Sparta - exactly where you think of when contemplating where to go and get a great beer. No? Well you should, because the Mohawk House is definitely a great spot to sample some very above average beers.

To call this place a beer bar would be a severe understatement. As others have said, the place is big and beautiful...with a rustic lodge feel to it. Everything about this place is inviting and has a very at home feel. The fire which is sometimes going in the foyer as you walk in is a very nice touch.

Yes, there is a "dining" area...there is a large dining room and smaller rooms you can reserve for parties, but i come here for the beer (plus you can order the whole menu at the bar).

The bar is huge and square in shape, with seating around three sides and the taps in the middle. Above the bar are large timber trusses from which iron and glass light fixtures hang. To the left of the bar is a large area with big tables that resembles a beer hall, with an area behind that for bands to set up. The place is just beautiful and obviously left an impression.

Ok, i know...what about the beers. With (30+) taps, you'll have no trouble finding something to like. There was a decent selection of stouts, ipas, belgians, all of which you can ask for a sample of before you buy. My session started with a Dogfish Aprihop, and quickly moved on to an Ommegang Gnomegang which was outstanding, Trois Pistoles, GF West coast ipa, a local stout out of PA which for the life of me i can't remember...but the hits just kept on coming. (i was even able to get the very last drops of KBS, so good) Everything i had was outstanding and the range of beers on tap was impressive, which is a testament to the ownership and how much they want to cater to the serious beer drinker.

I don't know how much more i can say about how great it is to drink here, other than to quickly say how genuinely nice and accommodating the staff is. If you're lucky enough to go when Maggie is tending bar...well, i'll be jealous.

If you're in the area and enjoy a good beer and a good time you need to check this place out. I'm sure you'll come away as impressed as i am.

Well there really is not one bad thing to say about this place. In my opinion it is the best craft beer bar in NJ, quite possibly one of the best I've ever been to in my life. Staff knows there stuff, beer selection is always great with new limited and seasonal beers Everytime I go in. I love that they do a lot with local breweries as well. A must stop when near Sparta NJ!

Ill just start by saying I love this place and it is my favorite place in the area to go too! The service is great and all of the bartenders know exactly what they are talking about and they all know their beers very well. They have happy hour every single day 2-6pm, with $2 off every draft beer which is great because all their beers at normal price are $6-$12. 50 taps and the selection is always amazing, different styles to keep everyone happy. They do get a lot of limited beers on tap and their bottle selection is also very nice. Overall a great place to go for any beer lover and if you are in the area it is deffinitly worth a trip!

50 taps here...and they typically only waste 2 or 3 on coors light, blue moon, etc. outstanding selection on any given day, really the best i've seen in NJ. the fact that they serve paddles of 4 five oz samples comes in very handy because they do an excellent job on the seasonals. they might have up to 10 pumpkin options in sept, 12 christmas beers in dec, etc. when i have an opportunity to cut out of the office early, this is my favorite spot at which to kill an hour before heading home to the family.
the only downside to this place for me is the food. its priced at the high end but the results are almost always just ok. the pizzas are boring, the tuna tartar is average. the burger is quite good though.
overall, this place ranks as my favorite beer destination in NJ.

A beautiful stone mansion with easily the best beer selection in north jersey. The space is grand with outside grounds and several rooms and spaces for private events but the highlight is the drafts. They are up to 42 taps now and have plans for 8 more. Great local craft beer representation with Ramstein High Point, Flying Fish, Cricket Hill, Brooklyn, Victory, Boaks, Weyerbacher and more.

The food is very good but we stick to the pub fare and usually hit the happy hour from 2-6. They have some great offers. You can flight their beers but the flights seem to be especially pricey.

Every time we visit we have a great time they just need to work on the details. They have great pizza, calamari, wings and mussels all half price for happy hour!

Two pet peeves please do not serve some of the finest beers available on a paper napkin, get some coasters already and the servers while attentive most still need a solid education in the beer basics and need to keep up with the ever changing drafts. While we have seen great improvements since we started visiting they have a way to go yet.

