Very Good
Notes: Crunkle Sam, tired of being a mer anomaly as a most refreshing summertime Barleywine Ale, targeted a German beer style and bastardized it. He had us brew a traditional Kolsch, but made us add all natural mango flavor. Warning: This beer is NOT Reinheitsgebot!

Clown Shoes Beer "Mangö American Kölsch"
12 fl.oz. can, coded "pkg 04/08/19"
$2 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: Although they've used the term Kölsch at least they've added the word American to it, and while not on the label itself, they have clearly states that this is a bastardized version of a German Kölsch. I appreciate that. So, the beer, it's got a clear dark golden body beneath a short cap of creamy white foam. It's actually got fingerprint-through-the-glass clarity! I find the mango in the aroma, and although it's not that bright, and is mixed with a little bit of that 'entering a candleshop aroma', it's pretty good. It's clean and inviting. The flavor works in the same way. There's some mango to it but then there's also some lightly grainy malt. I'm not finding hops but I wouldn't really expect to, and I certainly can't taste the fruity yeastiness with the mango flavoring there. It's not that bitter, somewhere around 20 to 25 IBUs, and that's enough to perfectly balance it. I'm glad they didn't over-do the mango, it seems exactly right on to me. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and gently crisp and then smooth. So, no real surprises here other than that it's done better than you or I might have thought it would be. If you're a fan of mango you could probably drink this all year 'round, but I'd reserve it as a summer beer.

Haven't had many from Clown Shoes, but this one has to be one of their best...

A very light and clear amber colored brew with light foam and no lacing, to match the light scent of mango and hops that meets your nose. The carbonation is light as well, but that were all this "lightness" ends. The taste is so smooth, so crisp, and blended well between hops, malt, and the mango flavor. I have to admit, the writing on the can made me pause thinking this was light a flavored cooler, but from Clown Shoes I should always think different. A great surprise from one of those brewers I always keep an eye out for.

Mangö has a very thick, off-white head, a clear, slightly bubbly, golden appearance, with some glass lacing. The aroma is of subtle mango, with some pale malts. Taste is similar, with noticeable, yet pleasant hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is light to medium, and Mangö finishes pretty crisp and refreshing. RJT

Decent bar poured head initially but it dies off completely leaving no lace. Clear, darker gold color.

The smell is lightly fruity, like the real stuff, not malty fruitiness from a typical Kölsch. Light bubblegum notes to the nose as well.

The flavor is rich with a degree of sweetness I wasn't expecting. The body is very rich. I wouldn't know there was mango in this beer except for the title. There's a stronger hop presence than the style suggests. It makes for a decently balanced beer.

Pours a clear, light amber/yellow cololur. Smells like pale malts, slightly sweet, earthy hops, and a hint of mango. Tastes light, bitter, earthy hops, pale malts, sweet malt undertones, and a faint hint of juicy mango. Crisp and refreshing.

Cloudy orange/mango color. Aroma was fresh mango, malty bread with the taste being similar. There is a bitterness to the taste but it is mild and overall pleasant. Body was a bit thick in a good way with what seemed a decent amount of carbonation. Overall it was an excellent beer for sitting outside as the sun goes down which is how I enjoyed it

Had on draft, poured a hazy, straw color typical of the style. Taste was slightly hoppy and malty with a huge mango/citrusy aftertaste. Extremely drinkable, the perfect summer beer!

Pours a hazy pale yellow gold with a 2 finger head, fluffy with lots of nice legs and lace left behind.

Aromas of mango extract, rice, and pilsner malt.

Flavor is bright mango, citrus, and then a very formidable sharp Saaz presence with slight herbal bitterness as well, with a fierce crackery malt, finishing on remaining bitterness and citrus rinds.

Feel is nicely carbonated, with a soft creaminess and a firm back bone. Finish is semi-dry.

Overall, a bit too bitter for a Kolsch, but then on second thought I respect the nice hop presence. It's not shy at all. This is far from a fruit beer - it's more like an in-your-face Kolsch supplemented with mango and citrus.

Candied mango and faint bready malt on the nose. Fresh cut grass but sweet. Taste is slightly artificial mango and a light clean malt bill. Refreshing and makes for a great tailgate beer in the heat

Picked up a single from the Craft Beer Hop Stop 7-8-17 for $2.16. Canning date hard to see but it appears to be in May.

Beer poured a golden orange with an okay white head.

Nose is sweet mango, not bad.

Taste is sweet from the artificial mango which is overriding the Kolsch yeast strain.

Mouthfeel is heavier than expected, medium bodied and not light bodied.

Overall this brew is drinkable but a bit of a disappointment.

A thanks to the king of Kolsch, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, some mango's. Taste is mango ,malts, a bit of graininess. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is decent, but nothing special.

Pours out a nice orange-yellow with a very persistent quarter inch head. While the smell has some fruit the taste is a nice balance of malt and hops with just a hint of fruit in the finish and on the lips. The carbonation level is excellent and long lasting without being bubbly. Great mouthfeel. Overall this is a pretty decent refreshing Kolsch but at 6.5% ABV it isn't something to hit to hard after working in the yard or garage but more of a settling in type beer.

12Oz can-no date. Our second Kolsch and first fruit beer. Very easy drinking and flavorful with wheat, malt and a touch of Mango coming through. Refreshing and not sticky sweet with enough bitterness on the finish to dry it out. Good by itself on a summer day. Purchased at Liquor'n More.

