Usual stout appearance, maybe leans a little more brown than average, but still looks plenty good. Beige and tan frothy head.

Super tiny barrel aroma. Same with the taste, really fast tracked the barrel aging on this one methinks. Mostly chocolate aroma. Chile and barrel, missing. Vanilla comes out as it warms. Solid beer but the price point for barrel beers better be low if its only going to have a trace signature of said barrel.

"Spiced with vanilla, cinnamon, ancho and chipotle peppers, then aged 100% in Bourbon Barrels, this beer wants to leap onto your palate like a luchador who dives into the ring from atop the highest rope." Brewed in the style of an American Imperial Stout aged in bourbon barrels with spices and vanilla added. Available as a limited release in 22 oz. bottles.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a snifter glass.

(Appearance) Pours a frothy foam head of a medium brown color over a deep black body. Retention is good and lacing is light and patchy. 4

(Smell) Nose is of vanilla-accented bourbon and oak forward, with moderate stout characters of medium roasted grain, chocolate syrup and toasted caramel bread, subtle notes of vegetal pepper heat and effervescent spice in the aroma, although subtle overall. Much of what makes this beer unique is fairly underwhelming in the nose, but altogether the collective aroma is pleasing to note, if not ordinary for the style. Potency is moderate. 3.75

(Taste) Medium roasted barley grain with undertones of moist chocolate cake, a sweet complexity of vanilla and bourbon note finish outpaces the more subtle characters of the ancho and chipotle peppers with their reserved heat index as well as the surprisingly delicate, even arguably underdone effervescence of cinnamon and nutmeg. Altogether a flavorful and enjoyable stout, but additionally somewhat limited in the flavor profile it aims to bring to the table, and otherwise an ordinary imperial stout with a notable bourbon barrel flavor. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) Texture is silky, smooth, moderately viscous, lightly syrupy, medium dry. Carbonation is moderate, generating a medium frothiness and a modestly crisp finish. Body is medium for the style, heavy overall. Balance is slightly sweet over roasty, spicy and earthy bitter. Alcohol presence is moderate, and there are no off characters. 3.75

(Overall) I can't find myself docking too many points with this beer, as I find it very enjoyable as an Imperial Stout. I regularly sample new entries in Clown Shoes' impressive stout lineup as they come around, and was mostly interested in Luchador En Fuego for what it would do different with the style. Unfortunately, most of the flavors are too subtle and too underrepresented to really contribute anything notable to the flavor of the stout, and what remains is an enjoyable, but not very diversified-drinking American Imperial Stout. Nothing awful, but nothing to write home about either. I'm not too sure if the Mexican style chocolate stout substyle is diversifying the stout enough to justify a release of this against their year-round Chocolate Sombrero. Aside from the bourbon barrel flavor, which comes through almost too clearly in this ale, this beer doesn't bring too much else to the table for me, but sends me to bed satisfied nonetheless. 3.75

Shocking imperial stout review refers to color and black and brown! Almost 1/3" beige head.

Where is the barrel in the aroma? Lacking. But it did give plenty of chocolate, so that was nice. No head, no chiles, cinnamon. Muted.

Taste still was missing the barrel aspect, but it was still nice, even if the price of the bottle seems high for something without barrel character. Vanilla came out with warming. Toffee, chocolate, caramel. Peppers seemed hardly there too.

No off flavors, just some flavors were massively understated. Corpulent brought this. Poser.

Pours a dark inky black with slight chocolate head. One of the best smelling beers that I can recall, wonderful vanilla, nutmeg and a hint of chile pepper, along with dark roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. Taste is not as wonderful as the nose; quite good but not stellar. Molasses are more present in the taste, while the vanilla, nutmeg and chile pepper are much less present. A solid beer, but Undead Party Crasher and Crasher in the Rye are superior beers in my estimation.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter.

(A)- Pours pitch black in color. Minimal tan froth and lacing.

(S)- Very chocolatey with subtle spices and dry oak

(T)- Again, plenty of chocolate. Subtle spice along with the boozy oak.

(M)- A mellow carbonation level. A good balance to it with spicy chocolate and barrel aging.

(O)- A solid barrel aged stout. Good but not great

Smells of boozy nutmeg and vanilla. Drinks much smoother than the nose. Very little alcohol. Taste of Rick vanilla and chocolate with a touch of heat at the end. Full mouth feel. Very solid beer that has aged well.

This is the best beer I've had in a long time and the best I've had from Clownshoes, by far. Bottled 2/26/14. I love everything about this. Can't wait to share my other bottle.

Bottled 2/25/14. Spice, vanilla, and cinnamon likely faded, although the barrel blended nicely.