So, I’ve heard some things. Good things. In that corner of New Jersey where not much else happens beerwise. And that’s about all I needed to hear just blindly trudge out to Sparta looking to magically stumble onto it, which of course, I did…

Stone house looking place on a hill looking like someone would be living there. But no, ‘cause beer lives there. Enter, dodge reception, fake straight, veer right to the bar (I shouldn’t be able to fool anyone with that play). A-frame room, with a white angled ceiling to a point holding large crossbeams running along and across. Spinny fans from the center beam and single big round bulb copper looking drop lamps tracing the bar. Plank wood floorings, a sizable brick wall on the end, and the other walls painted deep burgundy over wood panel lowers here and into the room to the rear. Sunken spots throughout.

Large “U” shaped wide plank bar with a wood base and foot rest; seating for nearly 2 dozen on sturdy leather bound wood chairs set 3 sides around. In the center, a copper topped center bar island with 14 taps on a bar tower showing on the outer end and another with 8 on the back side. Tiered booze in between, wines displayed up front, house growlers behind the taps, and glass front cooler space below. Another tower of 12 on the barback wall, glassware shelving racks to both sides, and mounted above, long horizontal blackboards listing tap selections and ‘on deck’ & specials in colored chalk. A large ‘temperance’ sign sits mockingly atop prominently. Colorful retro signage, TV’s in the corner of the bar, mounted baby wall lamps and curtained windows. Something of a rear room back past the bar. First, a few long tables and 8 hightop roundies, and a small stage to the rear of the rear, fronting panel windows beneath a ‘prohibition’ sign. Raised wood plank ceiling back there with baby shade chandeliers & spinnys, and a little fireplace all bricky.

So, we’re here for lunch. Started with the tuna tartar taco trio (wonton crisp, seaweed salad, avocado puree, harissa mayo), served on a rack created for a taco trio if ever there was one. She said they looked disgusting (hey thanx, I’m only eating that), but she was wrong as they were in fact, quite good. And then I moved to the Asian grilled chicken breast salad (baby spinach, shitake, roasted pinenuts, scallion vinaigrette), served in an oddly shaped bowl. It was a killer salad; you know how I feel about pinenuts & scallions. She had them take the fish & chips down to a sandwich format, which she cited as being soggy and sad, like the clown. I violated her fries but avoided the carrot remoulade.

And drink. 34 taps (I’ve heard there are now 42), ½ of which are local/regional craft selections (Ramstein Double Platinum Blonde, Cricket Hill Belgian Dubbel, Weyerbacher Sixteen & PAPA, Victory Headwaters Pale Ale & Hop Devil IPA, Troegs Flying Mouflan, Brooklyn The Concoction, Blue Point Toxic Sludge, Ommegang 2011 Belgian Independence Day Saison & Hennepin, Southern Tier Mokah & Farmer’s Tan Imperial Pale Lager, Sam Adams Oak Aged Porter & Wee Heavy, Magic Hat Blind Faith, Allagash White). What remains is mostly craft afar (Founders Blushing Monk, Oskar Blues Dales Pale Ale, Avery Ellie’s Brown Ale, Salvation, The Reverend & Out of Bounds Stout, Firestone Walker Reserve Porter & Double Jack, Anderson Valley Brother David’s Double, Green Flash Hop Head Red, Lagunitas Lucky 13 Alt, Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale), with a handful of imports (De Ranke XX, Maredsous 8, Schneider Weisse, Guinness), and a crap mac (Coors Light).

I started with an Ommegang 2011 Belgian Independence Day Saison (for try) and then had a De Ranke XX (for tried and true). Hey, they do samplers of 4 on little baby paddles. So we will, collectively between the 2 of us; Maredsous 8 (does not suck), Firestone Reserve Porter (win), Sam Adams Wee Heavy (band aid awful), Sam Adams Oak Porter (better) Cricket Hill Dubbel (very good), Founders Blushing Monk (big berry smash but really good), Firestone Double Jack (on accident, but quite nice).

And with beer in hand, I went on walkabout. Through to the main dining room; a beautiful space with high vaulted ceilings and a wall climbing fireplace; stone with brick inlay. 2 dozen tables here and a loft to the rear with another 8 tables, plus private rooms of awesome (wine room & study; the latter an old screened in porch space renovated). Also, a rear garden room with upwards of a dozen tables, and out back, a dozen+ round tables and a small bar, looking over a pair of bocce courts where goodness happens.

Nice upscale place, built from nothing up. Probably too good for the likes of unshowered unkempt you, (but certainly not me). We don’t love the music they’re playing here, someone should be parking lot beaten for it. Seriously. Intentionally inconveniently located to me but worth the drive. I’ve had a few very nice meals, albethey pricey as fuck. Good beer things happen here. I like.

