Notes: When easy encounters became close calls, The Artist new better than to wait for the next close call to be his final hour. He needed an ace in the hole, a fail safe option tokeep danger at arms length. What he got was A Fistful of Unidragon.

This Russian Imperial Stout slightly alters Blaecorn Unidragon with Mesquite-smoked malts, adding to the rich, complex flavors that our classic Russian Imperial Stout traditionally encompasses. Aged in Bourbon barrels, A Fistful of Unidragon blends in a touch of Bourbon sweetness to layer over the array of flavors on display in this full-bodied stout.

Bottled 15March2016
Poured into a tulip glass – deep, murky black with minimal head and scant effervescence. Smells with strong vanilla, bourbon notes mingled with the classic Unidragon leather, cocoa and barnyard. Taste is sweet malts forward, cocoa, smoke and leather with transition to vanilla and bourbon notes – woody, wet burlap and barnyard notes with a very faint bitter counterpoint as final notes. Alcohol well hidden – Thick and a bit syrupy in texture with a somewhat tacky residue – not unpleasant – and pretty typical for a stout of this body.
Overall, this is a tasty bourbon barrel stout – all the attributes of Unidragon that I love, coupled with the bourbon notes. I came across this gem at a liquor store in Killeen TX – I had no idea that it had been discontinued – I’ll have to go back and stock up on this gem – I imagine cellaring will only improve this quality, complex stout.

$ 16.11 (Including tax)/bomber = $ 0.732/oz at Central Market, Alamo Heights, TX
Bottled 03/15/16 at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter, allowed to warm to 50 degrees
Aroma – roasted malt, brown sugar
Head small (Maximum two cm, aggressive pour), light brown, creamy, diminishing to a two mm ring and thin layer
Lacing – mostly none. A total of two tiny islands of tiny bubbles
Body – dark brown/black, opaque
Flavor – roasted malt, chocolate, not really any bourbon, starts and ends slightly sweet. A delayed alcohol hit dimly glows in the stomach, yielding only a glimmer of heat.
Palate – full, almost creamy, lively carbonation

Passable but not desirable. An average RIS at best, certainly not worth the price.

Poured from 22 oz. bomber.

A: Pitch black. About as dark as it could be. 3/4 finger mocha head. Bubbles form atop the middle of the pillow-y head. This one looks very nice in the glass. Not that the beer is bad by any means, but the appearance is definitely it's strongest attribute.

S: First things first: Sticky, burnt sugar. Barrel is definitely there - bourbon and oak are present. Dark roast and marshmallow. Above all else, I come back to the sweetness - a bread-y sweetness. Think Hawaiian sweet roll; really. As the beer warms (20 minutes in)...i pick up a subtle smokiness.

N: The nose didn't lie. Sweetness hits first - but it's more vanilla on the palate. Bourbon follows. The finish is a nice bitter. Really, the taste is not as complex as the nose. Sweet. Bourbon. Bitter.

M: Medium bodied, I guess. Could stand to be fuller. Not NEAR as good as the appearance led me to believe it would be. Nothing special.

O: A "good" BA stout. Another nice BA offering from a brewery who MUST have the largest barrel room in existence. Good beer to pick up and enjoy if you're in Texas. Not a must have if you're out of state.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass.

Appearance is deep black in color with verry little head that congregates around the edges.

Smell is bourbon and vanilla with some chocolate malt.

Taste is a lot of milk chocolate up front with the bourbon coming through on the finish (moderate heat). A nice roasted malt flavor is prevalent throughout. There are some woody, charcoal and vanilla notes as well. The sweetness is a little much for me. The bitterness starts out fairly low but increases as it warms.

Mouth feel is thick and syrupy (slightly grainy) with a little heat on the end. The carbonation is fairly low/flat but works well throughout.

Overall this is a solid barrel aged offering from Clown Shoes. I like that they brew state specific beers, but I wish this one was a little less sweet with better balance. As it warms, the balance improves with some roasted and smoky notes coming through. This beer has a lot of good flavors, but they seem slightly disjointed.

Big foamy head and thick black body on this hefty BBA stout...

Smell of sweet vanilla and roasted malts; bourbon very present but not overwhelming.

Taste is chocolate and vanilla, some oak and closes with bitter roasted flavor a.. Almost like a burnt vanilla latte. Pretty good though

Feel is thick and oily, just how I like it, with a long sticky finish. This is a great beer and I'm once again impressed with clown shoes barrel aged offerings.

From the tall boy can in a snifter. This monster brew from the
Clown Folk pours a rich and decadent coal black with a very nice
head of khaki foam that settles to a thick ring, light dusty layer,
and displays some mighty fine lacing. Nose of bourbon, vanilla,
dark cocoa, booze, oak, and char. Flavors nail it! Bourbon; big and
expressive with rich vanilla and brown sugar over an assertive
oak note. Cocoa and brulee mingle nicely with black strap
molasses, roast, and char along with touches of dark fruit,
brulee, and faint smoke. Excellent mouth feel; full
body, smooth, rich, warming, medium light
carbonation that supplies lift, and a rich
warming finish that is lightly dry.

Overall, what would you expect from Clown Shoes.....boring?

More excellence as always!

Picked up a 16oz can for $8.99, 2019 edition. This beer was not good. The burnt aftertaste was too harsh and offensive. I split the can 4 ways and we all ended up drain pouring after two sips. I won’t buy from this brewery again.

The beer pours a very nice and creamy khaki brown head that dissipates at a moderate pace. The beer itself is a dark chocolate brown with a hint of coffee black to it.

The smell is pretty good. The smell upfront is a bitter dark cocoa alongside a light bourbon and vanilla. The char is fairly light and comes in the finish with a slight booze note to it.

The taste is absolutely fantastic. It has as variety of notes that stand put but isn't overly intense. It's actually very well balanced. The bourbon note comes in upfront with the vanilla and charred wood notes following it almost immediately. The beer notes such as the dark bitter cocoa follow but are masked by the barrel aged notes.

The feel is good. It has a heavy but slightly thin body with slightly bubbly carbonation.

Overall, this is a pretty good beer. It isn't an intensely flavored RIS but rather a traditional one that has just been barrel aged.

Black in color, small tan head, wisps of lace.
Aroma of chocolate and coffee.
Dark chocolate taste, espresso. Late hit of bourbon.
A nice beer, without the marshmallow, oreos, etc that get put into stouts now.
