Unfortunately there was another incident in front of Sunset Grill in Allston and this time the ghost of Rachel Wall emerged from the wreckage. She was a true pirate, and the last woman to be hanged in Massachusetts, and we felt a fitting remembrance would be to fill 14rum barrels with Undead Party Crasher and add Tahitian vanilla beans. Rachel, we know you have fury from beyond the grave, but cut it out with the possessions please.

22oz bottle. Bottling date of '01/03/17'.
Black colored body, with mahogany back lit edge. One finger of tan head. Leaves a few spots of lacing.
Rum barrel is apparent in the aroma, with dark roasted malts, but also the vanilla appears.
Taste is dark roasted malts, with a touch of char. The rum barrel coats all. Has the lighter touch of vanilla.
Toward a thicker mouth feel, with some mouth coating texture. Good carbonation.
The higher ABV% is evident but not hot. The beer drinks rather smooth, and without impediment.

A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger of light tan head which fades slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass with minimal lacing
S: Smells of rich vanilla, dark chocolate and cocoa, slight coffee, and some roasted malts with some slight rum funk.
T: Taste is vanilla with some rum barrel funk, dark chocolate, roasted malts, Italian roast coffee, and some more hints of vanilla. On the swallow this beer is a little more rum, dark chocolate, roasted malts, coffee, and some slight oak.
M: This beer has a slightly creamy and silky body with a mouthfeel that is on the heavier side of medium. Carbonation is just slightly prickly while the beer has a drying finish.
O: Overall this one is well executed. The barrel influence is subtle and the vanilla notes are still pretty evident despite me hanging onto this beer for about two years. The complexity of the beer and the flavors work well together which makes this one an enjoyable drink. Probably a little better fresh to really let the vanilla shine but worth a try.

When I purchased my bottles of Exorcism of Rachel Wall (and Exorcism at Sunset), one of the liquor store employees recommended that I wait a few months before opening it. He cautioned me that it was still pretty hot. Natch - so I waited.

I had a day off, so I opened my first bottle 2/19/18. The rum presence is quite noteworthy - the nose is sweet, syrupy rum. There's plenty of heat in your chest, and a lingering barrel presence in the finish. Like many rum barrel-aged beers, it's slightly thin - but still quite laden with tasty complexity. The vanilla is still hanging on, but isn't quite as present as I might like. Carbonation is mellow, but definitely adequate. Not much of a head on the beer though.

All in all - given what Clown Shoes asks for their bombers, Exorcism is more reasonably priced than Pirate Bomb or Pirate Noir. I'm not sure which I would jump at first, given a choice... probably the Prairie beers, given my crush on Prairie. But, Exorcism is tremendously good for the price point. Very much recommended.

A really nice blend of the chocolate, vanilla and rum. Aroma is actually quite boozy, but the taste not so. Starts with noticable vanilla and a rum lingering finish. Creamy mouthfeel. Enjoyed this one quite alot.

This beer pours a deep black with a thin head. The aroma features vanilla, praline, marshmallow fluff, roast hazelnut, chocolate, and candied fruit. The flavor is full but less rich than I anticipated, with vanilla, praline, and chocolate most prominent, with some craisin, plum, raisin. The mouthfeel is actually medium bodied, with mostly small and light carbonation. Overall this is a tasty beer, very ayered, and it manages to avoid being too rich. Clown Shoes does know stouts.

22oz bottle from CraftBeerLos (thanks man!). Bottled 1/3/17. Served in a Clown Shoes snifter.

Pours jet black with two and a half fingers of tan head. The light foam settles to a patchy haze across the surface, a modest halo and some speckled trails of lace.

The aroma of roasty, lightly smoked malt is first to greet my nostrils. Dark chocolate, rum-soaked wood, cooked sugar and a faint whisper of vanilla.

The Undead Party Crasher base is immediately apparent in the flavor. That smokey, roasty chocolate is joined by subtle, sugary rum, cooked caramel, coffee, molasses, mild vanilla and a slight nip of alcohol.

Creamy, medium full body with supple carbonation. The aftertaste is like rum-kissed, lightly smoked dark chocolate covered vanilla-infused coffee beans.

Clown Shoes continues haunting the Sunset Grill with their delicious variants. This time the sweetness imparted by the rum and vanilla beans play a great counterpoint to the bitter, roasty base. After several attempts to connect with this brew I quite happy to have tried it. Not the vanilla extravaganza I'd hoped for but still well worth trying.

Pours black with a dark tan head. Head disappears quickly.
Smell is boozy, malty, whiff of vanilla, not much else.
Taste is malty, boozy, hints of caramel, nuts, vanilla, faint though they are.
Full bodied, rich, warming. Definitely a sipping brew.
Another hit from Clown Shoes.

Beer that educates! Well, if you count learning that Rachel Wall was the last female hanged in Massachusetts via Wikipedia. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife.

Pours dark, minimal visible carbonation. The nose is all rum & Caribbean sugar.

The Exorcism of Rachel Wall is right in that Clown Shoes sweet spot - good without being memorable. Rum has the upper hand here, & it’s of the sugar-laced variety with only a pinch of spicing, perhaps cinnamon. Vanilla taste is subtle & presents more as another layer of teeth-eating sweetness than true vanilla. Caramel, molasses, booze contribute. Certainly thick, but heavy enough that I’d have been content with a big taster.

This is all about the barrel, to the point where it crushes whatever the base beer is under its Shrek-like heel. Good beer.