The Mohawk House is a beautiful slightly rustic / craftsman / colonial stone-faced restaurant just off Route 15 in Sparta. Soft lighting, fireplaces, exposed wood beams, and lots of wood all reminds me of an upscale ski-lodge. Certainly a comfortable place to spend an afternoon (30+ beer taps also helps!)

My wife took me for an afternoon of appetizers and drinks at the bar. Happy hour is 2-6 every day, with 1/2 price pizzas, mussels and wings, and $2 off draught beers. The tap selection is really nice, broad range of styles, and some hard-to-find selections. I opted for a paddle, with four 4-oz samples - Defiant Christmas, Kane IPA, Green Flash Double Stout and Rogue Chocolate Stout) followed by a second paddle (21st Amendment Fireside, Liefmans Oud Bruin, River Horse Oatmeal Stout and Left Hand Pepper Porter). Our bartender didn't write anything down, yet got each order perfect. I love being able to try so many different beers, and with the great selection, it's easy to find plenty to try.

We split a pizza, mussels, pulled pork sliders and a cheese plate. The mussels were the best of the bunch: simply sauteed in wine, garlic and leeks, and perfectly cooked tender and fresh. The cheese plate was really nice, with plenty of options to choose from for our three cheese. The sliders and pizza were o.k. ... nothing to complain about, but nothing amazing, though the sweet potato fries with the sliders were really, really good. The dining room dinner menu looked amazing... upscale and moderately expensive, but the descriptions were mouth-watering. Certainly a special occasion type dining experience, and we will have to return for such an occasion.

Overall, the bar & tavern menu are a great deal at happy hour, and by far the best beer selection in Sussex County, and on-par with or maybe even above the the best beer bars in North Jersey.

What a great selection of taps. 30 rotating kegs so you can go every week and there will be something new. Blushing Monk on tap last week and they even had KBS when it was released. Growlers to go is a nice perk too. Price can get a little steep especially when your getting a 10% stout. Prices range from $5 to $10 depending on your choice. Happy hour is definitely the way to go with $2 off all drafts. I've never had the food there but seeing some being served and reading the menu it looks nothing short of amazing. This is a must go spot in north Jersey.

The long, overdue trip to the Mohawk House.

So I have a good friend who frequents the Mohawk House about 1-2 times a week. He knows I like great beer and food and hounds me to get up there. Well, Saturday, I finally made it.

First, let me say that it took me about 50 minutes to get there. When I arrived I pulled up to a really crowed parking lot (in my opinion, always a good sign). I took a lady friend who I knew liked great food and beer as well. We were seated in the garden room and didn't mind the extra privacy we had. As we looked over the menu, we agreed that a plethora of appetizers would be more suited to out liking. We ended up getting the oysters, beef carpaccio, a flight of cheese, and the grilled octopus. All the portions where sized right and the selection of flavors where balanced perfectly.

As for the beer, I didn't get to drink as much as I like because of the far drive. But, I did have 2 KBS glasses and my date had OMMEGANG GNOMEGANG along with a KBS. The KBS paired very well with the seafood we had and the cheeses.

Overall I highly recommend this place to anybody into great beer and great food. This place was so worth the drive.

I THANK BRIAN FROM IDRINKGOODBEER.COM for getting me into this place!!

Great Taps, Nice atmosphere but the food and service was awful. Somewhat pricey on the beer and food. The happy hour will provide some savings and Sparta is a nice area. Stick with the tap brews and you'll do quite nicely. I live a half an hour away and wouldnt necessarily go out of my way, but if Im in the area would make it a point to stop off. Inside is quaint and charming farmhouse type with nice view. Rotating Tap Selection so you may get something different than what they have on their website.

So I crack open the most recent issue of the Ale Street News, flip to the NJ section, and lo and behold, a 'new' beer bar has opened in Sparta, Sussex County. Since I am 20min away and have been itching for a new place, of course I hit it with my wife the next evening (which was a saturday night).

The first impression as I pulled up was that of a beautiful, rustic lodge/farmhouse structure, but I was a little surprised to find valet parking greeting me at the door. This immediately did not leave me optimistic, but I later found out that valet parking only occurs on friday and saturday nights, simply out of necessity due to the crowds (which we witnessed first-hand), not due to the image typically associated with it.

