A sleeper RIS that has won me over and become a go-to. Dark as pitch with a just thick enough mouthfeel and heavy lacing. Dark notes of earth, chocolate, espresso and hazelnut are well-balanced and come out more when the beer is warmer, when the smoky flavor also shines through. Just enough bitterness. Another hit by Clown Shoes. I see that some people have felt that this brewery has not impressed them, but I have had the exact opposite experience. I went initially with a negative bias from the first bottle for some reason and have had that completely disappear. Many of their beers are outstanding and a few have become all-time favorites... Cheers!

A: Dark and complex. Very nice creamy, persistent head.

S: Again, complex. The nose has malt, hops, alcohol, toased biscuit, caramel, chocolate.

T: Much like the smell. There is a LOT going on in the taste. It evolves as each drink and swallow progresses. Finishes with a great warmth and malt character.

M: Thick and creamy. Almost filling.

O: I love this Russian. I personally think it's a great example of what the style can be. This is not a timid or apologetic beer. DO NOT use this for calibration.

Maybe I love Russian Imperial Stout's too much, but this is just fantastic. Balanced flavor, all the stout regulars, but no one sticking out. Just a marvelous beer.

Yes I am a fan of clown shoes. I'm not going to dissect this stout. This is everything a traditional RIS should be complex tasty with a high abv. I'd recommend this for the beginner and the veteran. Clown shoes just gets big stouts and this is a shining example. Well done. Praying to Odin to see a barrel aged or chocolate version.

Surprised this doesn't have better reviews. Excellent imperial stout! Pours pitch black with a chocolatey head which then turns into a nice creamy foam head before it dissipates. Smell is very chocolatey and sweet. Very strong. Taste and feel is complex. Chocolatey, sweet, and floral upfront with a little bit of a peppery aftertaste which balances it out. Don't even really taste the 12.5% abv. Overall this is a very fine Russian imperial, and will definitely revisit this one again.

Awesome art work and a creative name made me have no choice but to grab this. It's almost like 3-F's and Clown Shoes are cut from the same cloth.

A - Jet black almost like unidragon blood. It pours very thick with a nice fluffy brown head and strong lacing.

S - Just explodes with tons of of sweet malt smell with mostly roasted, chocolate, caramel, and some toffee notes radiating out. There are even some hops with the rich herbal character that you don't usually find in big black stouts but this one is a real Winner.

T - The first sip you are overwhelmed with tremendous flavors of malty, roasty, chocolate, coffee, and toffee/caramel sweetness. Also the hops keep it very interesting lending some flavorful hoppiness and bitterness to the decadent taste. Only the slightest of alcohol but is definitely mask very well with all of the flavor. I've had many smaller beers with much more alcohol bite. The roasted character is preserved in flavor and not just bitterness or char allowing the coffee like flavor of roasted malt to shine.. I am extremely happy to taste a stout that actually uses some alpha acids to calm the sweetness and not just rely on the bitterness of the roasted malts.

M - HUGE mouth-feel with perfect moderate to low carbonation. Super thick and full but some how the bitterness on the finish and the perfect carbonation lets you keep drinking this to the last drop.

Overall, an extremely good RIS! I am unsure as to why it doesn't have the rating that I would expect from such a flavorful stout but then again I am a "hop-head" and I really enjoy being able to taste the hops in every beer I have. The hops may be a negative trait for other dark beer enthusiasts that prefer to keep Imperial stouts and IPAs out of the same drink. If price and availability were not a consideration I would pick this stout over any other regular RIS on the market; however, with Ten Fidy being in every local liquor store and only being $15 per 4 pack it is hard to justify paying $15 dollars for a bomber just to taste some hoppiness in my stout.

Do yourself a favor and try this the next time you are craving a big imperial stout!

I told myself I wouldn't review a beer until I tried one that I would give a 5, and I wouldn't give a 5 until I tried a beer I literally thought was perfect. I never thought either criterion would be fulfilled. It has.

Poured into a glass mug an almost black body with a deep mahogany head that lasted a while. It smelled a beautiful aroma of roasted malt with slight hints of chocolate and anise. The flavor was a deep bot not immediately noticeable sweetness, with deliciously heavy malt and, again, slight hints of chocolate and anise. The mouthfeel was a perfect consistency, thick but not cloying, with mild carbonation.

Overall, this is exactly what a stout should be. I can't even imagine a better stout. Despite a whopping 12.5% ABV, the alcohol is barely noticeable in comparison to a mind-blowingly awesome flavor. Anybody who gets a chance to try this should absolutely pick up a bottle.

Surprise package received today. In it was a bottle of this black beauty. Bottled September 2011. Thanks Gregg!

Poured into a snifter. Pours a deep jet black, no light gets through. On top sits a light mocha head that drops rather quickly, leaving a mere wisp of foam around the glass rim and some lacing.

