22oz bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 8.99. Bottled 9/14/15. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours a dark cola brown with two fingers of dense tan head. Thick, lasting retention with a wide ring that leaves copious lace.

Coffee dominates the nose with a little nutty presence, some chocolate and roasty malts.

Tastes of bitter, semi burnt coffee, pecan, dark chocolate, burnt caramel and roasted malt. Very little alcohol with coffee fully in the driver's seat.

Medium, almost creamy body with moderate carbonation. Coffee, pecan oil and cocoa play on the palate in the aftertaste.

Clown Shoes' annual take on their fall porter is quite tasty but loses much of the pecan pie charm as the coffee takes over. This year focuses on more of the bitter, roasty notes of the style rather than the nutty, sweet pecan pie of years past. Still a solid and worthwhile brew.

Poured from a 22-ounce bottle black under a 1 finger thick mocha head which fades slowly and leaves splotchy lace. Aroma is roasted malts, toffee, coffee, aged wood and faint spices. Flavor is slightly astringent coffee (older bottle) roast, faint vanilla, and nutty/earthy. Semi-full body and semi-high carbonation. Finishes somewhat creamy and roasty.

Dark brown color with brownish head. Aroma has dark, roasted malts and coffee beans. Taste is slightly sweet and malty at first but gets more bitter and roasty with big coffee notes on the finish. Body is on the light side, carbonation is medium. Overall it's a good coffee porter but I expected it to be more nutty.

Bottle: Poured a dark black color porter with a large foamy head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of light coffee notes with some hazelnut, dust and light pecan notes. Taste is a mix of light pecan notes with some hazelnut and coffee with some black chocolate notes. Body is semi-full with good carbonation. Not bad but missing some balance between the flavors.

"Each year we tweak our Pecan Pie Porter. For 2015, we added cold brewed coffee from Atomic Cafe in Beverly, MA. Smooth porter flavors with sweet roast and rich nutty notes resulted. Genghis Pecan, after attacking beer thieving turkeys for 3 years in a row, has now achieved ultimate victory. He reclines eating pie, sipping a cup of coffee under autumn leaves. Genghis, we salute your valiant Mongolian spirit!" Brewed in the style of an American Porter with pecans and spices and with coffee added. Available in 22 oz. bottles and on limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a creamy foam head of a pale cocoa over a very dark brown, near black body. Retention is good and lacing is light and spotty. 4.5

(Smell) Rich chocolate malts, lightly caramelized malt body, delicate roasted pecan nuttiness and very slight coffee impact with delicate fruit notes and light acidity. Potency is moderate. 3.5

(Taste) The flavor follows the aroma, with chocolate malts, light roasted grains and soft caramel bread, a delicate roasted coffee bean backbone and no noted pecan flavor. Drinks fine as a porter, but very underwhelming as far as the pecan and coffee additives go. 3.5

(Mouthfeel) Texture is slick, lightly oily, lightly roasted, softly acidic, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. Body is medium+ for the style, medium/heavy overall. Balance is nearly even roasted bitter and acidic to sweet. Alcohol presence is low and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) Not a particularly well-presented coffee nor pecan impact in this otherwise ordinary porter, resulting in a very average beer. 3.5

Not a ton of pecan nuttiness but otherwise a tasty beer. Coffee is prominent with chocolate close behind. I do wish there was more from the pecans however.

Poured into a pint glass it is mostly head (was definitely not shaken anytime near opening) and a black body after it dissipated. Smell is coffee, pecan, brown sugar, chocolate, vanilla, lots of nuttiness, and some earth. Taste is pecan, coffee, chocolate, a bit of cinnamon, roasted malt, some molasses, vanilla, and earth. Mouth feel is full as well as body and carbonation. My least favorite out of the pecan pie series, the coffee is nice but adds too little for what it takes away. Less pecan flavor, less spice, less complexity, and just more in your face coffee flavor.

Appearance: Poured in to a chalice. Extremely dark brown-black. Carbonation consists of mostly medium to large bubbles that develop a 2 finger rather thick froth but creamy solidly khaki head; both the head retention and lacing is decent. Nice glass curtain and surface remains after is settles.

Aromatics: Nose has a bit of alcohol waft at the beginning but it carries with it the dark roasted malts and coffee-pecan payload. The pecan is (as expected) the subtlest of the aromas, the bitter toastiness of molasses and burnt caramels overrides the gentle nuttiness that pecans would exude. The coffee does stand out a fair bit, and with it common other scents like cacao and vanilla.

Taste: The first part of the sip is a bit tame but is followed by a heavy in-your-face- espresso strength coffee, dark and bitter, but the softer flavours of pecan (if you can sense it) to me its just a sweet nutty flavour, and of course there is a bit of dark chocolate, but there are some hints at some earthier sweets - anise/fennel comes to mind, mildly herbal and spice qualities that do give it a bit more complexity than I would have thought especially after the flavour pack that happens so early on.

Feel: A very robust character; retains a little crispness in the carbonation but still has some creaminess as well. The finish is surprisingly quite dry and the bitterness aftertaste does meander away quite quickly.

Overall: Its strong, rich, and bitter nature make it a good choice for an early morning pick-me-up or after dinner as a digestif. It has enough complexity: smooth, creamy, rich bitter, and sweet nuttiness - that if I see again I may just pick it up again, but only because my food pairing for it is a natural fit. I enjoyed it as a single one-off, but I think this is one of those beers that begs to be a part of a meal if not used in the prep of a meal.

Pairing: My first inclination was to try this porter with a porter/stout cheese just as a way to capitalize on the stout aspect and introduce a bit of creaminess and fat to de-bitter the beer a touch. Though this is a really good combo, I always think of what I had at the pub last St. Patrick’s Day when I have a stout or porter… and then it hit me - though I love my Irish heritage (on my father’s side) and a good plate of boiled cabbage and bacon sounded great in my head; I immediately lept to my mom’s Ukrainian heritage when I thought cabbage. Sour cabbage rolls! - made the way my Baba would make them with sour cabbage, ground beef/pork and bacon, smother and baked with a tomato sauce that only a grandma could make. Now this is a pairing!
