The beer is pitch black with a thin head that didn't last long and seemed thick. The beer had aromas of chocolate and roasted malts with hints of dark fruits. The beer tastes of mostly chocolate with some spice form cinnamon and peppers. Not too bitter at all. Finish is slightly dry but beer is smooth but full bodied.

Opaque black with no head and minimal lacing. Smells chocolate and roasty with a slight sweetness. Taste is spicy and bitter chocolate, nice roast flavor from the malts, slightly earthy. Slick mouthfeel and moderate fizziness.

A: Poured into a snifter to a black beer topped by a finger of dense light tan head that fades quickly to a collar around the edge of the glass with some lacing
S: Smells of chocolate, vanilla and some spices with a little roasted malt
T: Taste is chocolate and some cinnamon with a little vanilla and some heat and spice from the peppers. There's a littel roast going on but it's like Mexican hot chocolate. Swallow is roasted malts, vanilla, cinnamon and some slight peppery heat.
M: This beer is fairly full in body with a silky mouthfeel. Carbonation is low but adequate and the finish is on the dry side.
O: Overall this is a really nice beer with good flavors and complexity. The adjuncts are a nice twist on the style but Xocoveza from stone is just a little bit better in my opinion. It's still well made and one to try if Xocoveza isn't around.

A nice stout, lots of chocolate and some vanilla but no heat from the peppers at all. I was expecting a bit of heat and it would have been nice to pair with the chocolate sweetness.

12oz bottle from Noble Grains NYC on the UES
Pours a dark amber brown with tan head, smell is bittersweet chocolate, spiced cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, sweet cafe latte, taste is chocolate syrup, mild roastiness, heat, and peppery earthiness, medium to light feel. A sweet syrupy, roasted, spiced chocolate milk, a budget Prairie Bomb! Yum.

A: Pours very dark brown, with a finger of medium-brown head. Lacing is pretty good, too.

S:: Dark fruits, pepper, flowers, coffee, and cocoa. Quite complex aromas.

T: A hefty dose of sweet malt up front -- almost too much, bordering on cloying; and it doesn't quickly fade. But it is joined by a variety of other flavours: espresso, raisins, molasses, burnt toast, and a little chili pepper (although less than I expected based on the bottle description).

M: Smooth, but a little light on carbonation.

O: A good imperial stout, but I'm a little disappointed it didn't have more of a chili presence (I'm not looking to burn my throat, but a little heat would be nice).

Mexican Chocolate Stout Tasting with D.C.
Best tasting yet.
All 6 beers were anywhere from very good to magnificent.
1. Clown Shoes Luchador en Fuego
2. Weyerbacher Sunday Mole' Stout
3. Avery Xolotl
4. Stone Xocoveza
5. Stone Xocoveza Charred
6. Clown Shoes Chocolate Sombrero
--
Aside from previous notes, I notice there is not a ton of chocolate or spices in the taste that tease in the Aroma.
Raisin and Licorice seem to be most prominent.

6th of 6 (but nothing to be ashamed of in this lot).

Pours dark with a porous, whispy head that fades quickly. Aroma is has some sticky chocolate syrup smell mixed with some normal dark malt. A faint hint of vanilla at first but it's gone almost instantly. Flavor is the same. Vanilla adds some smoothness. There is heat but it comes with some booziness so I'm not attributing that to the chillis, it's more of a raw alchohol taste. No detectable cinnamon. Perfectly adequate, perfectly run-of-the-mill.

Bottle copped at Bonds Tavern. Dark black, creamsicle pour. Heavy notes of chocolate and cocoa predominate. Medium-bodied mouthfeel. Slightly unbalanced malt flavor with a sweet, warming finish. Not bad.

Black, with a soft but thin tan head that dies to a medium ring.

Smell is chocolate covered bacon and honey baked ham?! Sassafras?! Maple syrup?! There is a ton smoked malt wafting off the glass but I'm not entirely certain that was intended by the description.

Taste is a little less weird, but still weird. Smokey malt, still a little hammy, with chocolate, while the vanilla and cinnamon finally step forward for the first time. Ancho pepper is detectable in flavor, but creeps a little closer to a plain, roasted green pepper as opposed to a spicy chili pepper. There is even a sort of sharp cheddar in the background...huh?

A little tangy, a little frothy, moderate to light body. I have been drinking a ton of top notch 'Mexican' stouts this summer, so that probably paints my experience here but this is certainly off the rails.

Poursreally dark with a light head that quickly fades to a light ring on the outside of the snifter. Aroma of chocolate, roasted coffee and cinnamon. Taste more roasted coffee, lots of milk chocolate, cinnamon with a vanilla finish. Very cool ride with the flavors. Complex. Another great stout by clown shoes.

Look - Pours a black as night beer with a tan head to it.
Smell - Coffee and that summarizes that point in my view (my mother thinks it smells like soy sauce).
Taste - A deep and lasting chocolate taste and there is a slight hint of pepper in it's final moments in my mouth before I shallow.
Feeling - This alcohol gives me a kick of happiness in my mouth and the carbonation keeps this beverage interesting all the way through.
Overall - I believe this is a very excellent beverage that's worth a taste for us all to enjoy!

