Right from the time I opened this and into the glass, there was a look of Bavarian Beer. I was getting excited. Something in the touch of Germany.
But there was not aroma, nose or anything that gave me the feeling of Germany.

The initial taste was nice, not very malty, which did surprise me, no real hops to talk about which is what I expected.

Things went ok, until the aftertaste. I picked up a bit of a metallic or funkiness that offset the initial tastes and sips. If I could have stopped the aftertaste, I might have given this one a better rating

They call this a "Bavarian Style IPA". Canned on 10/25/17. 16oz can poured into a tulip. Pours amber with some clarity to it; small off-white head that falls leaving great retention and sticky lacing. The aromas are subtle and mild. Hints of caramel and spruce. Lots of malts. Mild hints of citrus. The flavors are very clean and crisp. The bitterness is on the lower side. Hints of caramel and pine. Mild hints of citrus in the mix. Malts do their thing. Alcohol goes unnoticed. Mouthfeel is very nice. It's medium-bodied with moderate to active carbonation. It's fluffy, smooth and fun to drink.

This is a solid brew. It's like a "hoppy amber", "hoppy red ale" or a "Red IPA". It's not an intense or flashy brew, which really works for it. It's very clean, crisp and refreshing. The craftsmanship is on point. It's fitting for this time of year.

"Ever felt left out? Mistreated? Alone? Well, screw tuat! Anyone who wants to can hang out with us (as long as you don't mind the occasional snowball to the face). Reindeer Games is crafted with German and American hops and malts, including Bavarian Red X. Winter, here we come, baby!" Brewed in the style of an American Imperial India Pale Ale, available in 22 oz. bottles and limited draft as a one-off winter release.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a tulip glass. Served above 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy cream head of a caramel cream color over a moderately hazy caramel body with soft, relaxed carbonation and little sediment. Retention is very good and lacing is light and spotty. 4

(Smell) Fruity, juicy tropical and delicate pine hops forward atop a smooth malt body of biscuity caramel, buttery toffee and sweet pale malt. Reserved aromatic bitterness, but a nice balance of malt and hops overall. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Malt flavors of toasted bread, caramel grains, light ethanol. Little hop flavor but more dominant hop bitterness, delicate fruit and pine hop profile. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is smooth, lightly syrupy, medium grainy, mildly dry. Carbonation is light, generating a moderate frothiness and a lightly crisp finish. Body is shy of medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly grainy and earthy bitter over sweet. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters to note. 3.5

(Overall) I was a bit underwhelmed by the hop profile in this beer, but found the malt base satisfying with a nice German spin, very smooth and highly drinkable. This might be a bit off-the-map for an American Double IPA, or even a standard IPA for that matter, but it's a decent beer. If it comes around again, I'll have to get to it a bit sooner than summer. My bad. 3.5

Poured into pint, and it's a clear rusty amber color, with some carbonation visible, as well as a creamy off-white head. Lacing cakes the sides.
Smells like toasty malts like pretzel bread. Hops hide back and are merely a hint.
Now the hops jump forth upon tasting this, but they're still held to a limit by the same bready malt backbone. Tasty up front, then some interesting earth.
The beer starts fairly sweet, but ends up more bitter/mint, then heads toward some mineral.
Mouthfeel is creamy and medium, with a bite.
Overall this is decent winter sipping as far as big ipa's go, although
a better alternative along similar malty lines would be Celebration IPA.

Poured into a 13 oz Alchemist Teku glass canned on 10/25/17 and 7% ABV now. Pours a very dark ruby red, with a 2 plus off white head that leaves thick consistent streaks of lace.

Smell is caramel, toffee, tangerine, biscuit, and a little pine.

Taste follows very malty caramel, biscuit, toffee, tangerine, and pine.

Mouthfeel is a big medium, moderate life, not dry, and drinks bigger than its 7% ABV but goes down rather easy.

Overall having IPA on this is strange for sure and will probably upset some, but it is different and pleasant in my opinion.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 11/13/2014. Pours slightly hazy reddish copper color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some light streaming carbonation. Aromas of tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, herbal, floral, grass, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with good strength. Taste of tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, pine, herbal, floral, grass, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness. Fair amount of earthy pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, peach, pineapple, mango, lemon/orange zest, pine, caramel, toasted bread, and floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, moderately crisp/sticky, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice red DIPA. All around great balance, robustness, and complexity of juicy citrus/tropical hops and moderate dark/bready malt sweetness; and very smooth and crisp to drink for the ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

A: poured into a tulip to a nice red topped by a two and a half finger dense light tan head that retains well and leaves excellent lacing
S: smells of herbal, slightly cirtusy hops and a slight earthy malt aroma
T: taste is earthy and a little spicy with some citrusy and herbal hops. Malt provides good balance with some bready flavors and caramel sweetness. swallow is more spicyness, herbal hops, pine and a little tropical fruit
M: medium in the mouth with soft but adequate carbonation and a semidry finish. hop oils do stick around but this beer still dries a little
O: This beer is pretty solid. Hop flavors abound and there is a nice malt backbone as well. This beer has good complexity as well. Overall, if you like hoppy beers this is definitely one to try.

Bottled On 11/13/14

A: Pours a dark ruby color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a decent cap that leaves some nice lacing

S: Nice and fruity with a light malty sweetness up front. A bit of citrus and earthiness as well. Very well-balanced

T: Starts off with a bit of the fruitiness and light sweetness and then goes into some earthy tones including some woodiness. Citrus takes a back seat, but goes along with the fruitiness. Bitterness comes on towards the finish

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Definitely has a little bite

O: A very interesting IPA with great balance. Definitely more on the earthy side in terms of the hoppiness, with a nice fruit and citrus background. Quite easy to drink and is a different take on an IPA

Bottled on 11/13/14. 10 days old.

A: Pours a deep, dark reddish-brown. Tall, frothy light brown head. Good head retention as it sticks around quite well. Doesn't stick to the glass quite a swell, with some minimal splotchy lacing.

S: Initial hoppy aroma but not sharp and in-your-face like I've come to expect. Lots of herbal and spicy, piney hops. Lightly floral. Lots of nice grainy malt.

T: Yup, more of the same. Strong herbal hops, reminds me of a big hoppy red in fact. Some chewy pine in there but it's mostly a herbal hop bomb. Grainy, bready malt in the finish. Mild wave of bitterness in there but it's mainly just the strong hop flavor. Lingering grainy, herbal hoppiness between sips.

M: Medium bodied, very grainy and sharp.

O: Huh, I was expecting a normal IPA but this is closer to a hoppy red. Traditional hoppy red flavors but stronger and sharper. A red IPA? Amber IPA? AIPA? Too close to APA. RIPA would be too close to Rice IPA. Huh, gonna have to put some thought into this one. A tasty and unique version of a traditional red. Or IPA. Or something.
