last week poured into a 20 oz. shaker.

A - Pours a rich dark copper/brown with deep ruby red highlights. Two-finger head of sudsy, loose, chocolate shake foam that collapses at a moderate pace, leaving a thick ring of large lace around the glass. Surface eventually shows several puffy islands of foamy bubbles surrounded by a fine sheen of lace. Held to a full-spectrum light, the beer is a dark brown with hints of very deep red at the edges. It's almost completely opaque, but clear, with just the slightest amount of light penetrating through the glass.

S - Well-toasted and gently roasted malts. Milk chocolate. Raw, fresh pumpkin - as if carving a Jack O' Lantern - floats into the nose. Ripe, fresh squash. Smells a bit like chocolate chip zucchini bread. Hints of nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon. Background of marshmallow seems to envelope the nose, with a sweetness that suggests warmed whole milk for cocoa. As it warms, spices become a bit more prominent.

T - Just like the nose suggests - lightly roasted malts softly feature 50% milk chocolate with a nutmeg garnish. Very subtle notes of raw pumpkin emerge in the back-end. Toasted pumpernickel bread. Herb/woodsy bitters along with a bit of spice such as ginger and clove clean the palette in the finish. As it warms up, notes of vanilla push into the front of the quaff. Toward the end of the growler, the pumpkin/spice really stepped forward. No trace of the ABV until the tummy begins to warm.

M - Leans toward the creamy side, with a fair amount of carbonation. Light-medium body with solid structure. Nicely integrated components. Short, clean, and rather dry finish.

O - An interesting and pretty tasty combination of styles. Nicely balanced, with the chocolate of the porter complementing the spices. This beer strikes me as one to have in a flight of seasonal beers, starting with a couple Marzens, followed by a pumpkin or two, and then followed by this. This would offer a great transition to either a robust porter and imperial stout track or a holiday spice track. The pumpkin gives the beer an earthiness not found in standard robust porters, and it's a pleasant change-of-pace.

Appearance- As brown as a beer can get without being black. Great lacing throughout.

Smell- This is the weak link in the beer. coffee and butterscotch, which is to be expected from a porter. None of the pumpkin or spice comes out.

Taste- The smallest amount of fall spices, but if you didn't know it was a pumpkin porter, you would never tell. Mostly stout-like tastes.

Mouthfeel- Great mouthfeel! A thick and creamy beer that stays on the tongue for about 15 seconds.

Overall- A great tasting beer, but a big let down for being an imperial pumpkin porter. Its worth trying, but don't rush for this one.

Tasted during pumpkin share. Intial pours like typical porter and has slight pumpkin smell. The taste however, can best be described as a dirty pumpkin.

Poured cold from the bottle. This beer had a very dark brown/orange colour with minimal head. There smell is that of a subtle pumpkin pie: pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, and spices. The smell was not as strong as many of the other pumpkin beers. The taste is similar to the smell as a subtle, but not overwhelming, pumpkin flavour hits right away. It then moves to a bitter/smokey aftertaste.

Would I buy it again? Yes.

Dark brown in color with very little light seeping through. There's a fingernail of khaki colored head. Brussels lacing. Aroma of cinnamon and nutmeg are most prevalent. There's a faint whiff of pumpkin pie spice mixed in. The flavor is a blend of nutmeg, cinnamon, dark malt, plum, fig, and pumpkin. The mouth is a bit sticky and dry.

Absolutely caught off guard by this beer ! I was not expecting the flavor assault I got from this one. Pours, looks, feels and tastes more towards the stout end of the spectrum rather than on the porter side of things. Categorized as a Pumpkin ale is sure to throw some off . . . it did me. The pumpkin is there for sure, don't misunderstand. But it is done in such a way that leaves most other pumpkin beers still sitting in the patch watching this beer flourish as far as the style goes. Thick, roasty with hints of vanilla, chocolate and coffee, it is a great addition to your fall beer lineup.

A nice big glass of Pumpkin Porter, not really the season but damn it's interesting and a collaboration with DC Brau and Epic no less. Pours pitch black maybe light ruby highlights as it pours, dark tan head foaming thick. Aroma bright spice, big fleshy pumpkin gourds, with dark caramelized sugars coating the malts and vegetable additions. Beautiful beer I'm really enjoying the blend of flavors as it warms, fruity/gourd flesh...sugar coated dark roasts mix into a unique and wonderful beer along with light pumpkin spice enjoying every sip. Mouthfeel is a bit thin with even carbonation strong spices left behind between sips. Wonderful roasted malt pumpkin spice blended nicely with a moderate alcohol level, so interesting...I've never had anything else like this quite nice, something I will seek out again in the future.

Poured a very dark brown, almost black. Nice two finger fluffy tan head with good retention and lacing. Mostly coffee and pumpkin, didn't get much spice in the nose at all. The flavor was predominantly coffee, chocolate and pumpkin, with just a hint of allspice. The mouthfeel was pretty full for a porter, as it seems that most are somewhat thin, but this one was quite nice. Overall, this was a nice tasty beer, will probably have a few more of these great local brews before the season is past us.
