I’d been loosely familiar with Barrier’s offerings prior to Superstorm Sandy, which caused $100,000 in damages to the brewery last fall. Fortunately, due in part to the help of its local brewery brethren, Barrier managed to get back on its feet incredibly quickly and was back to delivering kegs around the city about two months later.

During the past few months I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything I’ve had from Barrier, from its Unimperial IPA, to Evil Giant IPA and Ruckus IPA, all of which shared substantially more of a west coast flavor profile than I’ve come to expect from my local east coast breweries.

In a similar vein, Money is a game-changer in my book, and finally announces to the world that yes, a New York brewer can make a world-class, hopped-to-heaven India Pale Ale. In fairness, Peekskill – who many now recognize as doing the best beer work in the State of New York at the moment – has a couple of terrific IPAs under its belt as well, but I think Money tops Eastern Standard.

Appearance: Beautiful, classic IPA-orange.

Smell: Huge citrus aroma; calls to mind the best-of-best when it comes to Citra beasts, including Zombie Dust.

Taste: This is a big boy IPA with a massive citrusy/tropical/spicy flavor due to what I initially thought might have been Riwaka, Motueka, or Citra/Simcoe, but I thought it might have been the former due to the heavy dose of tropical notes. However, Barrier later confirmed to me that the hops are a combination of Amarillo, Citra, Cascade and Simcoe.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full-bodied, spicy, piney.

Overall: As mentioned at the beginning, it’s incredibly refreshing to see an east coast brewer brew an IPA that not only hangs with its west coast compatriots, but in many cases exceeds them. While there are several challengers to the throne, at this point in time I feel comfortable saying this is the best single IPA being brewed in New York State right now.

A delicious, full flavored IPA. Juicy with a hop-filled aroma and finish. Served in a tulip glass on draft. Will be looking for this one again for sure!

Awesome beer, hands down the best IPA I've had from a LI brewery. And I live on LI and have had all the "best". Tastes like a Grimm or Other HalfIPA

Super citrusy nose. Kind of like 3 Floyds Zombie Dust, but with a hoppier finish. Delicious

I've been drinking this beer since it's original rendition, about 2 years ago. Since then, the recipe has changed once or twice. It's about time I give this bad boy a review.

A: Beautiful dark yellow-strawish color with a nice lacing around the edges. Transparent as transparent can be.

S: Loads of delicious citrus, pine and grapefruit.

T: Here is where the beer excels and soars above its competition. Holy crap. Tons of citrus, pine, grapefruit. Good malt backbone. This is what holy water should taste like.

M: Medium bodied, long lasting but not overpowering bitterness that lingers on the tongue in a very pleasant way.

O: By far the best IPA being produced in New York to date. This baby can compete with it's west coast counterparts, and probably exceeds many of them. Barrier is a solid brewery, producing extraordinary IPA's like Money. This beer comes and goes so quick, but luckily I live within 10 mins of the brewery and always make sure to get a few growlers when it's back on the tap line. The brewery just expanded it's tap room as well, and made a new bar with ~10 beers on tap per day (rotating daily). Barrier is stepping it's game up and I don't doubt for a second will be one of the top breweries of 2014 if they get their distribution up and bottling in full effect.

In the end, ITS MONEY BABY.