Upon entering, we went straight to the bar area on the right, as the dining room on the left, complete with white linens and fireplaces, seemed quite fancy for the way we were dressed...and we were primarily concerned with the beer anyway. Upon entering the bar area, I was shocked by the large chalkboard staring back at me, about 32 taps strong, of some excellent and hard-to-find offerings, including Founders Backwoods Bastard, Stone Double Bastard, DFH Worldwide Stout, Sierra Nevada Estate, Boaks Wood Beanie, New Holland Imperial Hatter, Founders KBS, Troegs Mad Elf, Victory Yakima Twilight, La Chouffe, Duchesse de Bourgogne, Terrapin So Fresh So Green, Rogue John John Hazelnut, etc. Now, I'm a fan of the Coppermine, Tap Room, Andy's, etc, but I must admit that the draft list put some of theirs to shame. And after speaking with our waittress, who by the way was both beer-knowledgeable and super-friendly, we found out that Mohawk had only recently really stepped up their game in the beer arena, despite having been built about 5yrs ago, so it made the quality and selection available even more surprising. Wow. I guess I'm glad I picked up that copy of Ale Street.

The prices were reasonable ($5-6 range), and both sampler flights (either 4 or 6) and take-home growlers were available. As I mentioned earlier, the dining room was very chic, and the prices on the dining room menu reflected that ($$$$). However the bar menu was certainly reasonable ($$), and the food was outstanding: everything locally-made/grown to match the local beer/wine scene. Bratwurst, fish/chips, lobster/shortrib sliders, locally made cheese paddle, etc..it was all good, and it didn't break my wallet. I made it a point to get as much information about the ownership/mission/background of the place as possible, compliment them profusely, and say that we'd be back soon.

We did go back on tuesday, and I was able to meet Steve, the co-owner (with his wife) of the establishment. What a gentleman. After speaking at length for what seemed like an hour, he offered my wife and I complimentary desserts (which were fabulous), which I must say was much appreciated, as my wife had just had a rough day at the hospital, and it hit the spot. And some of the stories he had told me...like throwing out some macro beer distributors from his restaurant...showed me that he was indeed serious about making Mohawk a prime beer lovers' destination.

In a nutshell, I am so excited that FINALLY NJ has a beer bar that gets the beer/food quality balance right (see my other reviews), and I am even more excited that it is only 20min from me. Bravo, Mohawk House...get used to seeing my face, because you will be seeing it A LOT.

The bartenders at Cloverleaf Tavern in Caldwell, NJ have been bugging me to try this place and I trust those guys. I was on a trip to check out a liquor store in Budd Lake which I have declined to review since they are clearing stuff out to get ready to move. I'll return and see if my rating improves for them. Being disappointed I checked BeerFly and went to check out Burke's. It had an A+ but I have no idea what the one reviewer experienced. Maybe they changed things or had a secret area only he got into. Anyway, being even more disappointed I remembered what I was told about the Mohawk House for lunch and I'm damn glad I did.

The bar is to the left as you enter what looks like a stone Colonial-era tavern. It's pretty big and there's a large area where they have bands play. I was there during lunch on a very rainy Friday, so service wasn't quick to notice I was there, but they were pretty diligent once they did.

34 taps and only 3 of them are NASCAR beers! One had Blue Moon and the other Guinness so that left 29 taps with amazing beers. I had tasted most of the beers they had when I was there, but it was still an impressive selection. Stone's Russian Imperial Stout and Houblon Chouffe Doubelen IPA on tap! Glorious! They also had Three Philosophers, Old Rasputin, Lagunitas Lucky 13, Oskar Blues Gordon, Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale, DFH Palo Santo Marron, Franziskaner Weizen and Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest. I also remember seeing offerings from Avery Founders, Great Divide, Sierra Nevada, Ramstein and Chimay. From the update to the first review for this place (which is only a week or so before mine) it appears that they rotate their taps a lot.

For food I had the bratwurst. It was tasty enough, but I would have preferred a little more browning to add to the tooth. It had a nice snap though. The mustard they serve with it will clear out your sinuses; it must have horseradish or be made with Chinese mustard. It is also served with potato salad...I don't like potato salad but I ate this one...it's made with BACON! Everything's better with bacon. Scanning the rest of the menu they do have some typical pub fare, but they also have cheese platters and some higher cuisine. The burger is $8 unless you want cheese or something on top of it. Each topping is a dollar so a bacon cheeseburger will cost you $10.

