Exorcism Of Rachel WallExorcism Of Rachel Wall
Notes: Unfortunately there was another incident in front of Sunset Grill in Allston and this time the ghost of Rachel Wall emerged from the wreckage. She was a true pirate, and the last woman to be hanged in Massachusetts, and we felt a fitting remembrance would be to fill 14rum barrels with Undead Party Crasher and add Tahitian vanilla beans. Rachel, we know you have fury from beyond the grave, but cut it out with the possessions please.

Very happy to be in Massachusetts to be able to pick up 3 bottles of this MA-only release.
Look: Like a good imperial stout should look, inky black with a little tan foam when poured into my tulip glass.
Smell: Vanilla, dark fruits, slight spice from the rum barrels.
Taste: Really a nice combination of sweet vanilla and spicy rum accents to the excellent base beer. On the back end, a bit of char and chocolate.
Feel: Medium thick but more creamy as the beer warmed.
Overall: Another great barrel-aged stout from Clown Shoes. A unique blend of sweet vanilla; smoky/spicy Rum barrels and a solid base stout.

Bought at the Beer Shop in East Longmeadow, MA. Beer pours jet black with a thin medium-color brown head. One can smell that sharp vanilla flavoring that comes from the aging in the aroma. Really sharp and sweet aromas of vanilla with chocolate, malts, and alcohol. The taste follows the nose with a strong booze-rum blast to the palate mixed with sharp vanilla and some cherry and similar fruits. Mouthfeel is generally balanced with a good creamy texture but enough good carbonation to make it crisp. Overall, I loved the flavor mix and the complimentary mouthfeel and aromas with this beer.

Pours a thick rich dark 1/2 finger head that fades semi slowly, nice lacing, and long legs, pitch black thick beer.

Nose brings loads of dark malts and roast, roasted barley, burnt malts, burnt caramel, a little nougat and baking spices, a little burnt coffee and charred barrel notes, a little earthy rich vanilla, faint rum in the background with nice dark chocolate cocoa too.

Taste brings loads of vanilla out front, rich creamy earthy vanilla, with a little rum, like molasses rum but smooth, thick rich creamy beer, some roasted malts, a little charred caramel, burnt coffee, dark chocolate, super bitter cocoa, some bitter spicy earthy hop notes, faint baking spices and vanilla pudding, fluffy nougat. Finish is sticky but dry, a little booze warmth, mild bitterness, lingering vanilla, cocoa, and roasted malts.

Mouth is super creamy lush rich almost chewy, velvety, nice carb, and very little booze.

Overall pretty nice beer, I expected more flavors to come through as many seemed a bit muted, but great vanilla, incredible mouth feel, rum a bit light but maybe a good thing.

Draft at Sunset Grille, Allston MA.

A- Ghastly pitch black tap to tulip pour with a deep mocha tan head. Tiny cap with low retention. A small ring drops large sheets of lacing.

S- Massive chocolate, massive vanilla and plenty more dessert notes beyond that. The rum adds a smoothness to compliment the vanilla with toasted oak, brown sugar, caramel, cocoa nibs, milk chocolate and charred barley.

T- The beer is once again all about those desserts and truffles. Chocolate is again beyond a beast with everything from cocoa powder to cassis bitter dark chocolate coming to mind. Wet worn out toasted oak wood, brown sugar, caramel, burnt barley, spiced raisin, coconut and vanilla bean bomb.

MF- Thick body with an oily slickness and creamy consistency. Medium high carbonation and beyond silky smooth. Ends warm.

Brilliant interplay between the vanilla, rum and chocolate. Give me a dessert to pair with this rich beast and I'll be all set.

Pours black with a dark tan head. Head disappears quickly.
Smell is boozy, malty, whiff of vanilla, not much else.
Taste is malty, boozy, hints of caramel, nuts, vanilla, faint though they are.
Full bodied, rich, warming. Definitely a sipping brew.
Another hit from Clown Shoes.

Pours pitch black with about a finger of light brown head, good retention, leaves behind moderate lacing. Aroma is dark malts but stops short of roasty. There are lots of dark fruits. As the beer warms vanilla and spicy rum notes become much more prominent. Taste hits the same notes as the aroma but vanilla and rum notes dominate at first but quickly give way to dark fruits and molasses notes. Syrupy in feel, not sweetness, with a medium-full body. Overall this is a very good beer. I liked this beer more when the rum barrel and vanilla notes were more subtle. After a few somewhat disappointing experiences with Clown Shoes IPAs im now willing to reset my expectations on this brewery and look forward to trying more of their stouts.

