Smooth as butter! I was truly impressed by this tasty stout = barleywine hybrid.

Pours a deep, black oil consistency, light red notes, solid khaki head with lovely lacinjg.
Nose is roasted malts forward, vanilla, oak, some rum notes, caramel, cocoa.
Taste is sweet malts forward, caramel, licorice, cocoa, vanilla with transition to smokey, vanilla and rum notes on the finish.
Mouthfeel is medium to full, hint of carbonation and acididty to keep it from becoming too syrupy.
Overall, another great barrel aged beer from Clown Shoes – not quite a fist full of Unidgragon, but definitely a pleasant brew. The rum notes are solid and the combination is smooth and pleasant.

Look: Dark black with a mocha colored head. Looks great.

Aroma: can definitely smell Rum as I opened the bottle and began pouring it into a tulip glass. vanilla notes, dark and milk chocolates. faint molasses.

Taste: rum filled sweet chocolates. just the right amount of sweetness, not cloying. not much bitterness or roasted notes to this but just enough to cut down on the sweetness. rum is in the finish and brings a warmth with it.

Feel: a fairly thick mouthfeel to this one. velvety, soft, chewy, fudgy. tremendous mouthfeel, you get a bit of the barleywine at the tail end, slightly less thick than at first.

hard for me to pick which BA Clown Shoes offering I like best now. its either this or Luchedor en Fuego.

Garnet-tinted black with a finger of soupy mocha head that's fairly quick to dissipate into a wisp and crown.

Much lighter smelling than anticipated. Sort of a dry, yeasty malt aroma, like an English brown ale, with some faint dark fruit, a kiss of vanilla, dull earthy hops and paint-thinner style alcohol when you really put your snout into it. That sounds pretty complex and enticing, but it's all surprisingly faint.

There's more there-there in the taste, but not a whole lot more. It's most like a Russian Imperial Stout, with dark chocolate and bitter hops hitting first, and that strong bitterness pretty much lingering, along with some light coffee and strong alcohol, on the back end.

There's a little fig and toffee behind mid-palate, and some red wine character showing through the bitter chocolate in the aftertaste, but there's still less of the sweetness or fruit I'd expect from a barleywine or a rum barrel program. The chocolate masks it.

Relatively thin for the styles represented here, with probably a tad too much carbonation.

This might benefit from a year or three of mellowing. At this age, it seems like the Imperial Stout blocks out most of what else is in there, while still not being able to shine itself. I'd have cut back on the stout in the blending, while bumping up the barleywine.

Overall, this is not living up to my expectations. The one thing it does have going for it is, causing me to bump up the score a bit, is that if you really work at it, you can get some hints of what's hidden in there. If that sounds like fun, you might like it more.

Was hoping for a barrel/rum infused beer. Disappointing. Chalky notes, followed by a stout finish, not as stand-out as I had hoped. slight wood taste if you are looking for it

Taste Rating in Words: It's hide and seek in the woods, in the dark. Fun at first, then you realize nothing special is happening and you know, there is a different/better game back at camp.

Appearance: Pours fudge colored with a thick mocha head; impressive lacing action drapes the chalice; strong retention, too

Smell: Very roasty, with caramel, smoke, oak, licorice, earthy tones and a hint of chocolate

Taste: Roast, caramel, licorice and earthy tones forward, with some chocolate and hop tones, through the middle; sweet and slightly smoky through the finish; the Rum is very subtle but adds an element to the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation

Overall: More barleywine than stout elements and I wish there was a bit more chocolate in the mix; also, I am having a hard time finding the Rum barrel impact here - I was expecting a lot more from that

damn fine brew. straight out the gate good. imo clown shoes barrel aged beers are better off having fresh than letting sit for a while. definitely more stout characteristics with a sweet note of rum on the finish. i'll be buying another.

Dark brown/black in color. Frothy slight mocha cap that retreats with no lacing. Wood, licorice, maybe some vanilla in the aroma. Some coffee/toffee flavor with molasses, dark fruits, and sugar. Not much carbonation, somewhat of a dry feel but still sticky and sweet. Goes down quite smooth and the almost 12% is rather unnoticed. Another great addition to the "Beast" line of aged stouts.

Enjoyed from the 22 oz bottle in a snifter. This FINE hybrid blend
pours a deep coal black with a light head of lasting foam that fades to
a thick ring, thin subtle pool ,and light lacing. Nose of bourbon, booze, chocolate,
rich caramel, char, toffee, dark berries, coffee, and black strap molasses. Flavors hit the
right notes with char touched coffee, molasses, brandy barrel notes, bourbon warmth
on the rear, light cream that appears and fades under bourbon and oak notes, marshmallow,
and black strap molasses with dark berry notes appearing on the sides and rear featuring
blackberry and raspberry notes with tobacco, smoke, and cola touched rum. Excellent mouth
feel; smooth for such a beast, rich, coating, boozy, warm and inviting, low carbonation, and a full
mouth feel.......O MY! Lions, and tigers, and....the hammer of the beast. A bevy of boozy brilliance.
Overwhelming and in your face full throttled Clown Shoes.
