Notes: Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, brewmaster/owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Sasion into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

poured from a 1pt. 6 fl. oz. - Release #9 - March 22, 2016

Epic Brewing Elder Brett Saison-Brett Golden Ale poured a light clear gold color producing a white 1/2-finger head. The head dissipated to a ring of foam and spotty lacing. The nose is clean; crisp, and floral/grass like. The taste is funky and tart. Green apple flavor dominates with other light fruit [i.e., pears, white grapes] following...almost like a white wine. Mouth feel is medium bodied with a fizzy carbonation and a light tart finish.

Overall, Elder Brett Saison is refreshing and drinkable. If you like the taste of light tart green apples this is the brew for you.

hazy burnt gold with a white head that fades quickly and doesn't leave lace. nose is chardonnay, brett, sweat, lemons, pears, melons and a hint of mineral. taste follows suit with a nice white peppery brett character and an almost salty mineral character mingling with citrus, white wine notes and melon. tasty, but lacking a bit in the middle. dries out in the end nicely. medium body with a hint of prickle, and no alcohol presence. the competition is getting thick in the wild, wine-barrel aged world. this one is fine and tasty, yet doesn't quite stand up to some of the truly epic brews out there. i'm not complaining though. love to see more breweries try this kind of stuff.

22oz bottle served into two tulips

A – Pours a bright pale yellow with almost greenish hues, reminiscent of the label coloring. Tall bright white head fades rather quickly to leave a think cap with spotty lacing behind.

S – Smells of tart and crisp green apple, ginger, lemon, allspice, vinegar, funk, oats, brett featured wonderfully.

T – Taste builds upon tart and sweet granny smith apple notes, as well as a nice bitter lemongrass tone, slightly spicy and funky brett finish.

M – Medium bodied, highly effervescent, really nice balance here.

O – Fantastic collaboration between two great breweries, there is a great balance within this one.

Pours a white head head. Leaves some decent lace. Color is a slight hazed golden yellow.

Aroma: Very fruity and herbal. Lemon and green apples. Very earthy. A very slight amount of brett. Fairly tart. This beer is smelling awesome.

Aroma: Tart green apples and pears. lemon zest and citrus. Spices. Brett. Yeast. Funkiness is here. Farmhouse flavors. This beer is awesome.

Mouthfeel: Spiced, tart, and clean. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends dry.

Overall, this was a great beer. By far the best Epic beer I have had. A great saison with a nice tart and fruit flavor. The brett was mild, but I liked it. Very enjoyable! Very drinkable!

22 oz. bomber, Release #2, listed at 9.5%

A: Pours a lightly hazy dark goldenrod with a creamy large white head, good sticky lace.

S: Notes of white wine, oak, pear and golden apple. Musty leather as well.

T: Bretty, but not over the top. A nice balance to everything. Dominated by white pepper spice, pears and apples. The barrel character just adds more of that on to everything. Light notes of funk, but in the end, a fairly straightforward beer.

M: Medium-bodied with a very soft ethereal carbonation. Light crisp acidity brings everything up a notch.

O: A very good effort. Do I like the price - no. Do I like the beer - yes, quite a bit. Certainly a must try once for the adventurous beer geek.

22 ounce bottle

Appearance is a clear golden yellow, small white head, minimal retention, and no lacing

Smell is tangelo, grapefruit, and oranges, a bit of vinegar, straw, Belgian yeast, and strawberries

Taste is very similar to the aroma, brettanomyces and other wild yeast up front with sharp sourness for a saison, sweetens up as it warms, too boozy in the finish towards the end, was much better at its coldest with the first few sips

Mouthfeel is prickly with lots of carbonation, very thin but I think that helps lighten it up because it is borderline boozy once it warms, not much body

Overall was a nice and complex saison with nice citrus notes, a hint of berries, and some straw, it would have been a lot more enjoyable had it been a few percent lower in alcohol

Poured from tap into tulip at papago in Scottsdale. I am such a huge fan of crooked stave so im pumped for this.
The initial pour is a bit of a let down...poured an aggressive foam but diminished to nothing pretty quick. Really awesome funk aroma mixed with some sweet grape like aroma. Taste is slightly sweet grape or white wine funk...but somewhat tart. Some floral or herbal notes as well.
Super easy to drink this brew and so enjoyable.
Awesome.

Thanks to Francois for sharing at his bottle share.

Nice fizzy head, hazy golden peach colored.

Nose nice fruit funk, light tangerine guava like fruit, some Brett funk, light sweet blond malts,

Taste nice Brett barnyard funk to start, grassy hay, grainy, then guava fruit and some stone fruit skin must, little juicy citrus fruit as well and touch of lemon zest, sweet blond malts. Pretty tasty, but not much for saison flavors, more of a blond ale with Brett.

Mouth is med to lighter bodied, nice effervescent carb.

Overall not bad, some nice barnyard funk but a bit too light, I do like the idea of blond ale instead of real saison characters, but I love my saisons more so I would have preferred that, and nice fruit flavors, but a bit too malty sweet.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma has a good bit of brett in it, as well as some lacto notes, which are complimented by the wheat and lemon characteristics. The flavor has quite a bit of brett and leathery funk it in, with some wheat and a little bit of green pepper and Belgian yeast. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very odd beer, but one I found pretty enjoyable.
