Big Black Furry Creature from Mars

Appearance: Arrives pitch black with a modest tan head; some squiggly lacing lingers

Smell: Citrus and tropical fruit tempered by chocolate and caramel tones

Taste: The hops lurch forward, bringing pineapple and grapefruit tones with the malt adding chocolate and caramel in the mid-palate; nicely balanced through the finish and there is no hint of the high ABV

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I can't say enough about this beer; I find the charred malt clashes with the hops in many ABAs and I think this is the first one that I have had that doesn't go all roasty and ashy on me; the malts here are chocolate and caramel and they perfectly complement the citrus and tropical fruits in the hop bill; other brewers should take note of what Barrier has produced with this beer

Served in a tulip. Pours the color and clarity of cola with a loose, tan-colored head that dissipates into a slick. Nose reveals huge citrus hops aromas and a hint of pine - not much about the malt profile is evident from the aromas. Aromas in the nose coalesce nicely with a rich, roasty malt profile. Mouthfeel is light-medium in body with a lively carbonation. Overall, a very hop-forward expression of the style and much less malt-centric than any example of the style that I have tried to date. A pretty interesting beer.

A - Black, with a thick, fluffy mocha head that retains and laces very well.

Smell is pungent, bright and citrusy hops, slightly floral. Taste follows the nose, but it rounded out by a milk chocolate roast in the aftertaste.

Medium body, well carbonated, smooth. Lacks the overly resinous pine abrasiveness commonly found (at least to me) in others of the same style.

I was surprised how citrusy, tropical fruit forward this one was. Chocolate and slight roast flavors rounded it out at the end and the abv stayed well hidden. Although I'm not on-board with the style as a whole and the combination of flavors, this one was head and shoulders above every other Black IPA I've had, with the exception of Wookey Jack.

BBHFCM, the 11% black ipa that drinks so so smooth. pours black with nice tan head, smells of roasted malts with some hops coming through. Hops really come through in the taste, nice and citrusy, well balanced by the chocolatey roasted malts to make this ipa dark.