Well aerated pour produces a skimpy white head over a fairly hazy orange brew. No retention and minimal lacing. Smells of mango, wheat, grassy hops, and toffee. Taste is a combination of mango fruitiness and a deep hop-derived earthiness. Feel is subpar, with a drying astringency on the finish and a watery body overall. This bottle was really old, though, which may have something to do with it...

Pours a clear straw yellow with a small white head. Smells of mangos, tropical fruits, and some malt. Tastes of light ripe mangos, and some malt. Light dry body with medium carbonation. Overall this is a good refreshing and not overpowering (fruit wise) fruit beer.

Came a dull slightly hazed deep orange infused golden with a full one finger white head atop.Juicy mango really comes out in the nose along with sweetish biscuit dough, not much hop presence but I really like the fruit and doughiness that stood out.A little dryer on the palate with some mild bread and earthy tones, the mango gives off some nice fruity sweetness in the finish.A little thinner in the mouth.A different take on a kolsch for sure but nice for a hot summer day.

im not sure i need much of this one, but as the mango beers go, especially the light ones like this designed for mass appeal, its hard to not til back a pint pretty quickly and contemplate ordering another one, which may be as high a compliment as a beer like this can be offered. its pale and golden and sticky sweet, with a concentrated mango juicy nose and taste, but not the essence of the fruit, not by a long shot, i miss the light tang, the stringy texture, and that peak of ripeness satisfaction that only comes from the real fruit. this tastes levels below that, from a can or jar, syrupy and sweet, mango sure, but its like a cherry cough drop compared to a real cherry, the two are not the same at all. the beer is light and plain enough to be almost boring without the mango, and so the addition of it is welcomed and it really cant come soon enough for me, but it ends up being sort of lame and mass appealy to me, like it missed its moment, and not even close to the heavy hitting and creative stouts these guys do. its way too rarely these days that i have a beer from clown shoes, so i expect more than this mediocre and generic sugary fruited offering. its just okay...

From the bottom of the can: "CANNED ON: 04/14/17 11703-5 08:17"

Appearance: The body is a slightly hazy light gold color and it supports a good sized fluffy white, billowy head.

Aroma: I get a citrus aroma similar to grapefruit. It smells more like hops than it does fruit.

Taste: There is a nice malty grain flavor up front which combines with a bit of what tastes like the skin of a peach. Not much aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: It has a nice soft mouthfeel and it is very easy to drink. It has a nice light bitterness at the end which is a bit much for a Kölsch but it seems to work well on this beer.

Overall: It is a nice, light, enjoyable beer to just kick back and drink. While I did not pick up any mango aroma or flavor specifically there was a nice tropical fruit aroma and flavor to the beer. I would recommend it and it is nice enough that I would drink it again.

Very hazy, unfiltered golden color. good head that sticks around a bit around the edges. some lacing observable. great color. Obviously fruity smell, mangos come to mind, :) citrus in general is apparent. extremely smooth, zero bitterness. the mango is there, but not as prominent in taste as it was in smell. sweet, but not too sweet. Light in feel, but still a mouthful of flavor, a little bit grainy. not boring at all for how light it feels. I don't think you could ask for a better summertime beer. extremely light, yet very flavorful and enjoyable. Adding this to my list to revisit.

A: Pours a golden/yellow color with a touch of haze. At first a two finger white head forms with good retention. Light lace is left down the glass.
S: Mango up front and center. Citrus hops, maybe some grainy malts in the background. Fruit forward and American hops.
T: Follows the nose. Big mango flavors up front and maybe some citrus hops. The fruit mostly covers everything up. Very light malts in the background, but again hard to pick out. Not a Kolsch at all. Just an American Pale Ale with fruit added. Fairly simple and straight forward at that. Which I would typically enjoy with this style, but it is all fruit.
M/O: A light to medium body. Crisp and clean. Pretty smooth as well. Not hard to drink, but no style points as far as I am concerned.

Don't know why they want to call this a Kolsch in any way? Call it what it is. An American Pale Ale with "Natural Mango Flavor." If that does anything for you then fine. I would rather have a good Kolsch, or a good Pale Ale. Not bad to try once, but plenty in both styles I would grab before this again. Though I guess this is what it takes to get the American beer geek to buy and rate this style relatively highly. Sigh.

A: Pours a relatively clear medium apricot in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation and light to moderate amounts of copper + golden yellow highlights. The beer has a finger tall sudsy foamy off-white head that reduces to a large patch of mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of grainy malts with a light amount of sweetness, tropical mango, and light aromas of grassy + floral hops.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of grainy + cracker malts with light amount of grainy sweetness. That is followed by light flavors of that distinctive kölsch yeast and moderate flavors of tropical mango. Finally there are very light flavors of grassy + floral hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which fades away pretty quickly.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp and clean.

O: Easy to drink, refreshing, and enjoyable, The presence of the mango flavor without much associated sweetness was a nice touch and there was no doubt that the base beer was a kölsch.

pours nice straw color with minimal head and lots of carb. nose is light cracker malt with subtle mango floating around. taste is front palate sweet biscut quickly followed by some light mango flavors and some floral hops. maybe some lemongrass in there as well. body is seemingly full for me through the mid palate but finishes light. hmm. overall a nice take on a kolsch. I get that typical kolsch taste with a mango prescence that is not overpowering but noticed. well done.
