Clown Shoes
Massachusetts, United States

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 12.50%

Notes / Commercial Description:
Brewed with a monstrous amount of malt and combined with aggressive American hops, this beer is powerful and complex and designed to age. Smokiness is subtle but present and blends nicely with the rich, dark flavors.

22oz bottle. I've seen too much of the Game of Thrones beer labels recently, and this one isn't helping.

This beer pours a solid, oil-stain black, with the very slightest of basal cola edges, and three fingers of puffy, densely foamy, and chunky chocolate milk brown head, which leaves some decent, if awkwardly splayed webbed lace around the glass as it slowly bleeds off.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, musty dark chocolate (like that stuff on sale months after Christmas, Easter, or Hallowe'en), weak coffee, licorice root, wet ash, indistinct black orchard fruit, and earthy, leafy, and kind of grassy hops. The taste is big on the semi-sweet milk chocolate straight off, verily overshadowing the toasty and bready caramel/toffee malt, but not the salty Nordic black licorice, mushy dark fruit (plums, dates, and 'holiday' cherries), cafe-au-lait, nor the sidling leafy, weedy, and uber alles, perfumed hops.

The bubbles are actually quite supportive, if a tad frothy in their bearing, the body a decent medium-heavy weight, and more or less smooth, the hops weirdly more threatening at this juncture than any, well, alcoholic measures. It finishes off-dry, and not as sweet as one might have been expecting, what with the bridled booze and brash hops waking up to smell the coffee (and malt, and chocolate, and fruit, etc).

A pleasantly rendered in its restrained, over the top manner version of the style - the suspected interlopers kept mostly in check. More drinkable than anything 25-proof and this large has any right to be, but that comes with the caveat of being a fan of big-ass stouts in the first place. Worthy of seeking out for, well, the sudden change of seasons on a holiday Monday is a good enough reason for this (non) camper.
