La Porte Noir – "The Black Door" is a superb bar, not that far from the Centraal Station, perhaps a 10 minute walk maximum. This bar was my “local” when I stayed at a nearby Youth Hostel.
Everything this bar exhibits is different, first of all you enter by walking over a small wooden drawbridge, then, you descend down the stairs into splendidly looking multi-roomed brick arched cellars. Apparently, these are 16th Century Wine Cellars, and the ambience and atmosphere here is exceptionally good, coupled with candlelight and Celtic music, this place will have you “chilled out” in no time. As you enter from the stairs, the bar is on your immediate left, and straight ahead hung on the wall in front of you, is a flag that is comprised of 6 other flags (Eire, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, Cornwall plus 1 other I did not recognize). This immediately announces the bars Celtic theme and connections. Indeed it advertises itself as a "CeltiBar"
On draft there are around 10 beers. The Beer List itself numbered 85+ on my count, though Tim Webbs Guide says 130, perhaps I was “well-oiled” when I counted them, missed a page on the beer menu, or it changes. Either way, the range is exceptionally good and has many surprises and oft unseen beers. For lambic heads it sells Boon Pertotale Faro on draft, and from the Bottle has both the White and Black label Girardin Gueuze (rare to see both labels together - try a parallel tasting!). The beautiful Girardin Kriek 1882 is also available. Abbeye Des Rocs beers are well worth a try, as indeed are the small range of Ellezelloise beers. My favourite here was the Du Pont III, or Avec les Bons Voeux de la Brasserie (to give it it’s Sunday Best name), a seasonal beer from the Du Pont Brewery. At 9.5% it is a highly hopped spicy beer. No Food, but does small snacks.
This is a bar that has plenty of character, albeit having a strong Celtish-Gothic feel. It has a cellar full of ambience, and a bloody good beer range. If you need a visual enhancement to aid your beer selection, as you walk down the stairs there are a couple of glass fronted fridges to your right. Get up and have a look at these, it always helped me decide what was next. Drool over the selection and plan your nights drinking.
Totally different and well worth the 10 minute walk from the Grand Place/Centraal Station. But be warned!! Drinking in a Cellar will give you Trogolodite characteristics, that you may find hard to shake off.
Last Visit 11/28/02.

very cool vibe - as you go down flight of stairs from the street to the cellar bar. awesome brick arched low ceilings, feels like a bunker in a good way. Good selection on draft of both traditional and modern Belgian beer. Bartender was friendly.

A great cellar bar. Cool relaxed vibe, knowledgeable staff, only good beer to select from. Never been crowded or loud, other than some metal music one time. Off the beaten tourist path. I’ve Only had beer there. Definitely worth checking out if your plans take you nearby.

This is one of the coolest beer bars that I've been to. It's a medieval cellar that just puts you in the mood for some awesome Belgians. They had a great selection, price was good, and since this was a hike to get to--seemed more of a locals place. Took the whole family and had a wonderful evening.

Magnificent establishment and undoubtedly my favourite bar in Brussels, quite a boast considering the competition. Wonderfully atmospheric and non-touristy. Non-discriminating staff welcome all ages, nationalities and tastes. Always helpful and keen to share recommendations.

Ever reliable availability of draft beers. Always changing and reasonably priced. Simple bar style snacks but it's not about the food. This is 'the' place to enjoy great local beers as a well as those from further afield.

This is the perfect showcase for some of the greatest beers Belgium has to offer. Plenty of bottled gems too, impeccably kept and incredibly moreish.

By all means visit but only tell those who you must!

This is a very nice bar, although it might not be for everyone.

Basically, it's a dark basement (often no cell phone connection) with loud music and many young people. Often foreign students, I have the impression. The music is mostly rock and metal, although occasionally I've heard some jazz too. If that's your cup of tea this can be a great place.

The staff knows their beers, and is very friendly. On the downside, their stock of glasses for some beers is not too big, so occasionally I got a beer in a similar but not correct glass.

Everything else except the beers here is not recommended. The soda selection is small, the coffee is tasteless and the wine is below par. This is something to take into account when you have non-beer drinking people in your group and you consider this bar.

