Brewed by:
Clown Shoes
Massachusetts, United States

Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 11.00%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
Hoppy Feet guy extinguished evil via a sharp stake through an undead chest. Now, Blaecorn Unidragon, mad as hell, has expelled another blood sucker from Earth. No, we do not like Vampires, but we love Vampire Slayer, which was blended with bourbon barrel aged Blaecorn Unidragon to beget Angry Beast.

2012 bottle. Poured out a dark ruddy brown. Sits in the glass black. A lot of that standard Clown Shoes big roasted bitterness coming through. Oaky dryness. Smooth. Not much bourbon barrel presence or smoke. Holding up well for 4 plus years.

On-tap 6/1/2015 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color, with a short brown head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains chocolate, licorice, dark fruit, roasted malts and some coffee.

T: The taste starts out with sweet flavors of chocolate, dark fruit and licorice. Then a hearty roasted malt character comes in. The barrel-aging is essence is prevalent. The hops presence is very mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium-to-heavy body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down dangerously easy, slightly filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a very solid big beer to drink for a while.

Appearance: Pours nearly solid black. Some dark browns and deep reds at the edges when held to light. Head is a small dark khaki that drops to a super thin collar almost immediately. No lacing or cap. Minimal carbonation on the pour.

Smell: Solid roasted malt character with a small hint of smoke and char. Slightly burnt. Bourbon is muted. Some vanilla and caramel. Slightly caramelized malt sweetness. Some cocoa and dark chocolate with some underlying alkaline cocoa. Minimal hop presence. A touch of earthy and herbal hops. Some alcohol heat on the back. Hints of old coffee. Licorice root. Small push of barrel through the back. Some toffee and butterscotch as well. Warming bumps up the smoky and charred elements but they work well with the slightly sweet nose.

Taste: Cocoa and a small splash of bourbon. Barrel has a bit more character than the nose. Hops add some balance on the backside with a mildly earthy element. Some grassy notes as well. Malts run sweet but are balanced by a solid smoke and char. Slightly burnt malts as well. Some caramelized malt sweetness. Alcohol heat creeps through the back. Bourbon is in evidence but it actually enhances rather than distracts. Solid layers of caramel, toffee, and small hints of vanilla. Like the nose, warming ups the game on the smoke and burnt elements but they are balanced by the slightly sweet malt base.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a moderate to low carbonation. Very mildly dry on the finish. Slightly slick sip with a touch of creaminess.

Overall: I'd be mad too.

This might be one of the best showings from Clown Shoes. Granted, this bottle is 2-3 years old at the minimum, but it has a nice balance of barrel and base stout. It all works to compliment and never gets overbearing. Drinks well for the ABV and lacks the general muddled nature I expect from Clown Shoes stouts.
