Not sure why a Massachusetts brewery made a Minnesota-specific beer, but it caught my attention. Tasted 22 November 2014.

Pours black and thick, just a hint of brown at the edges. Just a thin layer of head, gone pretty quick, and only a few small islands of lacing.

Smell is lovely. Rich, sweet, and robust. Chocolate, plums, and sweet bourbon. Varied, deep, and very inviting.

Taste is a little heavy on the alcohol and bourbon. Those sharp elements dominate more than I'd like them to. There's plenty of that richness and sweetness that I picked up in the nose, but it's hiding beneath things I don't like.

Feel is quite good. Heavy and chewy, with low fluffy carbonation.

This beer is a mixed bag. It's just too big to be really tasty, and the barrel-aging accentuates that. A case of "less would be more".

22oz bottle from Justdoit1234 (thanks man!). Bottled 9/23/14. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours jet black with a finger and a half khaki head. Some nice legs on the side of the glass as I swirl it around but almost no lace whatsoever.

Smells of bourbon, roast malts, cocoa, light vanilla, charred oak, dark fruit and a a distinct whiff of alcohol.

Flavors of dark chocolate, bourbon, dark fruit skins, coffee, burnt caramel, vanilla tinged charred oak, earthy toasted grains, a pronounced herbal bitterness and a healthy dollop of booze. The barrel sweetness blends well with the base stout and the alcohol is no more apparent than the non barrel aged version. A big and bold beer to be sure but it goes down smooth.

Viscious, heavy body with moderate carbonation. Finishes bittersweet with cocoa, bourbon, darkened malts and caramel.

Itasca Loonidragon may not be the epiphany that I was hoping for from a barrel aged Blaecorn Unidragon but it is still outstanding. The added body and sweetness of this variant make it a pleasure to drink. I hope Clown Shoes graces Georgia with our own special treat at some point.

Day of release for Minnesota Only

22oz bomber poured into a Bent Paddle sniffer.

Appearance is dark as night with a half finger light khakis head that diminishes into a cling to the edge of the glass. While I move the glass it does not stick to the sides.

Aroma is slight bourbon, vanilla, licorice, and oak with dark fruits providing a faint sweetness.

Taste is oak sweetness up front. Sweetness reminds me of vanilla with faint chocolate and raisins instead of dark fruits. Very mild bitterness that reminds me faintly of coffee. Hides the 14.5% ABV extremely well!

Mouthful is 4.5/5 for a velvety smooth texture very light. I mean surprisingly low viscosity.

Overall. We know this is simply a BA version of Blaecorn. But it's good. Solid all the way through. Clown shoes does not disappoint.

I'd rate it a 4.6/5

This beer pours a jet black color with a thin brown head. The head fades slowly, leaving a thick curtain of lace.

I detect a dominant vanilla aroma with hints of prune, fig, and raisin. Bourbon is present as well. Maybe a very subtle coffee aroma, but only slightly.

This beer tastes like it smells. I can taste a mild caramel as well.

This beer is surprisingly smooth for its high alcohol content. It warms the throat on the way down reminding me that it isn't a beer to take lightly. It leaves a fig like aftertaste.

This beer wouldn't make a great session beer due to the high alcohol content.

Overall, this beer is great. It has a nice favor, but it isn't overwhelming. The alcohol could become an issue, but with only 22 ounces, it's not a problem. Great beer! Thanks Sarah For the hookup.

A-pours a thin black color with a fresh 1 finger mocha color head that recedes to a fresh head thru-out a small amount of lacing
S-light bourbon with vanilla ,wood, chocolate, coffee and wood
T-it follows the nose with slight bourbon taste mixed with some dark fruit. vanilla bean and mocha flavors all mixed in with roasted malts and oak would have like a bit more BA
M-velvet mouthfeel but on the thin side for an IS ,as this warms more BA and vanilla come thru its hot right now but @14.5ABV it is still well hidden
O-CS never dissapoints this is a very good BBA stout i bought 2 so will age 1

Pours dark black with a less than one finger khaki head. the aroma has dark roasted malt, chocolate, and Bourbon.

Has a nice sweet flavor, balanced with some bitterness. There is chocolate, dark roasted malt, Bourbon, dark fruit, and a small amount of black licorice. The alcohol is somewhat detectable, but not as much as it would have been if I drank this right away. A few months of resting helped mellow this out nicely.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. I'm glad I had a chance to try this, and look forward to drinking a few more bottles that I have set aside.

A bottle of beer with one of my favorite places on earth in the art, toss it in a barrel, put some Monster Manual baddie in the mix…it’s like they read my mind. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife…we have some history with Itasca State Park!

The pour is medusa hair black with a rollicking head for a big, bourbony stout. Smells like my ideal bathwater: bourbon, sweet malts, chocolate. All quality. Like.

Itasca Loonidragon has a cloak of bourbon-ness draped over its shoulders. Long trail of bourbon strafes the throat & mouth, backed with the standard helping of vanilla that dominates. Mid-palate the sweetness of the malts asserts itself, the chocolate arrives in force, & alcohol begins its slow scramble of my brain pan. Woozy lumber lights up the finish, but let’s be honest, this is all about the bourbon spirits. It took three attempts to type that last word. I think I’m drunk already. But hey, I’d drink more of this, it’s growing on me quickly.

I am pleased. This is a bourbon-soaked, alcohol-riddled, malt-bomb of a beer with a Bruce Lee ass-kicking label. Happy to have met you, Loonidragon. Can I call you It? Very good beer.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 9/23/2014. Pours dense pitch black color with a 1-2 finger dense and rocky tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, toffee, caramel, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, molasses, light licorice/dark fruit, light smoke/char, and oak/roasted earthiness. Touch of booziness, but really minimal. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, toffee, caramel, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, molasses, light licorice/dark fruit, light smoke/char, and oak/roasted earthiness. Light-moderate roasted bitterness and bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, vanilla, toffee, caramel, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, molasses, and oak/roasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and oak spiciness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitter roast and oak spice as well. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full body; with a very smooth, creamy/silky, and lightly sticky/chalky balanced mouthfeel that is awesome. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a light warmth lingering after the finish. Overall this is an incredible barrel aged Russian imperial stout! All around fantastic complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roasted malt and bourbon barrel flavors; and dangerous smooth and easy to sip on for the huge ABV. A really amazing offering.