Anyway, if you think you can like the dark atmosphere and the music, this can be a great place.

This place is a true beer-drinkers bar. There is no Jupiler or Maes to be found here. I went with my friend who usually drinks Coors Light, Bud Light, etc., and he really had a hard time choosing, because he's really not into the whole craft beer thing (he finally settled on a St. Bernardus Wit, which he thought was alright). For me, and any other BA, though, this place is great. There are tap lists displayed throughout the bar, and rather than have the fridges with the bottled beers stuck somewhere in a dark corner behind the bar where you can barely see the selection, they are conveniently situated on the customer's side of the bar, so you can really browse the selection.

It was fairly crowded on the night I went, and there was only one bartender, so ordering was a hassle (on one occasion I think I probably stood at the bar waiting to order for 10 minutes). Although, the lone bartender that was present was very knowledgable, and he helped me choose and gave me recommendations.

The atmosphere of the bar is great. It is located in an old brick cellar (perhaps formerly a beer cellar and/or bomb shelter), with some traditional Celtic and British décor. They often have live music (the folk club performs once a month), and the acoustics of the place are great.

Overall, a very cool bar that I plan on returning to regularly.

This is one of my favorite spots in Brussels.

Bartenders are knowledgeable, and happy to make recommendations. Approximately 10 beers on tap - none of which are your standard Belgium fair (Chimay, Kwak, Stella, etc.). They venture into lesser known beers of similar greatness... I will have to grab some notes on their current tap selection and update this post. Great place to try something new, or find an old favorite.

They have a decent selection of bottles available, some in clearly visible coolers at the front. Not the widest selection (dozens and dozens rather than thousands) - but a nice selection that branches out from the norm. Gulden Draak was definitely available. Their beer list can be seen here (although I don't think they make frequent updates):

The setting is sublime - dimly subterranean brick archways and simple seating (benches with tables in the main room). A medieval feeling to it. They have 3 distinct rooms, but one bar. It works out well since they generally have some sort of Live Music available most nights, and you can go to the far room if you are looking for conversation, or get right into the mix.

Great for a post work happy hour, or a late and rowdy night.

Highly recommended.

Wow, nobody has reviewed this place in 5 years! It was highly recommended in Tim Webb's book so my brother and I ventured a few block from the little dude peeing and voila!

Such a cool place inside. Celtic themed dungeon/castle type atmosphere. This is not a cheesy "oirish" pub at all, well unless you are simply looking for a place to drink a pint of Guinness.

They have an extensive menu of bottled beers and quite a few on tap as well. The coolers are right when you walk in so you can look over the selection that way as well. There is also a selection of bottles posted on a little chalkboard which seemed to be things that maybe were limited but not so much limited releases.

I had a bottle of Boon Mariage Parfait that was very good and they had 3-4 De La Senne beers in the cooler as well. My brother had some of the Equinox. It was just a really cool atmosphere and I think had there not been more places to see we would have stayed all afternoon...well, that and the 15 or so German tourists that came in during our second beer and made it hard for us to hear eachother...

Under new ownership, the selection has suffered and the look has changed a bit, I guess the Guinness sign outside says it all.

One of the hippest places, and a haven for locals of the younger beer drinking crowd, is La Porte Noire. Located in an eerie 18th century brick basement, moody music echoes throughout the bar ... the candles have been replaced by track lighting. :-( None the less they still have a decent selection of beer and with nearly eight taps which seemed to be the freshest compare to the 60+ bottles. Worth the visit just to check it out.

This bar is located in downtown Bruxells, just a few blocks from the Manekin Pis. The atmosphere is awesome! You walk down a few flights of OLD stairs, into a cellar, with many other cellars within it. I heard this building is from the 1500's, and I would not doubt it! The quality of the beers tried was excellent...we had a girardin kriek 1882 and a draught La Chouffe. Both were served very well by the kind and attentive bar tender. The selection is great 100+ bottles in two viewable coolers, and about 8 or 10 tap selections. Unfortunately they were out of the St. Bernardus 12 on tap and the bottled Fantome Saision when I was last there. Don't miss this place on your Bruxells visit!
