Style: American Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
We are starting to think Sunset Grill was built over an ancient burial ground or something. This time they were overrun with devious almonds which we quickly dispatched with great vengeance. They left behind some great bourbon barrels that we infused with Amandine almond liquor from Grand Ten Distillery in Boston. We then aged our imperial stout Undead Party Crasher in these barrels. Their loss, your gain.

Poured into a snifter, the appearance was a semi-dark brown close to black color with a finger’s worth of almond white foamy head. Light messy lace. The aroma had some soft sweet to roasty almonds over top of some fudge/brownie mix, light whiskey, driftwood and a light earthy hoppiness. The flavor was moderately sweet running through some woody dryness. Aftertaste was dry almonds and fudge. Finish was malty sweet. The feel was about medium on the body with a good sipping quality about it. ABV felt as projected by the brewer. Carbonation felt fine. Overall, it worked as an imperial stout, maybe not one to seek and destroy as a hopeful "whale,’ but it did the trick for me.

22oz bottle from CraftBeerLos (thank you!). Bottled 2/11/16. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours black with a finger and a quarter of khaki head. The fluffy retention stretches toawide band and leaves huge swaths of crusty lacing.

Smells of smoke, chocolate, fired roasted nuts and wet oak. Enjoyable with the nuttiness adding an intriguing dimension.

A smooth, smokey Undead Party Crasher base shines clear as day in the flavor. Dark chocolate, smoked fruit skins, cooked caramel, used coffee grounds. But embracing that familiar base are layers of roasted almonds, toasted oak and wet, earthy wood. It's at once familiar and a pleasant departure.

Creamy medium full body with some coating but loose carbonation. Darked chocolate coated smoked almonds, burnt caramel and wet oak linger on the palate in the finish.

Amandine Exorcism was not near the overt almond explosion for which I'd hoped but still a worthy addition to Clown Shoes lineup. Hopefully if it's produced again I'll score a fresher bottle to see if the amandine is more pronounced.

Drank from a 1 pint 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Cambridge Wine & Spirits, Cambridge, MA
Bottled on 02/11/16
Served in a snifter

Super thick and oily, near pitch black appearance. An inch tall crop of tight, creamy, cappuccino colored froth rose above the liquid and later fell to a bubbly film. A spotty wall of lacing trickled down the glass.

The nose was really rich and enticing. Chocolate notes dominated initially. Powdered cocoa to be precise. Some chocolate fudge as well. Bit of roasted malt. Espresso perhaps too. There was a dry, chalky yeastiness in the background. Touch of booze. Perhaps some bourbon. As the beer sat, the aroma intensified and also became sweeter. Brown sugar notes appeared as well. The bourbon barrel also really made its presence known.

Chocolate notes came through big time in the flavor profile. Really rich and fudgey. Loads of vanilla. Sweet but not overly so. Moderately roasty in the center and on the back end. Some booziness kicked in here as well. The beer finished somewhat roasty with a big alcohol kick. For a 12% ABV beer, however, the booze was shockingly well restrained.

The beer was fuller bodied and contained a very subtle effervescence. Despite this, the liquid managed to froth up nicely on the palate. Creamy and fluffy. Silky smooth. By the end of the session, the beer left a sticky film on my lips.

Clown Shoes barrel-aged beers can be hit or miss, but Amandine Exorcism was pretty amazing. Despite not picking up the subtleties of the Amandine, this was amazingly rich and complex. I look forward to trying other barrel treatments of this beer in the future.