Aromas of big, dark roast - coffee, malt, and hints of dark cocoa. Come candied dark fruit, vanilla, and a hint of alcohol.

Flavors of burnt sugar, dark roasted coffee, dark (90%) cocoa, no hint of dark roast malt harshness, very intense. Warming alcohol bite, vanilla. Finish is long, dark, roasty, coffee bitterness, and alcohol warmth. Finish goes on for days.

Mouthfeel is sticky, oily, mouthcoating roasty bitterness. Good level of carbonation. An alcohol bite.

Overall, another very intense, outstanding brew from Clown Shoes. This Shoehead loves these beers!

Holy Shit...this was one terrific RIS!! up there with the best.
Appearence: Awesome, dont know if this is bottle conditioned but it looks to be...nice head that fades away as normal but leaves lacing.

Smell: heavenly, roasted malts, dark/milk chocolate, coffee/espresso, alcohol.

Taste: roasted malts, coffee bean, espresso, dark chocolate, alcohol.

Mouth feel: perfect carbonation along with buzzy alcohol that cleans the palate. Probably the best mouth feel of any RIS i have had!

Drink this thing at room Temp and you will be amazed! I cant say enough about this brew...just great!

Wow. Wasn't sure what to expect, even though i am huge fan of Clown Shoes. The only hoppy stouts I have tried are Storm King and Nightstalker. Love Storm King, hated Nightstalker for some reason.

B.U. pours a dark, dark brown with a thick milk chocolate colored head. Lot's of lacing as I sipped.

Smell is of roast, smoke, chocoalte, coffee, dark fruits, some hops.

The tastes was more bitter when it was cold then sweetened with dark chocoalte and coffee as it warmed. Fanatstic and CREAMY.

The twelve percent is not noticable until you feel it hit you.

Clown Shoes hit a home run with this one. As complex as many of the barrel aged RISs out there, but amazingly balanced.

Opaque brown/black in nature stout that has a decent foamy tan head with minimal lacing. Smells of mostly roasted malts with nibs of chocolate and some coffee mixed in too. Tastes of bitter chocolate, dark brewed coffee, and roast. Smooth, and silky mouthfeel that finishes with a slight alcohol burn. Clown Shoes has produced another high quality stout that I have enjoyed greatly. Overall, not as good as Undead Party Crasher, but Blaecorn Unidragon holds it's own and I would try this one again.

A: Dark/pitch black with about 1/2inch of off white head that slowly dissipates. Lovely!!!!

S: Very nice roasted malt aroma!!! It has lots of toffee, coffee, caramel, vanilla aroma.

T: lot of dark roasted malts taste, mixed with coffee. very very nice.

M: Well balanced, for a 12.5% beer. It is really nice, has a medium body, yet still has all the complexity of a great imperial stout.

O: A well balanced 12.5% Imperial stout that doesn't hurt the budget and it taste better than the popular once in a blue moon stouts. At a price less then $10 for a bomber this is a must have.

Look: Very deep black with a very slight hint of brown as it's poured.
Smell: Coffee beans with a bit roasted flavor and to some lesser extent there is some chocolate finish to it. As it warms I do smell more chocolate.
Taste: A biter taste with more coffee as compared to the smell.
Feeling: A nice soft kick to it as I swished it around in my mouth only to gulp it down.
Overall: Excellent beer with a wide range of high points to it.

Poured this from a 22oz. bomber.

This beer pours a dark, dark brownish black color. The head is a gorgeous taupe, mocha-like color, with fine bubbles that linger for quite a while and finally dissipate to a fine lace.

The aroma(s) of this beer are rocking and powerful. I love the smell of coffee and chocolate so this was stunning. It showed heavily roasted malts with bitter baking chocolate and even a moderate hint of baking spices like cinnamon and clove on the nose. There was a slightly floral note too which I thought was pretty interesting.

The mouthfeel was powerful at first, but as I sipped more I was amazed at how balanced it was. The same flavor compounds as found on the nose (chocolate, coffee, spice) showed on the palate. The bitterness was moderate but really helped balance the malty sweetness and surprisingly high alcohol, which was not even really detectable because of the balance.

I loved this beer right away, from the very cool dragon-like being on the label to the coffee and chocolate aroma. Having said that, I only feel like this beer will get better with age as the hops drop a little bit and the aromas meld together a bit more. I'm excited about trying this one again with some time in bottle.

Wow! I need to get out (and on more. I had never heard of this brewery before but I saw this lone bottle sitting on a shelf in my hometown distributor and picked it up.

12.5% ABV? No sweat.

Poured into a wide-mouthed wine glass. Black. Brown head. Intimidating. I know how it felt for prehistoric creatures to stare into tar pits.

Smell is overwhelming, fragrant, bitter, like coffee but sweeter with whiffs of raisins.

The taste starts off cool and bitter but opens up to literal and perceived warmth as I savor it. Very chocolatey, but with lots of bitter, dark roasted coffee and the aforementioned raisin notes, plus a hint of licorice in the aftermath. The alcohol is subtle but its effects are noted with the first sip. Warmth radiates through my appendages.

