I’d been loosely familiar with Barrier’s offerings prior to Superstorm Sandy, which caused $100,000 in damages to the brewery last fall. Fortunately, due in part to the help of its local brewery brethren, Barrier managed to get back on its feet incredibly quickly and was back to delivering kegs around the city about two months later.

During the past few months I’ve enjoyed pretty much everything I’ve had from Barrier, from its Unimperial IPA, to Evil Giant IPA and Ruckus IPA, all of which shared substantially more of a west coast flavor profile than I’ve come to expect from my local east coast breweries.

In a similar vein, Money is a game-changer in my book, and finally announces to the world that yes, a New York brewer can make a world-class, hopped-to-heaven India Pale Ale. In fairness, Peekskill – who many now recognize as doing the best beer work in the State of New York at the moment – has a couple of terrific IPAs under its belt as well, but I think Money tops Eastern Standard.

Appearance: Beautiful, classic IPA-orange.

Smell: Huge citrus aroma; calls to mind the best-of-best when it comes to Citra beasts, including Zombie Dust.

Taste: This is a big boy IPA with a massive citrusy/tropical/spicy flavor due to what I initially thought might have been Riwaka, Motueka, or Citra/Simcoe, but I thought it might have been the former due to the heavy dose of tropical notes. However, Barrier later confirmed to me that the hops are a combination of Amarillo, Citra, Cascade and Simcoe.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, full-bodied, spicy, piney.

Overall: As mentioned at the beginning, it’s incredibly refreshing to see an east coast brewer brew an IPA that not only hangs with its west coast compatriots, but in many cases exceeds them. While there are several challengers to the throne, at this point in time I feel comfortable saying this is the best single IPA being brewed in New York State right now.

Poured a light brass hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured resinous aromas of pepper and tropical fruit.

The taste consisted of a balmy hop spice atop a grainy light caramel malt. The hops were assertive and prickly with elements of apricot, pineapple and pepper.

The mouthfeel was full and satisfying.

Overall a full flavored hop forward hefty IPA.
