Barrier Brewing Company
New York, United States
Notes: Barrier Money is an example of a brew that is demonstrably different from a previous incarnation. Contrast my 2016 review with current reviews. there should be an option to provide a second review. Possibly even separate the listing into two parts, Old Money and New Money. You lose historical information if a new review has to replace an older one.

Similar things occur elsewhere where different brews with similar branding are available at the same time. Carlsberg announed that it was improving (?) its Britain formula (previously "Possibly the best beer in the world". Labatt's Blue US is owned by FIFCO (and brewed at Molson) while Blue in Canada is owned by ABInbev. Do these taste the same? No guarantee. A similar situation exists for Modelo/Corona US (Constellation) and Mexico (ABInbev). There should be some thought as to a separation based on corporate ownership and formula variations.

Had this on tap at a small craft beer bar in Manhattan.

Didn't know anything about this brewery or the beer beforehand, but this one was a nice surprise. Loads of Citra hops don't hurt. A very solid beer.

The beer comes in a light hazy orange.

The aroma has a blast of Citra, pineapple, and citrus peel.

The flavor follows with huge citrus, a light mango, a really light white bready malt in the middle with a touch of herbal on the end. The beer is extremely clean drinking without much bitterness on the back

This IPA is a Citra bomb and easily one of the best IPAs brewed in New York.

Went to an excellent beer tasting event at Decicco's in Brewster, NY and found this beer to be an excellent surprise. After the ridiculously good Sip of Sunshine from Lawson's and Hill Farmstead's Double Citra, this was pretty soundly my third favorite of the dozen or so IPA's they were sampling.

Appearance: Standard IPA look here; golden yellow with tons of carbonation. My pour yielded a pretty sizable head all the way up to the brim of my 5-ounce tasting glass. Not as hazy many other East-Coast IPAs complexion, but certainly a few notches more opaque than completely see-through.

Nose: Brilliant dank and musty hop aromas up front followed by citrus and some spicy herb.

Taste: Manages to pack a wallop of hop flavors without being overly-aggressive or bitter. Everything in the nose makes an appearance. Just a fantastically complex and flavorful brew that drinks surprisingly easy.

Mouthfeel: Nice prickly carbonation that supports a medium-bodied mouthfeel. Finishes dry with some great lingering bitterness.

Overall: I was very impressed with this beer. I would purchase this all the time if I could find it more easily. A few days after the event, I went and purchased a growler of KBS and had to pick up some of this as well as soon as I saw it was still on tap. Well worth your time!

Had a glass at Top Hops in LES. It's a rich, hazy IPA with a pungent character. The hops are big and juicy with stacked grapefruit, tangerine, orange peel, and peach. Appropriately drinkable for a 7.3% West Coast style IPA. Go find yourself a pint, you won't regret it.

Literary experiment: instead of reviewing from notes, here are my notes:

barrier money

fucking hop juice
dank as shit

3.75 appearance: clear orange. decent retention. spotty lacing

5.0 smell: glorious citra aroma dank pungent little smokey some orange and melon. aroma only found in extremely fresh hopppy beer. keeping my nose to it throughout

4.5 taste: huge succulent hop flavor and heavy IBU keeping the 7% sweetness in check. malt backbone is bold and boozy, no subtle grain or airy bread: slick hot and sweet. that smokiness that really well done citra beers have cuts the sweet along with ample bitterness and layers and layers of fresh, pungent and citrusy hop goodness.

like less boozy (but still aggressive) seeking alpha with better, cleaner (and danker) hop flavor.

4.0 mouthfeel: full side of medium bodied. moderate carbonation. slick but with welcomely high bitterness and some juiciness. mild dryness in finish competing with the booze

4.75 overall: why do we sleep on barrier so much? this isnt the first utterly fantastic beer ive had from them.

not a trendy session ipa (a trend i love, by the by)... but i was in a pretty shitty mood when i got on the train and this was exactly the hop punch in the face i wanted when i overpaid the guy in grand central.

memorably excellent beer

This beer packs in a ton of pungent dank hop goodness! Fairly light in color, next to the aroma I would have expected a big hazy glass of OJ. Lots of grapefruit and floral notes in the aroma and taste. Body is bit thinner than I would have expected as well but it's honestly an interesting sensory trick drinking this beer. Tons of hop flavor packed into a lighter bodied beer.

Tasting notes from 05/27/17
Had on-tap at Barrier Brewing in Oceanside, CA

Appearance - Served up in a tall 10oz glass, hazy and straw yellow in color, with a mostly barren surface except a razor thin ring of suds around the edge of the glass. Fair lacing, with small spotting found here and there.

Smell - Aroma is equal parts dank and fruity; earth and pine met by citrus and a hint of pineapple.

Taste - Follows the nose. Strong, aggressive notes of citrus, pine upfront, then turns yeasty and fruity in the finish with touches of mango and pineapple. Black pepper spice. Aftertaste lingers with pith bitterness and a touch of passionfruit.

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with a fair amount of carbonation. Goes down well enough, but the Finish is dry and slightly chalky.

Overall - It packs a flavor punch, that's for sure. I cant believe Im saying this, but a bit of mellow, juicier character would do this beer some good. Or maybe not. Its rather unique as is, even if it doesn't quite line up with my preference.

Pours cloudy orange gold color with sediment floating around in it and a 2 finger foamy bright white head that was full of small bubbles, dissipating very slowly and leaving very good foamy lacing coating the sides. The head left foamy lace rings and looked just as good from the second half of the bottle.

Smells of fresh citrus fruit like a mix of tangerine, lemon zest, orange peel, pineapple, grapefruit, melon, fresh piney hops, light caramel, biscuit, hints of sweet malt, fresh floral hops and mild hoppy spices. Really fresh and great to inhale, it's like a wave of tropical and citrus fruit which is pungent yet soft and allows just enough malt to add a little balance. Zero sign of the ABV, it's masterfully hidden.

Tastes pretty much like it smells: fresh citrus fruit and tropical fruit start it off with a mix of tangerine, orange, lemon, pineapple, grapefruit, apricot, melon, fresh squeezed piney and citrus hops, light caramel, toasted wheat bread, graham cracker, fresh floral hops and mild hoppy spices including pepper and coriander. The bitterness is higher than I would like it to be, but there's more malt balance in the flavor which allows those dank, juicy hops to shine. Fresh and very well crafted, this Long Island bad boy seems like it came from San Diego.

Mouthfeel is buttery smooth with a light zesty feel that can't contain the bitterness through the mild carbonation. The citrus dominates the finish and it trails off spicy and clean with a little bit of grains, toffee and graham cracker sliding along with the citrus fruit as it fades.

Overall a damn good IPA, extremely easy to drink and fresh tasting, I need to visit the brewery since it's so close. The alcohol is completely hidden and I'd like to see the bitterness dialed down a notch, but even with the minor bitterness gripe I highly recommend this beer.