So very, very good.

Hey, Clown Shoes got their own cap! Gold with Clown shoes on them!

This beer pours an inviting deep black color with a thick brown head. Lot's of clumpy lace.

The smell was a little more subdued than the rest of the beer, with hops present, then raost and chocolate and a whiff of the alchol.

The taste and mouthfeel blew me away. A huge creamy wave of bitter and dark flavors hit first, then over time the rich chocolate and creamy coffee flavors came out in force. The beer is not as heavey as some RIS, but I like that the flavors are integrated and not overwhelmed by overly sweet, syrupy goop.

Great, great beer!!!

Disclaimer: bought this sometime in 2013 ,when it was some months old already, then allowed it to slumber in my cellar until now.

Looks as beautiful as a Russian Imperial stout can look, IMO, with deep, dark light devouring blackness and a playfully abundant light brown head that retains very well and leaves a sexy lacing.

Smell is slightly subtle, possibly due to age, but not subdued. I new I would, probably love this beer at my first whiff! Abundant dark roasted malt notes with hints of coffee and chocolate. Just how I like my Imperial Stouts!

Where the scent was subtle the flavor is not! Chocolate and espresso march to the forefront while the dark Malts dance in the background! Hints of liquorice and dark fruits are present but only as minor notes which is fine with me!

All of these aspects create a surprisingly balanced Feel that is both smooth and assertive without being cloying. Lingering just enough on the tongue to excite the senses and build lust for the next sip!

Overall, possibly, the best of this style I've had this year! Love this brewery and can't get enough of it!
Anyone have some to trade? I live in NorCal so have a lot of those brewery's at my disposal, as well as SoCal's, and could probably procure just about anything, from those regions, that anyone in the Midwest/east coast could want!
On a side note I would like to add how epic I find the name of this brew!
Drank half the bottle out of pint glass, it had a great Unicorn design on it so I couldn't resist,
the rest out of a snifter!
Highly recommend this brew.

huge foamy tan head with lots of bubbles that just stays around for days! deep dark opaque black body and a ton of lacing.

the scent is strong with espresso and anise as well as some piney hops. there is even a hint of wood and roastiness to it.

the flavor is the same but a bit more potent, lots of roastiness and pine. espresso and woodiness and sweet molasses set the backdrop.

the mouthfeel is very full bodied but not syrupy as most imperial stouts tend to be. very foamy from the enormous head and dry in the finish.

this beer has a surprising amount of drinkability given its full bodied and complex nature.

this beer reminds me alot of the espresso aged yeti from great divide but with a less strong emphasis on the espresso and a greater one on more complexity. fantastic beer, my best regards.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into my trusty tulip glass

A- Poured a jet black color with a thin, tan, 1/2 finger head that dissipated rather quickly

A- Chocolate, cocoa, some coffee, hint of smokiness

T- Follows the nose rather closely with flavors of chocolate, cocoa powder, vanilla, some dark fruits, with some mild hoppiness on the backend and a hint of smoke

M- Creamy, full bodied mouthfeel with little to no carbonation. Nicely balanced and just a hint of alcohol burn.

O- I thoroughly enjoyed this beer. A wonderful example of a Russian Imperial Stout, with some more complexity that expected. Clown Shoes is a brewery that never disappoints. I highly recommend this beer!

This beer passes the jet black test, nothing but opaque blackness with a nice amount of creamy tan head but theres not much retention and lacing going on, still looks beautiful after the pour.

This beer has a delicious milk chocolately and coffee aroma that I just can't get enough of. I just wish it had more head retention to really keep it fragrant beyond the initial pour. I can barely detect any of the boozyness in it, its very well masked given the ABV.

Flavor wise its just a continuation of the aroma but theres more of a coffee and unsweetened chocolate that comes out, no hops at all. The coffee notes come in in the middle and it finished with a chocolately bitterness that beckons you to keep drinking.

This beer has a very nice viscosity and as it warms up more and more flavor comes out. Its really smooth and creamy despite the lack of head. I was very impressed with this offering from clown shoes and will definitely be enjoying this beer as a staple imperial stout.

Pours out near pitch black with slight hints of a dark chocolate brown. The head starts at a very respectable 3/4 inch, the lacing is moderate and only sticks around for a little bit. Pretty impressive for such a high ABV.

I have a slight cold right now, but a lot comes through anyway. Dark chocolate, roasted malts, molasses, anise and citrus shine through. A bit of booze is noticed near the end.

Chocolate and cumquat combine at the start of the taste. Vanilla, coffee, anise and burnt cocoa quickly follow. A bit of lemon, booze and caramel wait for the end. Complex and very fun taste. Thick and smooth going down.

Goddamn that was good. I need one for the cellar... I need 100 for the cellar. I jest, or do I???
