Style: Pumpkin Ale

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.00%

Availability: Fall

Notes / Commercial Description:
Formerly Fermentation Without Representation Imperial Pumpkin Porter

Our first ever collaborative beer has all the familiar flavors of the season, but done with Epic style. To a base of strong, roasty, and chocolaty porter, we add 200 pounds of real pumpkin per batch, five spices and whole Madagascar vanilla beans. As you pour this deeply ruby brown beer, you’re greeted by the aroma of fresh cut squash, followed by rich chocolate. The flavor starts sweet with marshmallow, vanilla, and some pumpkin pie, then yields to a coffee roast and darkchocolate dryness. This beer is a great introduction for curious drinkers and a special holiday treat for fans of the style.

A group of us regulars at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop decided to have our own #PumpkinChallenge 2016 and as it is nearing its grand finale, I figured that this is a good time to review it. Sure, it a is a bottle, but I have gotten in enough CANs recently that I CAN make a minor deviation.

From the bottle: "You are holding something special - one of only a few thousand bottles released. Intrigued? Visit www.epicbrewing.com to explore this limited brew's precise details."; "Release # 32[;] 8.3% Alc/Vol[;] SLC # 4326".

I am mildly intrigued, but I am more interested in Pop!ping the cap on this bottle. It comes as a 22-fl. oz. bomber bottle, so a gentle pour is called for as I do not want to deal with any overflow. I sat back & watched as I got a pseudo-cascade, followed by the formation of two-plus fingers of dense, foamy, light-tan head with good retention. Color was Very Dark Brown to Black/Opaque (SRM = > 34, < 44) with NE-quality clarity and ruby highlights. Nose had a coffee-like roastiness, accompanied by a spiciness of cinnamon, nutmeg & ginger. It is really a Porter first and a Pumpkin Ale second and I definitely got its base on the nose. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but on the approach. The taste was chocolaty & spicy & very reminiscent of Mexican hot chocolate! Man, this was a) different & b) unexpected and c) I went to their website as directed, but the last release was #30 while mine is #32, so I am unable to provide the brewery's details. I kind of want to buy another bottle, set it aside until the dead of winter, make a double boiler & mull this beer. I would be that it would be fantastic warmed on a cold night. In the interim, the finish was dry, which was really a product of all of the spices which were involved, despite the chocolaty sweetness. I was really impressed by this one, but I wish that the brewery had provided the promised details. Hmmm.

22oz bottle, release #32, @ 8.3% ABV, and one of the few new pumpkin brews to show up thus far around here of late - pity.

This beer pours a clear (I think), very dark orange-tinted brown colour, with one flabby finger of puffy, rather loosely foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some disintegrating iceberg shelf lace around the glass as it slowly wafts away.

It smells of earthy mashed pumpkin puree, some clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger spice, bready and doughy caramel malt, a fairly sour milkiness, bittersweet cocoa, free-range ash, and some subtle earthy, leafy, and floral hoppiness. The taste is chocolate liqueur, vegetal pumpkin flesh, now muddled seasonal spices, stale cream, a hint of dark orchard fruitiness (cherry or plum?), some gentle oily nuttiness, real vanilla pods, and more tame earthy and herbal green hop bitters.

The carbonation is quite light on its fizzy and frothy feet, the body a solid medium weight, and mostly smooth, just a bit of roast and burgeoning alcohol heat getting in the way of a fully good time here. It finishes trending dry, the spice and booze taking the reins of this veering and careening ride.

Overall, this turns out to be pretty much what it proclaims: porter, pumpkin, and an 'imperial' level of wowee sauce - toss in some middling pie-friendly spice, muss it all up into a good lather, and sit back and enjoy. My only caveat is don't go in expecting a sweet confection sort of experience - this is certainly more stiff mixed drink than pumpkin latte.

Appearance: Deep amber in color, with a large tan head, which slowly fades to a scattering of foam, with some scattered archipelagos of coarse bubbles that ride atop the surface.

Aroma: Pink bubble gum is quite prominent in the aroma, as well as chocolate, vanilla, pumpkin, cloves, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sweet, vinous alcohol also offers its contribution.

Taste: Opens with dark roasted malt, caramel, and toffee. Pumpkin pie spices are present in good measure as well: cloves, cinnamon, and ginger. Sweet, vinous alcohol soon presents, as well. Later in the taste, there is a wave of bitter cocoa and coffee. Towards the close of the taste, the pumpkin pie spices offer a bold flourish. Finishes with a lingering wave of spices and mild herbal hops.

Mouth feel: Smooth and very pleasant, with a little zesty carbonation.

Drinkability/notes: A superb, over-the-top example, would be a wonderful, elegant compliment to a Thanksgiving dinner.

Presentation: Packaged in a custom 22 ounce brown glass bomber, served in a New Belgium Brewing chalice.

In Memoriam: Pumpkin (April 1998 - November 22, 2014) - the best cat ever. We will always miss you.

Wasn't exactly sure what i was buying at the time. I really like Pumpkin section, yes they actually have a "pumpkin section" I was floored. I purchased a case of Wolaver's organic pumpkin, about a litre of pumpkin porter, and the very popular with pumpkin heads, the might Pumking! (which is actually my least flavorite)If this shit gets warm it tastes rancid!

Tasted during pumpkin share. Intial pours like typical porter and has slight pumpkin smell. The taste however, can best be described as a dirty pumpkin.
