Epic Brewing Company’s latest barrel-aged beer brings something new—wild yeast. This brew is a collaboration ale with Crooked Stave Artisan Brewing of Fort Collins, Colorado. Chad Yakobson, brewmaster/owner of Crooked Stave, is well known for his skill and knowledge in the brewing of sour and Brettanomyces driven beers. The beer was brewed at Epic by the two brewers. Kevin Crompton, Epic’s brewmaster, and Chad spent several weeks working on the recipe and selecting the proper Brett strains and barrels for the beer to morph from a golden Sasion into a Saison-Brett Golden Ale.

22 ounce Batch #9, 9.4%, brewed 11/23/2014, bottled 3/22/2016.

Found this in a bottle store and snagged it immediately. Poured into a tulip with a deep golden body capped with a small white head. Sour funk smell hits you immediately followed by a grape and grass pleasant aroma. Taste followed the smell with a nice wine tinge that I really like in a saison. I assume the wine taste comes from the barrels. Mouthfeel was very refreshing. Perfect farmhouse ale selection for an early summer night.

Too bad they don't make this anymore because this deserves to be tried by all fans of the style. The bottle place had one more left which I'll do my best to snag.

22 oz bottle
Batch 2
Aged 8 years

First half:
Crystal clear
Super bubbly
Nose is nice and complex, but an overwhelming smell of rotten grapes, sweaty feet and damp basement overwhelmed everything nice.
Taste follows nose

Drain poured it 3.25 overall

2nd half
Roused yeast and poured extra cloudy
Looks like a super opaque, rustic wheat.
Smell is again complex, over ripe fruit, pleasant funk this time.
Taste follows nose, really a great beer.

Overall 4.25

Tale of two half’s of beer. Truly an amazing experience.

22 oz bomber from Hinda65 poured into New Belgium glass. 10.1% ABV.

Hazy blonde and 1/2 finger of creamy head that dwindles to a thin ring.

Aroma of funky sour grapes and oak, with some Brett and hay.

Flavor is out of this world. First taste I got came back through my nostrils and burned them, not sure what that was about. But it starts with a wonderful mash-up of sour white grape, mango, heavy oak barrel and oak tannins, and funky yeast. It's wine-like, it's grape-like, but super oaky. It is sour, but it is the right kind of grape-y sour, with lots of barrel and oak and funk to balance it.

Feel is crisp and creamy and smooth with lots of tannins and acidity, and just the right amount of alcohol burn.

Overall, an outstanding beer worthy of seeking out. Definitely try to get this one.

Release #9. 9.4% ABV. Clear golden with slight filmy head. Smell is sweet fruity - peach or grape. Taste is tart but sweet, rather vinous. Feel is is medium bodied, little carbonation. Overall, pretty good but somehow missing something. Seems almost more winelike than a beer.