Tis another review from notes, this is the last of my beer notes awaiting posting on my b(eer)log, and I brew I have yet to see in Australia since: Clown Shoes Chocolate Sombrero. Shame about not finding it again because it was a real hootenanny of a brew - from the silly Mexican wrestler clown on the label right down to how good it tasted, but thems the breaks over here in Australia with highly sought American craft beers: You may only ever see them once. I’ve only managed to get 3 4-packs of my fav IIPA [which I mention in almost EVERY single review] DirtWolf here and there over the last 3yrs. PS: Get more f$&king DirtWolf Australia!

Poured from a 355ml bottle into a Duvel tulip.

A: Opaque brown almost black body with a decent 2 cm tan head that stands up well throughout the review - I’m impressed with this head. Good head*. 9/10.

S: Dark chocolate, cocoa powder and not much else... chocolate lovers need only apply with this brew. At least it does what it says in the name - can’t say that for most Australian beers that say “Pale Ale” on their labels, so there you go. 7/10.

T: Quite sweet upfront, a tad too sweet for my tastes, with bitter cacao/coffee finish. Dark chocolate and cocoa powder start to finish. It's simple chocolate flavours all the way but it works, although the label does mention ancho chile [Americans can’t spell “chilli” correctly I’ve noticed - it’s a type of pepper not a farking country!], cinnamon and organic vanilla extract - not really getting those flavours - so that’s a small detraction to the score overall. 8/10.

M: Medium bodied with a light carbonation and slightly cloying sweetness as noted above. 7/10.

D: Apart from the almost overbearing sweetness this is a great but simple chocolate stout that fares well without being outstanding. A tasty chocolate treat. Although chilli-lovers (that’s right: “CHILLI” Yanks!) will no doubt be disappointed by the lack of chilli flavour, as will cinnamon and organic vanilla extract lovers† by the lack of those ingredients. 7/10.

Food match: Chocolate lava cake or other chocolate-related goodness.

*That’s what she... ahhh forget it.

†Be there such a thing.

L: Black (and consequently totally opaque), large quantity of very dark beige head. Looks great.

S: Chocolate, vanilla, chili spice, cinnamon

T: Initially, the cinnamon dominates, followed by the vanilla. The end of the sip along with the aftertaste are characterized by very dark cocoa notes. The chili spice is only minimally present. Taste maybe a tiny bit watery.

F: Medium body, but a little watery. Medium amount of carbonation. A tiny bit bitter.

O: this was not bad, but overall I was disappointed.

Everything about this is... Ehhhh. Kinda chocolate.. Kinda cinammon. Kinda spice. Nothing is solid and sorta just disappointed. Clown shoes does make great beer, but this one is a miss for me. Very disappointed as I'm a huge spicy chocolate fan

I had this on draught in a pub. Served in a 10 oz. snifter. It pours a deep, dark mahogany, very nearly black, with a one-finger, beige colored head and extensive lacing that didn't dissipate throughout the pour. It's a really pretty beer. Unfortunately, the smell was rather subdued. There was an aroma of chocolate and some cinnamon but it wasn't as strong as I anticipated. This is a very flavorful stout with roasted malt, sweet cocoa, vanilla, and hints of cinnamon and peppers. It finishes slightly bitter with pepper and bakers chocolate. This stout is medium-bodied, lightly carbonated, and the 9% ABV is noticeable. Overall, this is a very good Imperial Stout, as one would expect from Clown Shoes. Often, I conjecture how a bottled beer would taste on draught. In this case, I'd like to try it from the bottle at a warmer temperature.

Black color with tan head. Aroma has cinnamon, chili, chocolate and cacao. Taste is quite balanced with a nice touch of cinnamon and a slightly bitter chocolate finish. Full body with a smooth feel. A really nice take on a mexican chocolate stout.

Black pour with a tan to light brown head; cap quickly retreated leaving little to no lace. Chocolate nose. Flavors of cocoa nibs, roast malt and chillies peppers; some vanilla in the middle, but very subtle. Medium mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Overall, lite on the chillies but a pleasing chocolate stout nonetheless.

12 oz bottle.
Dark Brown, almost black with an off white head.
Scent is heavy on alcohol and light on chocolate.
Taste has the chocolate in it and not the boozeyness that was in the smell.
Light and a little creamy, especially for the alcohol content.
Nothing special here.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle into a snifter. Bottled 01/15/2016

L- Pretty much black, not really much light coming through, small latte colored head.

S- Dark fruits, dark chocolate, cinnamon, touch of alcohol, light vanilla and chili.

T- Dark cherry, dark chocolate, medium roast, not much alcohol, cinnamon, vanilla and chilies are there but subtle. Finish is of a medium roast coffee, some light hops.

F- A light syrup good lower carbonation for the style.

O- A very nice beer, nice to see it in 12oz bottles so I can grab a single when I'm craving the flavors. I enjoy that it's not too roasty and that the chili is subtle with a nice amount of cinnamon and vanilla in the mix.

Nice high grav stout. Compares to a Prairie Bomb!, although the Prairie is by far the superior beer. Black with a light tan head. The smell is relatively subtle with no notes coming through clearly. The taste is actually pretty mild for a high grav American stout. Nothing to write home about, but definitely a drinkable beer.

While I appreciate a good Mexican chocolate, I feel they missed the mark here. Pours dark with almost no head. Aroma is of roasted malts with hints of alcohol and spice, but no chocolate. Flavor is not too different, having more vanilla and spice combine in a somewhat medicinal way. Not what I was looking for. Finish is fairly clean.
