Crasher In The RyeCrasher In The Rye

Brewed by:
Clown Shoes
Massachusetts, United States

Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.50%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
Ahhh, what better smell is there than chupacabras, defeated, burning in a field of rye? Ummm, perhaps the complex aromatics of Crasher in the Rye? Texas oak smoked malt, from Blacklards Malt Company, as well as a touch of rye malt, complement the roasted bittersweet care of the brew. Aged 100% in Rye and Bourbon barrels.

If satan were to use a beer to sweeten the pot for your soul, this would be the beer.

Super dark brew, bordering on pure black, topped by a dark tan head. Great head size, impressive retention, and tons of lacing.

Intense and sweet aroma! It's tough to tell where the yeast ends and the barrel begins. Strong notes of cola, banana, figs, bourbon, and cream.

Flavor follows, albeit with an excellent stout base. Sweet bourbon, coconut, overripe dark fruit, and banana; roasty chocolate; oak; smokey finish.

Thick and chewy stout; outstanding, lively mouthfeel; very full. Virtually no heat from a massive brew.

This seems to be another Vampire Slayer BA variant, based on the name and the smokey kiss on the finish. It's also another BA stout that Clown Shoes hits out of the park. Best of the BA stouts? No. Very, very good, with an outstanding stout base beer? Absolutely.

22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 15.99. Bottled 3/17/15. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours a dark chocolate brown, almost black with a finger and a half of milky tan head. The foam recedes to a thin haze, leaving a few small islands of lace.

Sweet nose with lots of sugar, lactose and vanilla-tinged barrel up font. There is a berry-like sweetness, some cocoa and a hint of smoke. Very nice.

Upon first sip a pleasing blend of barreled spirits, mild smoke and semi spicy notes of rye greet my palate. Whiskey, vanilla, red berries, soft peat, oak, rolled oats, lactose, chocolate, brown sugar and a nice alcohol presence. Such an interesting blend of everything that went into this- from both types of barrel, both the smoked and rye malts, the lactose and the oats. It is all perceptible and works well together.

Smooth, creamy, medium full body with supple carbonation. Finishes sweet with whiskey, vanilla, faint smoke, mild spice and lactose.

Clown Shoes has what appears to be a whole new stout recipe and yet another barrel aged hit with Crasher in the Rye. It brings that smoked malt I've enjoyed in Undead Party Crasher, Porcine Unidragon and The Good The Bad & The Unidragon but tosses in oatmeal and lactose which contributes to a nice creamy feel. The blend of rye whiskey and bourbon creates a beautifully sweet counterpoint to the smoked, roasted and rye malts. Even my wife, who is not at all a fan of barrel aged beers, really liked this. Awesome stuff that is well worth a try.

From the 650 ml. bottle dated 03/17/15. Sampled on May 30, 2015.

Oily black pour with a modest but long lasting. soft tan head.

Aroma of cooked oatmeal, dark malts, yeast, sweetness, coffee (maybe the oatmeal), and rye grain.

Medium, creamy body.

The taste has a moderately sweet and oatmeal stout flavor with less of the grain and a modest bitterness at the finish. Overall quite nice.

Decided to open one of these as my hockey beer for the Red Wings game, so I'm not going to do a full review. However, if you like BA stouts with buttery toffee notes on the front a dry non-cloying finish, I would recommend this beer. Clown Shoes is rapidly going from a name I had never heard of to a brand I seek out. This goes for more than just their big stouts. Now if only we can get Ohio to change the ABV law so we can see some Blaecorn around here. Go Clown Shoes and Go Wings!

A: The beer is close to being jet black in color—when held up to a bright light only traces of dark red are visible near the corner of the glass. It poured with a short tan head that died down, leaving a collar around the edge of the glass and wispy lacing on the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of rye whiskey are present in the nose along with some notes of butterscotch.
T: The taste is a little sweet and has flavors of butterscotch, rye bourbon, and vanilla. The alcohol is very well hidden.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The rye and bourbon lends some warming to the mouthfeel.
O: This beer is quite drinkable for a 11.5% abv stout and the butters it's aromas and flavors are quite unique.

Rye. Fucking rye. It’s like my kryptonite. You know, if kryptonite were delicious, & I couldn’t stop rooting around for it. So I buy this. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife.

The pour is black. It’s almost like it’s a stout or something. Very chocolatey in the nose; otherwise surprisingly faint.

Crasher in the Rye: the smell is beige carpet, the taste is rolling around on it naked. The rye comes out of the barrel doing at least Mach 3: huge peppery, spicy rye notes with a jolt of alcohol & a numbing, drying, suck-your-soul-dry amount of splintered wood. Lurking underneath that goodness is a milk stout, if one cares to look, lactose, smooth, oaty if that’s a thing except it’s not because I wouldn’t have thought about it if it weren’t on the label. Alcohol slinks in & blows me a kiss. Smoother than Bill Clinton at 1:30 AM. And good lord, I could drink this until I got in my car to go find a field of rye, crashed my car into it, & started munching. Actually not a bad idea.

Clown Shoes has made a bunch of stuff that’s drifted between good & really good, but this, this, this, this kicks the crap out of all of it. Just missing that intangible that allows it to reach my personal hall of fame, but only by a chest hair. One excellent beer.

22 ounce bottle - $13.99 at Lucky's Beverage World in Woodstock, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a deep black body crowned with a thick, plush, khaki-hued head.

Smell: A delightfully inviting, richly sweet-scented aroma with notes of milk chocolate, caramel, vanilla, toasted oak and chary roast.

Taste: With a sweet conjoining of chocolate and buttery, nutty caramel sauce, touches of fruit as well as vanilla, toasted sugars, roasted malts, rye whiskey and creamy lactose, it's a tasty treat. Finishes sweet, warming.

Mouthfeel: Fullish body. Medium carbonation. Coating, creamy, luscious mouthfeel.

Overall: I dig beers like this. I like supporting them.

I've seen comparisons to Velvet Merkin. As someone who considers FW his favorite brewery, I can say without a doubt that this is better than Velvet Merkin.

Very malty but good beer. Plenty of mouth feel, from the rye I assume. Sweet finish. I had already had quite a few when I tried this so the ABV really finished my evening. I need to try this again as a single beer for a nice crisp fall day a few months from now.

If you like milk stouts this is great. Its got a medium light mouth feel, you can definitely taste the rye, oatmeal, and hints of chocolate. This is the second best beer I have had from Clown Shoes... Awesome beer.