I will definitely return and bring others with me...and hopefully a designated driver...so I can really delve into their tap selection. Maybe I can get one of my friends to play there with his band.

I passed by the Mohawk House several times and it looked like some of the homes we were building in Tewksbury or Essex Fells,N.J. Figured some day we'll go in and give it a try. Well we went in around 4 pm on a Friday afternoon this summer and was friendly greeted by the barkeeps. Plenty of seating in the bar area and with the scattered patrons it was nice and quiet. Found out that it was Happy Hour and that it included reduced prices on food and beer.
Half price stone oven pizzas, $5 appetizers like buffalo wings and mussels and $2 off a pint of beer. We were each given a beer menu that took some time reading since it was full of world class brews complete with styles and descriptions.
German, Belgium, and many from the U.S. are here for the taking. California, midwest, Penn., NY, Delaware and just one from NJ. I put in a plug for more local beers explaining that some great beers are made right here in N.J.
Overall the beer selection is great and the menu has lots to choose from. I was rather impressed and picked up a gift certificate for a graduating friend.

For those of us who live in the woods in NJ, it's good to have a place like this to go to once in a while, because you can only go to Krogh's and the Thirsty Moose so many times before you start to feel like you've "been there, done that".
This restaurant is located in town in Sparta, which is of course a nice area. It was built in maybe 2005 (so it's very new and very clean) primarily as a restaurant, but the bar area is quite large with room for a band to play on Fri/Sat nights. The food and drinks here are pricey, but also quite good. It is a very classy establishment. I will admit that my first experiences here with the draught list a few years ago were not so great. They used to have a very standard tap selection (Stella Artois, Guinness, Smithwick's, etc), but I am pleased to say that they have completely overhauled their beer selection. I was there on 4/30/2010, and the selection blew me away for a place in the middle of nowhere, NJ. At the time, they had Founder's KBS, Founders Double Trouble, Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale, Sierra Nevada 30th Anniversary Stout and tons of other stuff that you normally have to go to NYC to have on draught. At the time of this writing, the list on the website says that they have stuff from Stone, Victory, DFH, Flying Dog, Founders, Anderson Valley, Lagunitas, Ithaca, Terrapin, Boulder, Allagash, Ayiner, St Bernardus, Corsendonk and more on tap. The lines are clean and they do serve with proper glassware.

UPDATE I: I went here again on 8/22 (a Sunday afteroon) with my wife and had an extremely satisfying experience. We chose to do a beer sampler of 6 different beers since there were so many that I wanted. We were given probably about 6oz of each beer, all resting on a wooden paddle. We also did a cheese sampler where we chose between 3-4 different cheeses to complement our beer. The beers I chose were St. Berdardus abt 12, Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale, Great Divide Rumble IPA, Sierra Nevada Knightro ESB, Bear Republic Racer 5 and Brooklyn Buzz Bomb (all on draught). They also had a lot of other good stuff to choose from. We had nearly the entire place to ourselves, and the service was perfect. It was just a great way to spend an afternoon. The bill didn't hurt too badly either. The bottom line is the Mohawk House has a better draught selection than all of NJ and a lot of NYC, so Andy's, The Copper Mine and the Clover Leaf are about to be left behind in the dust.

UPDATE II: I have been a regular here for a while so I thought it necessary to provide another update. The Mohawk House now has 50 tap lines, nearly all dedicated to craft (there may be one or two for Coors/Bud or Yuengling). In a short amount of time, the Mohawk House has become NJ's craft beer mecca. They are always serving hard-to-get limited brews and also local stuff like Kane and Carton. They often hold fun brewery events here and there seems to be a beer crowd any night you go. When I went last night, it was just a regular Friday night (not an event), but I bumped into reps for several brewers and distributors. Basically, meeting fellow beer geeks to talk beer with comes easy here. Being a regular also has perks here. If you are lucky enough to be asked to join the Mohawk House Social Club, you'll be able to get happy hour prices at all times. This makes the check MUCH more agreeable.
By the way, MH is great in all seasons. There's a warm fireplace for winter and a large outdoor area (including bocce) for warmer months. It's family oriented, so go ahead and bring the baby (I always do). I can't say enough about how great this place is. Go and see for yourself! Just make sure you get there early before the parking lot fills up.