Drank from a 1 pint 6 fl. oz. bottle purchased at Pemberton Farms Market, Cambridge, MA
Bottled on 07/15/16
Served in a snifter

Dark brown/black appearance. Super slick and oily in the glass. The body was topped by barely-there cap of tan froth that quickly dissolved. A few streaks of lacing trickled along the glass.

Interesting aroma. Roasted malts came through strong. Bit of char. Smoky notes were apparent. Some molasses and dark fruits too. Light barrel notes. I would not peg this for being rum barrel aged but perhaps bourbon or even port. Touch of vanilla. Moderate sweetness. There was a savory quality as well. Soy sauce came to mind. As the beer sat, the vanillla and the sweetness intensified.

The flavor profile was similar to the nose but slightly more interesting initially. Roasty on the front end. Somewhat sweet. Brown sugar and molasses were noticeable. Strong dark fruit notes in the center. Currants and charred raisins perhaps. Light barrel notes. Bit of licorice. Like the nose, a savory, soy sauce-like quality was apparent. The finish contained notes of booze, smoke, char and a subtle sweetness. As the beer sat, I picked up a fruity, semi-oxidized, port-like quality.

Nice rich, thick, viscous mouthfeel. Full bodied for the style. Creamy and slick on the palate. The liquid contained a fine, frothy, tongue blanketing effervescence. Velvety smooth.

While not all of their beers are particularly impressive, Clown Shoes use interesting barrel treatments on many of their imperial stouts and barleywines. Exorcism Of Rachel Wall might not contain much rum barrel or vanilla, but it was enjoyable nevertheless. Fans of sweet and savory, dark fruit-forward stouts (a-la Abyss) should certainly give this a try.

Had in a tulip glass on draft. Pours pitch black like a good imperial stout. Tiny head but retains some lacing. Solid smell of barrel aged booze you look for in the style. Vanilla & coconut in the smell, but can't distinguish the booze as rum. Still the smell indicates good flavor soaked from the barrel. Mouthfeel not too fizzy, even though slightly more carbonated than some in this style. You can tell a good base stout was used. Some roasted bitterness hiding in the taste, but coated by the vanilla/oak/booze of the barrel. Overall another solid barrel-aged stout. If you like the style, this works. Tastes different from other rum-barrel aged beers I've had before, which seemed to get a certain sourness from the rum. This tasted closer to a whiskey barrel aged stout.

Gorgeous stout that is dark and mysterious. Two fingers of mocha color head forms and slowly settles to a thick cap leaving behind solid lacing. Mild rum aroma compliments the roasted malt, caramel, and vanilla notes. The flavor is a little too boozy for my liking as it overpowers the rest of the beer. Besides the alcohol heat I taste rum, brown sugar, molasses, roasted malt, and vanilla. Big body and nicely carbonated only hurt by the thinning affect of the ethanol. Enjoyable barrel-aged stout by Clown Shoes. Could use more barrel character and a little age to tame the alcohol heat down a bit, but quite nice fresh.

Beer that educates! Well, if you count learning that Rachel Wall was the last female hanged in Massachusetts via Wikipedia. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife.

Pours dark, minimal visible carbonation. The nose is all rum & Caribbean sugar.

The Exorcism of Rachel Wall is right in that Clown Shoes sweet spot - good without being memorable. Rum has the upper hand here, & it’s of the sugar-laced variety with only a pinch of spicing, perhaps cinnamon. Vanilla taste is subtle & presents more as another layer of teeth-eating sweetness than true vanilla. Caramel, molasses, booze contribute. Certainly thick, but heavy enough that I’d have been content with a big taster.

This is all about the barrel, to the point where it crushes whatever the base beer is under its Shrek-like heel. Good beer.

22oz bottle. Pours a pitch black color with an inch of dark brown head. Moderate amount of lacing. Lots of vanilla and rum in the nose along with espresso, dark chocolate, and roasted malts. The taste is vanilla upfront followed by the heat of the rum that mellows into roasted coffee and bitter dark chocolate. More vanilla and rum barrel at the finish with some espresso. Boozey as expected but pretty smooth. Velvety mouthfeel with little carbonation and a lighter than expected mouthfeel. I've said this about 100 times by now but Clown Shoes knows how to make great barrel aged beers and this is another example. Worth seeking out.
